I have been riding the Magic Mary as a front tyre lately, and boys must I say that cornering is so much full of confidence with it...
I started with Schwalbe Magic Mary and Hans Dampf. But now I feel the Magic Mary and Nobby Nic combo is the right choice for me. And nice presentation.
I’m an XC guy and Schwalbe is my brand of choice. Racing Ralph in the rear and Rocket Ron in the front. Works great in most conditions. Low rolling resistance and good traction when cornering.

I just bought the rapid rob and though tom combo. What a step up from my stock bontragger xr2's. Instantly I could ride more sketchy portions of my trails where I previously had to walk my bike. Only a 3-4% reduction in rolling resistance on the tar and chip back roads, barely noticeable. Couldn't be happier.

You always have great topics and cover them thoroughly. I run the Magic Mary's. When my other friends are catching flats and are washing out through turns I on the other hand am having no problems. I just got a new 29 Hardtail that I use mostly around town/suburbs on mixed surfaces (road, cycle paths, fire trails, grass and some dirt) It came fitted with Smart Sam's so far I like them.
WTB Vigilante Front, Breakout/Trail Boss Rear for me. NorCal. I enjoy all WWC videos. I think you guys are doing great things as a bike shop for the MTB community. Thank you.

Trail oriented Hardtail.
I'm running a Nobby Nic 2.25 (blue addix) on the rear and a Hans Dampf 2.35 (orange addix) in the front. Works really good.
Have you tried Nobby Nic 2.25 Addix (non blue)? I've found some on my local bike shop and are noticeable cheaper than the blue line ones
@@mihaichiriac480 Yeah the rubber is lower quality on the Schwalbe Performance Line, but stil good Tires.
I have sets of, NN, MM, and HD's across all three wheel sizes. When I can I run an HD up front with 1 width smaller NN in the rear. (in 27.5 + though it is a 2.8NN and 2.6NN because the 2.8 HD just came out a month ago and I haven't bought one yet to put on the front)
For where I ride it is an awesome setup just enough slip in the rear to slide the rear end around tight stuff. Lots of sand and wet clay in my area so I prefer my tires to have a more open knobs and float to them. YMMV
Always used nobby nics but after moving to Phoenix they were washing out on me a lot on the desert terrain.so I just got the new Hans Dampf can’t wait to try them!

I run a magic Mary front and a maxxis aggressor rear had them for my trip to morzine this summer and the were unreal
I run Racing Ralph & as long as you get the performance version for tubeless I have no complaints for the basic single track & XC I do, they work very well.
Im running the new racing ralph and racing ray. They are the best tires I've used so far. (For XC)
I’ve really enjoyed the Nobby Nic tires that came stock on my Intense Primer. They work very well in AZ and have been more then durable.
Schwalbe Tough Tom 2020 has the old Nobby Nic profile. So if you ever want to buy them again you can buy the Tough Toms.
I run a schwalbe magic Mary up front and a maxxis high roller 2 on the rear and it is a dream.

I've ridden Schwalbe, Maxxis and Bontrager and to date I liked them all.
HD should be next to MM, not the NN next to MM ;-)

Agreed and Magic Mary is a mud tyre not a Minion replacement. Also completely disagree with comments linking hardtails and what he called cross country tyres. A sorted hardtail has more to gain from decent tyre traction than a full susser.

I just got myself a magic Mary and a rock razor, haven’t ridden them much yet but im already impressed, I’d get to somewhere a bit damp and get cautious but the Mary just seems to find loads of grip where my old mavic crossroc pulses couldn’t.
Great video. I have the Magic Mary in the front and Hans Dampf in rear on my enduro bike. On my DH bike I have the Muddy Mary front and Hans Dampf on the rear. I used to ride the Snake Skin casing but once I tried the Super Gravity casing it was a game changer. They are a bit heavier but they are bomb proof. For those that don't know a 2.35 Magic Mary is wider than a 2.5 Maxxis Minion.

The muddy Mary is the old version of the magic Mary and do not longer exist. There is a decent schwalbe mud spike tire I forgot the name of. Cheers
Marius Hilkert Magic Mary and Muddy Mary are very similar but different. I have both, the tread pattern is slightly different but the biggest difference is Muddy Mary is 2.5 (which blows up to 2.7) and magic Mary is 2.35. unfortunately Muddy Mary were discontinued but I bought a bunch on clearance.

I've got a rock razor on a used 2016 banshee rune that I bought second hand but I find that it slips way too much in mud, so it isn't my favourite tire although I know it is supposed to be a summer tire

Hans dampf rear plus magic mary upfront may be the best enduro setup for me 👌🏻 but they also have a maxxis counterpart so hey it’s all about the brand preference 😁
What would be the Maxxis counterpart in your oppinion? :)
In between Magic's and Nick's there is Wicked Will - the Freeride guru from Schwalbe . Super fast rolling for a 1 kilo weight , nobby enough , strong and robust... the king of the dry summers!
Used to run Maxxis Hookworms, but needed more all terrain traction. Now I run a Maxxis Minion DHF in the front, and a Kenda K-Rad in the rear. Kenda K-Rads are pretty much an ideal all around tire in my opinion, good on asphalt, and okay on rough terrain. As a mountain biker, for me it's kind of under emphasized how much time I do spend riding on asphalt, so I don't want to be clunking down the road on inch long nubs.
I am using racing ralph and its incredible fast for xc. Very satisfied 👍🏻
I’m on the Jumbo Jims 4.8in fatbike. They sound like an angry beehive on the road but are magic on dirt
I just put a racing Ralph on to he back of my hard tail. Excited to see what happens.
I'm using the Hans Dampf Trail Star on the front and Hans pace star on da rear. South Texas rocky dry and sandy trails, and tires are terrific on these type of trails!
bought a eddy current for my hardtail enduro and can't wait to try it
My fave combos are definitely Mary and hans or mary and razor. I'd only ever run the razor when it's dry and I'm not on a shuttle/lift though. To be honest I've never tried the nic because it doesn't come in super gravity, i might give it a go for my next rear tyre now that i have a cushcore. Also i don't think there's anything wrong with Maxxis but i like rooting for the underdog.
I run high rollers front and back but got a magic mary in the sale to try out when winter comes
I try to be brand agnostic, but I'm definitely a Schwalbe fanboy. I love that they run true to size or a skosh wide, (A nice departure from Maxxis' vanity sizing.)The Trailstar compound Hans redefined my notion of traction on the front. As a fat kid, I definitely don't like running Burts or Ralphs up front, (I dig the Ralph on the rear wheel, and the Burt is nice on a gravel bike.) Even the Nic washes out on the front for me, (But the Nic is a stellar rear.) Since I have enjoyed the Hans so much, I'm going to try the Mary on my new bike.
I'm using the MM on front for my trail riding, have not let me down yet =)
As a fellow fat kid I can tell you that magic Marys are sooooo good
Schwalbe is indeed true to size. But I've never found the actual weight of a Schwalbe tire to be anywhere close to the claimed weight. Just like Maxxis and their vanity sizing, lying (I'll say it) about the average weight makes comparing tires across brands impossible.

I'm currently running noby 2.35 on the front and dampf 2.25 on the rear. I also have a 2.35 dampf.
I agree that the noby washes out on the front, what do you guys think to a 2.35 dampf front and noby 2.35 rear for my adventures?
I also have a 2.35 magic hanging up in the garage too, but I find that it holds the bike back a bit.
I'm running a giant anthem advanced 1, so not a big travel bike, (120mm front).
IME the new (2019) Hans Dampf soft is a better front tire than the same sized Nobby Nic. It grips better, and it works in a wider range of pressures than the NN did. My NN front was happy only between 21psi and 23 psi. The HD works all the way up to around 27 psi. The NN makes a nice rear tire, but so do lots of others.
I like Continental. Currently using Trail Kings. One thing I would like the online retailers to do is put the Country of Origin in their descriptions. WC does a great job with the "Item Specifications" grid which is a perfect spot for COO. There is a difference between the German made Continental's versus the Chinese made. I'm willing to pay the premium for the better, German made tire. Thanks guys and another great video.

Old video but hey, here goes. I thought my spotify turned on by itself when I heard sum 41 playing lol. And yes, we remember the band, even in 2023. Even thought their time in pop spotlight was short, fans never left them. Their last album is coming out soon and they've announced they quit. But what a ride it's been.

The old NN is lighter than the new NN but the new version (blue strip) definitely has more traction. I rode the NN (blue)for the High Cascade 100 and they performed perfectly. For races where I wanted more speed, I tried the Racing Ralph (red) for rear and the older NN in front. This year, I am going to try combinations with the Rocket Ron (red and blue) and maybe the RR in rear. Trying many combos as I feel I can majorly change the characteristics of my bike just by changing tires (from xc to all mountain type races). Have fun everyone.

My new full sus came with NN with blue line and tan walls. 2.4 and it feels amazing cornering.
I bought 2.25 NN not foldable addix, without the blue line for my hardtail. Is there a big difference between the two compounds in terms of traction?
@@mihaichiriac480 I haven't used a non foldable but I would think if it doesn't have the blue line, it isn't Addix. The older compound did where a bit faster and has less grip. Maybe use it in the back and something else in the front.

I tore the side knobs off the magic mary 29er Addix soft. It came stock on my bike on the rear, I've heard that this is quite common, I've recently purchased the Hans Dampf and going to set it up as a rear tire after watching this video and doing more research. I'll see how I go.
No one sells bikes with a Magic Mary as a rear. It's meant to be a front tire.

Hans Dampf fr/rr combo-trailstar/pacestar. I have had great luck on 3 sets, but do plan on trying the DHF/Aggressor combo in the future. Great vids; keep em' coming!!!

I would have thought that the Nobby Nic would be less DH oriented than the Hans Dampf?
I notice that the new Magic Mary tires jump from 2.35 to 2.6 for 27.5 applications. My older set of Schwalbes were typically 2.4. Would it be correct that the current Schwalbe 2.35 measurement is still thinner than their previous 2.4? I was planning to run a 2.4 Nobby Nic for the rear, and wanted to run a Magic Mary up front, but think 2.6 would be overkill, and also heavier than I would prefer (1086g? for the 2.6 magic Mary?). Would a 2.35 Magic Mary up front be a odd fitment with a 2.4 NN in the rear?

My son started riding enduro last year over here in Scotland and, after some head scratching (I'm no expert!), I fitted a Magic Mary on the front and a Hans Damph on the rear of his bike. We saw many others with the same combo and it worked well for him. The Magic Mary has outlasted the Hans Damph, though, but that could be down to his riding style. He recently rode someone else's bike and has been raving about Maxis Minions ever since...
This is a magical combo. I have a few bikes and my favorite one has this setup. The tires definitely make the bike.

I'm inclined to agree with King Rat below. I was surprised to see the HD as more XC oriented than the NoNi. I've used Schwalbe for about 5 years now, in Utah. The new Addix (for the Nobby Nic and Rocket Rons, at least) is a considerable improvement in all areas - rolling resistance, grip and durability have all improved over the non-Addix varieties.

On my 180mm travel Dartmoor Hornet I run the Smart Sam 2,6" in the rear and front.
I have a magic mary up front and a maxxis ardent in the rear.
Running NN 2.35 front and 2.25 rear on my 100mm hardtail in normally wet Lancashire. Quite a bit of difference between the 2.35 and 2.25 especially in the outer tread which is a lot more squeezy & grippy. Looking at doing some xc endurance events 2022 and will try the Racing Ralph 2.25 on the rear. May Try the Hans 2.25 rear in Summer for trails.
I'm running "Tough Tom" on my 27.5 Giant Talon. They seem pretty solid. I was wondering where they fall in this lineup? I might want to step up to a little grippier, for the winter months. Thanks for the comparison video!

LOVVVE Magic mary, enduros, LOTS AND LOTS of grip/traction
I've used both Maxxis and Schwalbe, and still do mix and match. I've found the advantage Maxxis tyres is the wear life. Very durable tyres that roll over almost anything and last forever. Schwable are more supple and wear faster, but much more grippy and softer ride feeling. So I guess it depends on what's more important to you; wear life of ultimate grip.

I like the Schwalbee. I’ve been running Race Ralph’s 29x2.35 and Hans Damf. 2.35 front. When it gets looser Nobby Nics rear and front but the 29x2.6. for the dust bowl. I do think some of the lighter casings are very prone to tear so I’ve started to tape the inside with Fiber Fix tape. Mostly because my brand new Nobby Nic and Race Ralph’s flatted 3x in 2 weeks on sharp rocks. I just bought a Thunder Burt for a combo road to trail fast roller, taped it but haven’t tried it yet.
Not sure the durability will be better with the Burt. But my girl runs Burts both front and rear. They are a very fast tire.
The Akh yes I’ve used them a few times now. They are very fast and easy to climb with. Definitely not a tire for twisting descents on loose rock or loose dirt over hard pack, that’s steep. Excellent tire for some local well maintained trails.
I started with Boetranger tires standard on my Trek e-bike and they were too flimsy - kept puncturing!
I’m now running Schwalbe Nobby Nic 27,5 x 2,25 on the rear and they’re sturdy! I now bought the same for the front wheel.
I also have a couple of Schwalbe Super Moto-X 27,5 x 2,4 for long distance travel over bike paths (low resistance to advancement tire) which are very biffy too.
I also tried Schwalbe Smart Sam on a rental Cube e-bike and they were good tires for a combination of road (the centre knobs were closely spaced - no vibration) and off-road (the side knobs were larger and gripped well on dirt).
Currently running a Magic Mary Super Gravity front, Hans Dampf Addix Soft rear. The MM is a year old and as about 5 plugs in it but running strong.
Hans Dampf was just recently mounted but it seems its still a three ride tire. Three rides and the side knobs start peeling like pencil erasers.
Im swiching tires from time to time and ATM i run 2,8 nobby nic on my hardtail and magic marry 2,35 fitted to 40mm rim on my enduro bike
In Holland we use the tires in combinatie with each other for xc racing Ralf and a rocket Ron more trail rocket Ron nobby Nic enduro nobby Nic hansdampf for DH Hans dampt maic marry. The performance Adix Line are Just good value for monney tires. Use Them for 10 years.

I run the Racing Ralph rear Hans Dampf front, but shaved all the HD center knobs into ramps and rolls much better.
Been a devout Maxxis Minion guy but just bought a bike with a Magic Mary up front with the Hans Kamph in back. So far REALLY liking it. Pretty grippy in SouthEast single track dirt, leaves and pine needles. 😁

Other Schwalbe models that I know:
Tough Tom, Rapid Rob, Jimmy Watts, Eddy Current, Big Betty, Racing Ray, Wicked Will, Rock Razor, Dirty Dan, Al Mighty, Jumbo Jim, Hurricane, Smart Sam(most popular).
Best combination is probably Magic Mary front, Big Betty rear.
The rock razor is a great tire been using for the past 3 years Fast good grip on the edge if it rains and cab take punishment.
I have the Nobby Nics for summer and Ice Spiker Pro Evo for winter
What kind of a tires can i use to road on city and light MTB? O have The schwalbe nobby nic 26, but i think This one at city don't feel smooth
What are some disadvantages (besides speed) of the Magic Mary for trail riding? I just purchased a 2021 Vitus Mythique VR 29er, and it comes with Magic Mary up front, Hans Dampf in the rear. Didn't realize this was more of a downhill tire.
I run nobby nics on My bike and they are great, they have tons of traction in the wet(in the dry they are good too)
Only run Maxxis. Can almost always find a replacement if need be. Great quality for the price. Good review too. Almost made me change brands. LOL

Just got the new edition of the nobby nic. Seems like a better tread pattern for sideways traction not that i put too much stress on it as only riding casual trails.

In Germany Maxxis is very rare. At least where I come from, we dont have mountains. Most common are Schwalbe and Continental. But Schwalbe is by far the most common tire and tube. When you buy a bike that had branded tires mounted, they will almost certainly be Schwalbe. For most other bike parts and tools we have Fischer.
By far the most common Schwalbe MTB tire in Ger: The Smart Sam. I have been riding them since a was a child. Almost continuous line of center nobs for low rolling resistance and then nobs becoming higher and thicker to the side. Perfect for people who want to ride on and offroad.
Currently I have Rocket Ron on front and rear for XC full suspension. These tires are light and roll really fast. Downside is the can puncture easy and not as grippy as I would prefer on loose. This bike is also a 29er so light weight and decent traction is preferred. I tried Nick on front and rear and really like traction in loose and sand, but the rolling resistance seemed too slow for a 29er. Nicks were decent on downhill runs with good cornering traction. I think the ideal light weight combo is Ralph on the rear and Ron on the front. This combo give you good traction on the rear with more center tread protection and grip while also have a pretty light weight front. Nick on the front with Ralph on rear is works well for better cornering, but loss in rolling resistance is noticeable. Hans Dumpf have pretty nice traction but also have the weight. May try the maxxis Ardent Race on the front at some point.. Looks like it would be a good front tire.
My Nic MTB tires are brand new on my new E-bike, so I will have to report back regarding performance. I may need something in a 27.5 plus in more of a X-country with less rolling resistance in a 2.8 width. Any suggestions? Thank in advance. Great pres BTW!
I've haven't yet used Schwalbe tires, but I've used Specialized, Maxxis, and WTB tires. I've had good experiences with all of them, though Maxxis have been, to me, the easiest to mount and the ones I've gotten the least amount of puncture problems with.
I'd like to see chain comparisons, Jeff. To me, a chain that's a few grams lighter is no motivation, but one that will resist wear and give me a longer service time will be very interesting. What's your experience with the durability and tier of chains? Do higher-end chains work longer? Where's our point of diminishing returns?
I've been super interested in the KMC 11 speed black and blue chain with DLC, but that price point is crazy at about $120! I'd get 4 Sram PC X1 chains (the one I most use), and I doubt that this one will last close to (or more than) 4 times what the PC X1 does. I also like the Sram PC X1 chain and the KMC 11.93 chain because of the alternating silver and black plates, so aesthetics do come into play a bit. I dislike the look of gray chains.

Concerning the Racing Ralph:
Schwalbe itselfs suggests putting the Racing Ralph to the back of the bike, while putting the Racing Ray to the front, since the Racing Ray offers more grip, while the Racing Ralph is the one with the smaller rolling resistance.
I love the Magic Mary for NZ riding where we tend to get rain often enough to keep our tracks slightly soft for a fair amount of the year. I think in Chermany is pronounced Schwal-ba
What about the Black Jack tyres? They're 26" but they feel great with lots of grip! Would like to know what are your thoughts on those tyres

Hi, GREAT VIDEO! I'm just replacing my tyres and was 'advised' to run Hans Dampf 2.35 front and Nobby Nic 2.25 rear, which is what I've bought. However, now I'm finding that most people run the Hans Dampf on the rear (note to self: research first, buy second!). I know that most tend to run a slightly wider tyre on the front. I also know there's no "hard'n'fast" rule but what advice would you give? My riding style is trial mostly (dry/damp conditions, hard packed/loose over hard, first fire roads). Thanks!
