- President Biden announced Tuesday a large-scale program to provide legal status and a path to citizenship for about 500,000 undocumented immigrants married to American citizens. The program could also impact "Dreamers," or the hundreds of thousands who were brought to the U.S. as children. CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang has more.

As an immigrant who studied in the US for 3 years, legally, this is a disgrace. What you are showing to anyone that even thinks of committing a crime by entering a foreign country without going through the legal access (as many of us did), you are showing them that this country does not support it’s law abiding residents.

My wife and I struggled for 2 years getting her green card status, paying thousands in attorny fees and jumping through so many hoops. This is a slap in the face to all legal citizens and greencard holders who did it the legal way. They broke the law and entered illegally, now they get rewarded. Makes no sense.

Additionally, without the fear of being deported, they are much more likely to help police solve crimes that would otherwise go unreported.
Just because your family got here a century earlier doesn't mean we get special treatment. American culture is a melting pot and always has been. We will change and shift with the new peoples who come to this land, but that doesn't take away from what makes us American. That is the American dream, and I'm happy to be a part of it. I came here as a 4 year old child because my parents were given a work visa, I was lucky being from a European nation with low immigration quotas. Some people aren't in that position, but they deserve a shot at being an American all the same.
The idea that a culture changing is a bad thing is looking at things the wrong way. Culture constantly changes, values evolve and change over time. Americans 200 years ago are fundamentally different than Americans now and that will continue to happen... even if we aren't there to witness it.

Not necessarily. If they came to the states undocumented and then married a US citizen (while in the states) it’s very difficult to obtain legal residency and citizenship. It’s not impossible but needs a very strong lawyer to plead the case to the judge.
If the person came with some sort of valid authorization (student visa) even if it expired the route to legal residency and citizenship is far easier than in the first case.
That’s what I was thinking too.

So if it's for people who have been here for over 10 years and married to Americans, why have they not taken steps to be legal Americans?
They go through an interview process - many are rejected even with an American spouse. And it cannot be appealed. If the interviewer doesn’t like the applicant, they can choose to reject the application. One person can decide the fate of a married couple. An interviewer may find the marriage fake but if the couple has been together for many years and the case cannot be appealed, that’s tough.
Because the present system does not offer them any change of status once you are undocumented

That’s not how citizenship works, being married to an American gives you a right to claim legal immigrant status. but it doesn’t give you full citizen rights. It just means they can’t be deported and file for legal immigration status
No it doesn’t grant them citizenship. They can apply in 5 yrs for citizenship. They cannot vote in Fred elections. Go look up voting rights in your state and learn how it works!

That just seems like common sense. I am glad that families are getting this relief today, and can move forward into their own American dream.
