    Just a few observations:
    1. Yes, you need a GMRS license to transmit on this radio Period. The repeaters have nothing to do with that requirement.
    But it is also true that, according to the FCC enforcement page, no one has ever been fined for using a GMRS radio without a license.
    the license only costs $35 for ten years, and covers the whole family. No test is required. So get a license. You’ll feel better about yourself!
    2. It is not ready to communicate with other GMRS radios out of the box. It has tones set on all channels, but they are easily removed via the front menu controls
    3. The range on these radios is up to 8 miles in simplex mode. Using a local repeater I can transmit over 60 miles.l with this radio.
    4. Using these radios while over landing, the range can be greatly increased by using an external mag mount antenna
    5. The Retevis RB27, Baofeng G11s, and the Pofung G11uv are all basically the same radio, but for some reason the G11s is rated at 3 wards, and the other two at 5 watts. Testing has verified those claims. In practical terms there is little practical difference in performance between 3 and 5 watts. Other factors are far more important than wattage.
    6. These are excellent radios. Most essential tasks can be taken care of using the menu function. Using computer programming software makes programming quick and easy. But a usb/k connector cable is required. Software and a cable for this radio are available at the Radioddity web site.
    I want to stress that this radio is NOT ready right out of the box if you want to communicate with other GMRS radios. They can talk with each other, no problem. But if you try talking to another type of FMRS radio, they will hear you, but you will not hear them. That is due to the tones being turned on for each channel. Those tones must be turned off for general usage. That isn’t hard to do, but it does mean learning about how to use the radio’s menu function.

    How many watts of transmit power do these radios have? Are they preset with ctcss tones? Are the radios in narrow band or White band? Can these settings I asked about the adjusted on the radio or do they have to be hooked to a computer with a programming cable to program?

      Great questions. These radios are 5w power, yes they are preset with ctcss tones, they can be chabged/adjusted on the radio itself, no need to connect to a computer, and as for band 5 preset channels are low watt narrow band, the rest are high watt wide band. They GMRS frequencies only however, cannot tune above or below.... I just released a new video last with with an update on these radios, if you have not already seen it.... 🙃

    I am new and done much research but some questions I can't find answers to. I am interested in this Baofeng G11S but am unsure it does all I want. I want a gmrs communicator and police scanner to stay in touch with my neighborhood safety. The frequency I found these work on is "Scanning Receiver Frequency band: 136.0-174.0 & 400.0-512.0MHz" but my local police show they start with 851.xxx for instance. Can you elaborate on if this scanner will receive those and how to get those on this scanner if so? Thanks for your time and thanks for the video.

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  2 года назад +1

      So this particular radio is just the GMRS range, more of a two way radio. Midland makes a nice handheld that will get you to the upper end of that 800mhz range, but from what I understand, the privacy tones for police are encrypted and unique.... if you are looking specifically for a scanner, there are other products. If you just wanted to range the lower frequencies like the 130s.... the Beofang UV-5 is your better choice

  • @macdirk4
    @macdirk4 2 года назад +2

    You really should update this video or do a follow-up... as many others have mentioned you Definitely DO need a license to operate these radios. You may not be likely to get caught or fined by the FCC, but there is still etiquette and protocol to follow. It is worth mentioning that FRS and gmrs use the same channels so you could communicate with someone else with FRS radios and they would not need a license to use the FRS radios. Also worth mentioning if you get your license, it covers family members so so these could still be used by family on a camping hunting or other outdoor adventure if it's between family members and only one family member has the license. but as a licensed gmrs user you should know that you need to transmit your call sign at 15 minute intervals and at the end of your conversation.

    I bought this radio and got it out and messed with it and most is straight forward. I can't figure out how to search by frequency and not just channels 1-25. The baofeng website has no help for g11s, the manual doesn't help, and from what I can see, no youtube videos have shown it either. They claim a cable on the page can program with baofeng software but that is not true because the model isnt listed and no software lists this model either. Can anyone tell me how to put in a frequency by frequency # and not just 1-25?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  2 года назад +1

      So I had the same issue. Have played with them extensively and have not been able to get it to display the frequency. However, closest I can suggest, is the last page of the owners manual has them all listed and broken down to which channel does which frequency. We took a snap shot of it on the cell phone and keep it with us when changing channels. To get more indepth usage I would suggest the UV-5 as it has the full screen.... these radios are great for beginners but past that... I have found they lack a few features....

    One big thing to note is they'll only talk to each other out of the box.
    You need to remove the ctcss tones on each channel to talk to other gmrs radios otherwise you'll be frustrated when meeting up with other groups.
    Otherwise yes, I have these G11S and they're great so far and easy to hand to family without confusing them.
    My license covers the whole family.

    Thank you for the informative video.
    I've just purchased a similar set - Pofung F19 - and it was shipped with privacy codes (CT or DCS) enabled on all 22 GMRS channels.
    Is there a way to disable them without the programing SW?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  2 года назад +2

      In the settings for the radio, yes, you can either change the privacy tones, or turn them off.... the manual that comes with them is very vague, so it takes a few minutes to figure it out.... when you find the setting, and you use either up or down to change the setting, just keep going in one direction until it shows off... there is dozens of codes, so it may seem endless, but its there....

    Quite a commercial for the radios. Looks decent. Wish they were 5W and a had a bigger battery. You really shoulda noted that these come with codes enabled on every channel so, while they'll talk to each other, you won't hear other brands of radios until those are disabled. Can these be programmed with a PC as well, with Chirp or some proprietary software from Baofeng?

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  2 года назад

      Disabling the privacy tones are relatively easy, and using them in conjunction with other radios like the UV5 or other brands like the midlands, Yeasus, etc, I've had no issues. Yes, you have several channels open to program yourself via a PC. They are advertised as 5w, though they don't seem to put that much power out. As for battery life, we have used them hard for entire weekends and not needed charging.... so they are not bad. It's a good "beginner" radio for those not sure of using FRS/GMRS as opposed to CB. And so far, has worked great for us. 😉

  • @drpochoa

    These are cool radios, but a programming cable, software from the Radioddity G11S site, and a Windows computer makes it way easier to turn tones off or modify if comms with other radios are needed. Also, all channels are preset to Narrow. But changes can be made without a computer, just a bit slower.

      There are a handful of programmable channels to what you want, but the set ones are simply set. It's a beginner GMRS radio, so for those that want the deeper features, would look at the UV5 or similar. As for the frequency range, it responds to the GMRS range only....

    These radios have removable antennas, which means there GMRS only, as FRS does not allow any removable antennas, even on channels 8-14.
    These also chan access GMRS repeaters, which automatically means you need a licence no natter the channels used.
    Lastly, any radio over 2watts is a GMRS radio.
    They definitely look like nice units.
