I've never known what subject I wanted to write about, and of course that has been an impediment to my ability to compose. I have moderate technical proficiency, but that doesn't go far unless it's used to express something heartfelt and meaningful. However, I'm of no illusion that I'll ever achieve any recognition for my music, so it's a good thing that I'm content to embark on such a project with the aim of trying to impress an audience of one. My harshest critic. Myself.
It STILL grows on me. One of the very best songs Steven Wilson ever made and maybe not only my "Song of 2020", but of 2021, too. Absolutely marvellous!
@@Icasus On several occasions he has said that he has discarded songs for being "too poppy" (as in the case of Happiness III that dates back to the time of Deadwing). Even in the TTB Deluxe Edition he mentions that Permanating was scrapped for a time and he was scared to release it. Personally I feel that To The Bone is impregnated by that fear, however, listening to this single I feel that that fear disappeared.
Wow! Steven gets on The Autobahn, meets the Pet Shop Boyz and Yazz, and bumps into a Porcupine at the service station. What am I on! What is he on! Love it....replay...
If y'all like this record, get into Everything Everything! The guy who produced their first two records helped Steven produce this, and EE's drummer is all over it!
Imagine when he play this song live... he will blow our brains out. I like it, and i'm not surprised; Steven is not just a musician, he is a composer (and a very good one) who likes to experiment.
Xam271 Let me guess, everything that Steven Wilson does is "holier than thou", am I right? I doubt you are a techno or electronic fan, but a Steven Wilson fan, that's why everything he does is "pure genius", no matter what, right?
@@GuitarWholesale Nah, gotta disappoint you there. Like that of any truly great artist, Wilson's catalogue is comprised of hits and misses. That being said, Nick Beggs has been working with Wilson since 2011. He's a great and open minded bass player. The fact that you can't imagine a bass player being versatile and professional enough to play additional bass over an electronic bassline just showcases your own ineptitude to understand musicianship.
I listen to Steven for a very long time. He locks the circle. Compare with first PT-album "On a sunday of life". Since this long phase he never dissapointed me. It is THE experience to join his music. Nobody else is a genius like him.Thank you for the music.....

ORGANIC LED TELEVISION This is a great song! Very different from the rest of his catalog once again, I can't wait for the rest of the album. Even though this style is vastly different from, say, Grace for Drowning etc. there are very distinct Steven Wilson chord progressions and textures sprinkled throughout.
And it makes me looking forward for it. Both is legit. He was controversial since at least STUPID DREAM. That's an important part of his (attention: personal opinion) god-likeness.
I hear a dark Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, human League, Massive Attack vibe here ... I like !!!! I love the teasers building up to the release and the complete experience he creates for each album and tour ... no other musician/ artist thrills me the way he does... I will always love PT but seriously his solo music does it for me just as much.. always keeping us on our toes and building up the anticipation .. keep doing what you are doing Steven 😎
So did Jethro Tull. No two albums of theirs were the same. They showed tons of musical creativity and diversity as well as a constant state of evolution between albums. Believe it or not The Beatles and ABBA also progressed with time.
"I think the responsibility of every true artist is ultimately to be selfish, to make something that they themselves believe 100 percent in and to never think about what other people want from them. No one is going to tell me that Picasso painted paintings to please other people, I don’t believe it! I think great artists make things in a very selfish way, and lesser artists think about their fans and try and provide something to please them. For me, those people are not really artists, they’re entertainers." - Steven Wilson, 2016 Listen #3 and this song is gold.
Exactly. And not only that....if artists cater to the audience then they lose the ability to bring something NEW and original out. Because you can only know what the many like by looking at the past.
This thing is still a banger (in Germany we call it "Brett"), one of the very few disco-songs I really dig and overall (for me) an alltime-favourite in Wilson's 'Oeuvre'. Edit: And we still didn't experience it LIVE!!

Steven Wilson is the ultimate musicial chameleon who is not only constantly reinventing himself but is able to not just adapt to a genre but thrive in it but always staying true to his original form without ever allowing himself to be kept in just one box. He truly is a genius and refuses to rest on his laurels, he may very well be one of the most important musicians of the 21st century.
70ies Disco beat, synths like J.M. Jarre, choirs like Chique, great lyrics and message, and a shimmer of prog. Almost no guitars. Great fusion. Some folks might dislike it. I definitely like it. Looking forward to the live shows
The music makes you feel a certain way. That is why I love this man. This makes me feel stressed out. But its upbeat and fast. It's like fake happy. But at the same time it's dark. Like you cant stop the beat/shopping. Compulsive. Like something is wrong. Love music that makes me THINK. He has done it once again folks!!
Well it's all relative. I bet Steven Wilson buys a whole lot more stuff than any of us, that many minimalists and anti-consumerists would deem to be over-the-top consumerism. But for him he would say these items are essential - like his extensive record and CD collection. It's easy to judge the buying decisions of other people while we defend our own though.

Excellent 21 century's piece of music..true artists create music first of all in order to satisfy their own need, not to satisfy their audience..Mr Wilson is one of them..
He's telling the truth and that's why he's relevant. It concerns me. What he's doing surprised me consistently. Most of the music he's composing affects me - more or less. STRACHAU but isn’t he the guy who sells Deluxe expanded box sets and 180 gram vinyl reissues? A bit hypocritical . Not a good idea to throw rocks at a glass house. The song is pretty good though.

This song arrives just in time. The virus stopped the earth and in the silence, we can hear clearer. We buy and long to have so much stuff that is totally unnecessary. We pay attention to so many things that aren't worth it. We argue about topics that in the end, doesn't make a real difference in our lives. Idk it just made me think
Electronics + Female vocals + some of his vocals + falsetto = Steven Wilson's version of being a musical genius, innovator, always changing, à la David Bowie...
Holy shit - what a track! Discovered this JUST in time for Christmas consumer season. I simply love this guy! Fantastic refrain on this song. Now to find the 180g vinyl of it...
These dance/electronica elements have always been present in Steven music... the early Porcupine Tree albums had LOTS of these kind of beats - how they sounded in the early nineties of course - so I can't understand why people is surprised. Maybe cause they think that In Absentia is the first PT album...
Everybody stop complaining, please give Steven a chance, listen and enjoy hhis music, he has long prooved he masters each and every genre he wants to. I only know two genres, good music and bad music.

I've only just very recently gotten into Steven Wilson so everything is fresh to me, including Porcupine Tree. This is the track I keep coming back to!
This guy never disappoints! A true musical genius, seen him many times live and always gives a perfect show! I do miss porcupine tree but as long as sw keeps making art/music I'm happy!
People says this is different from his style, but to me this song reminds me of the album Up The Downstair from Porcupine Tree... that psychedelic atmosphere from songs like Synesthesia or the title song. Not bad, not bad at all.
Mellora Exactly. He constantly explores different styles and makes the music he wants to make. Whether me or you like what’s he doing compared to past work is besides the point for him.
I really can't understand all the controversy around this song. Personally, I think it's absolutely brilliant. In fact, I'm totally addicted to it. I admire the fact that Steven continues to bring us genre-defying masterpieces and really respect that he does what HE wants and not necessarily what many of his fans want. As an EDM producer, that's exactly what I do, I make the music I want to hear and if people like it, that's cool, and if they don't, that's also cool. A lot of "fans" seem to think that if it's not progressive it must be pop. Sorry to burst your bubble y'all but this song is extremely progressive and it's definitely NOT pop. 80's synthwave? Yes. Pop? Not so much. IMHO, everything Steven touches turns to gold. He makes the music I want to hear, every single album without exception!
Steven, I discovered you when I found "Routine". Your musical genius is unmatched. I myself have been a musician for 40+ years, I have yet to find anyone who captures my deepest emotions like you do. Well done, you are truly gifted. I adore your music.
Super catchy, another great song in the Steven Wilson catalogue. I don't get people who hate on Steven's poppier side, he's always had pop influences in his music. For those that hate on this because its not "progressive" I would argue that it's more progressive in a musical sense than most things in the prog rock/metal sphere nowadays. I find it ironic that those who claim to be more musically developed by listening to prog are so narrow minded when they are challenged to listen to anything else. Keep rocking people.. or dancing .. or whatever you feel like free expression is the whole point of music.
This has nothing to do with "challenge" to listen to different music. When it's not my taste, I avoid it. Simple as that. And sorry, but SW's recent direction is really turning me off. We have enough pop "music". So we don't need potentially great musicians to add to that pointless ocean of letting computers create sounds. HCE was a masterpiece. I think, it could just go downhill from there.
@@7thString84 Well you are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. I don't see it as letting computers make sounds personally. It takes a personality behind that software and machinery to allow it to come to life. While yes there are fewer acoustic instruments on this track as compared to most of his previous works the man has always had a heavy love for electronica. Who knows maybe this album will have a number of great instrumental tracks. For me personally, the difference is giving these artificial sounds a character of their own which I think Steven has done on this song. It's what people have like Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, and countless others have done in the past. Who knows maybe you'll grow to love this album, my guess is Steven is just growing tired of using guitar tones heavily on every album, I mean the guy has been doing it for like 25-30 years now, and wishes to test his skills in another area that he loves.
@@smccann1998 You definitely understand Steven Wilson and art itself. What's the problem with pop? There's bad pop, good pop and Steven Wilson. People should enjoy music for what it is not having stereotypes. Music is like life and life evolves. So what's the problem with this stuck people. There are plenty of bands out there with the same formula over and over. So go listen to them if you're narrow minded. I understand it's a matter of tastes and Mr. Wilson has a widely taste in everything and it influences HIS music. Yeah, because he's doing what he likes and enjoys not what people want to and he has said that in many interviews. I guess this people just stay in the shallow part of music. Because Wilson has always been this way through all his projects. How can't people notice it?

The stuff I get is as good as it gets, but it certainly isn't a substitute for genuine happiness, or the abstinence of debilitating pain, and the inability to use my arm with precision to play music the way I used to.
Enough of my petty woes. Thanks, Steve. For your work that provides me with a deep connection to your music, and provides a window into your beautiful heart and mind, and also in this image, your angelic facial features. I don't mean to be creepy. I promise I haven't fapped to your image. For one, it hurts too much and it's far too much work, and more accurately, you're too beautiful for me to objectify you like that. Everybody is, really, though you don't turn me on as much as your inspire a sense of pure awe. It's not a sexual desire that you invoke, but a beauty that is classy and beyond admirable.
Well sorry for over sharing. I'm sure nobody wanted to read that. However, I enjoyed expressing it. I may even try to use my thoughts and feelings to inspire a song.
The amount of times wilson has taken a genre i thought i didn't like and made me like it...
That's probably because nobody had done that genre well enough before!!!

Steven Wilson without fear of being pop is amazing.
Starting Way back in "Stupid Dream", I really love his pop tunes
SW likes pop, so why would he be afraid of being it? He would enjoy a little more recognition.

@@GuitarWholesale Nah, gotta disappoint you there. Like that of any truly great artist, Wilson's catalogue is comprised of hits and misses. That being said, Nick Beggs has been working with Wilson since 2011. He's a great and open minded bass player. Out of all the "prog artists" Steven Wilson is the only TRUE prog. Because the man's music is actually progressing with time.
You have to listen Leprous in order to notice their evolution through every album they've made
So did Jethro Tull. No two albums of theirs were the same. They showed tons of musical creativity and diversity as well as a constant state of evolution between albums. Believe it or not The Beatles and ABBA also progressed with time.

This song might be in reference to “Normal” “Sentimental”

"I think the responsibility of every true artist is ultimately to be selfish, to make something that they themselves believe 100 percent in and to never think about what other people want from them. No one is going to tell me that Picasso painted paintings to please other people, I don’t believe it! I think great artists make things in a very selfish way, and lesser artists think about their fans and try and provide something to please them. For me, those people are not really artists, they’re entertainers." - Steven Wilson, 2016

I love that despite this, you always know instantly it's a Steven Wilson song, no matter what style it's in.

Allan Pv Synesthesia is such an awesome and underrated song

You found the word with 'cosmic'. That's perfect!
Keep rocking people.. or dancing
.. or whatever you feel like free expression is the whole point of music.
You nailed it. I absolutely agree. 👌🏼
Could not agree more
This has nothing to do with "challenge" to listen to different music.
There are plenty of bands out there with the same formula over and over. So go listen to them if you're narrow minded. I understand it's a matter of tastes and Mr. Wilson has a widely taste in everything and it influences HIS music.
