The description is wrong. The times for the endings in the North American release are:
Greater than 30h 5m for the shame ending.
30h 5m - 5h 25m for the wave ending.
5h 25m - 2h 28m for the no helmet ending.
2h 28m - 0h 59m for the one piece ending.
Less than 59 minutes for the bikini ending.
Whether you played the game as normal Samus or suitless Samus doesn't not change these times. The only thing that changes when you finish the game as suitless Samus is that she uses the sprite from the one piece ending before the transformation.
I'm not sure where you got that information from, but all of the sources I could find claim that my times are correct, minus the fact that there was some confusion surrounding suitless Samus effecting the times. (One source didn't know that suitless Samus effected the times, while another source DID know, but didn't know that you could still get the worst ending with normal Samus.) Also, I recorded these endings myself and it definitely didn't take 30 hours to get the worst ending. For what it's worth, I played the GameCube port of the NES version that you can play in Metroid Prime.
@@TerminianHero The times were data mined directly from the game's code by someone who wrote a password generating utility. I confirmed them myself when looking through the game's disassembly while working on an unrelated ROM hack. If you'd like, I can send you a link to the forum post where I originally found the times.

I made this video a long time ago so I can't remember if I maybe used someone elses passwords to get the endings, but assuming I used my own the worst ending shouldn't take 30 hours. Unless I got that one as suitless Samus, but according to your post, being suitless shouldn't matter. I might just have to test these myself at some point.

To elaborate on how the timer works, there's a timer at memory address $2D which increments every frame and resets to 0 when it reaches 256. Every time it resets, it increments memory address $687D which will itself reset when it reach 208. Each time this value resets, it increments a 24-bit counter located at $687E-$6880. When you complete the game, the game determines which ending you will get by checking to see if the 24-bit timer is less than each of a series of values stored in ROM. These values are 122, 22, 10, and 4. Assuming the game is running at 60 fps, then the ending times can be determined in hours with the equation "(256 * 208 * n) / 60 / 60 /60" where n is each of the time values in the ROM.

@@adamklase8547 Interestingly, Samus was not the first character to pull the "he is a she" reveal. In NAMCO's Baraduke, Kissy (The main character) did the reveal first, but wasn't as popular because of how tougher Baraduke was.

Top average ending: Samus removes her armor and suit, revealing her bare skin and bikini and waves off at the player.

@@requiem165 Literally no one died in Zero Mission/Metroid 1. Kraid and Ridley both escaped, and mother brains AI chip survived and was rebuilt into a new body. Kraid also survived Super Metroid (he was captured by the Federation after Samus defeated him) but Ridley died for real. In Other M the Ridley we see is a clone who is defeated by Samus and then put into cyrostatis by the Federation but is then killed and cloned by the X-Parasites who Samus fights and absorbs in Fusion. After that Ridley is basically gone for good. As for Prime, there are two possibilities. One is that the Meta Ridley we see in prime is not the real ridley, and instead an updated Mecha Ridley from Zero Mission while the real Ridley is in recovery after his fight with Samus in Zero Mission where he got pelted by missiles in the face due to Samus panicking. This also means that the ending sequence (post Metroid Queen) in Samus Returns on 3DS is non canon and the original ending from the Game Boy game is the real canon one. The other option is the Ridley was turned into a cyborg after Metroid 1 and became Meta Ridley, but later by absorbing Metroid DNA he was able to recover part of and then all of his organic matter by the time super rolls around where the original Ridley dies for good.
Legend says it if you beat this game in less than 10 minutes, you can see Samus gets completely naked

Wow, the first ending I got when I played this game back in the day was her without her armor waving, then I played through it again without her suit and got the "bikini" ending. I always thought if I played through it again, would she be fully naked. I remember kids in school say, "No, she doesn't get fully naked." I wasn't shocked when Samus was revealed as a woman(honestly couldn't care less), I played through it a 2nd time without her suit. I am huge Metroid fan, but I think she is better in 2D, not a fan of the "Metroid: Prime" games.

Because, in the instruction manual(which is not long forgotten on games of today)it read Samus as a "he", so it was supposed to be a shocking revelation(but I was fine with it). Yes, I was curious if she got naked, because when you beat it after she had(I'm gonna call it her "Zero Suit")she wore a bikini, so I thought maybe less would come off. This is a decision by Nintendo, it's not like I made the game. :)
Sad Boi You have to look up the games. Games didn't have to be "dirty" or "pornographic" to be risque back in the day(Then again Atari was on board with all that, but I digress). They can be violent, show blood & gore. Nintendo had some games like that. Because back in the day there was no ESRB ratings. Just think about that for a second.

Okay, I just played through Metroid for the first time in 30 years. I got the ending where Samus raises his hand. Is it all.based on how fast you beat the game or how fast you escape at the end? Does the amount of power ups you attain effect anything? I had 6 of the energy tanks and 250 missiles although I know of one I missed for sure and probably more. Thanks for the video as well.
The first 2 games are based purely on time.
Super Metroid is the same except you also have the option of saving the animals.
Fusion and Zero Mission are based on time, completion, and difficulty. (Although Fusion only has a difficulty setting in the Japanese version, meaning there are some endings limited to that version. However, you CAN still see them outside of Japan by linking these 2 games together.)
The Prime trilogy and Other M are based purely on completion.
Samus Returns is based on time and difficulty, but not completion.
Hunters and Federation Force are based on if you completed a specific objective in the game. For Hunters you need to find out the "right" way to defeat the final boss, and for Federation Force you need to complete the bonus objective on mission 17.

hahaha I've never seen that first one........ I'm here btw cus I finally got the best ending, since back in the 80's. As a kid I didn't do myself any favors with this game. I think I played through like once, legit and then always used Justin Bailey code. I've been speed running through (at 3x speed via emulation) mastering memorizing the map every day for the past 10 days or so. I now "know" this game properly can play through and get all E tanks and missiles needed and beat it in about 33 mins at 3x speed.... at least I thought it was 3x speed but 33 mins at whatever ff speed, I just got the best ending with, so it must of been 1 hr or less real time.
No need to look at a map at all. Passed that need a few days ago. Better late than never I mastered this classic masterpiece.
I heard there was a magazine advertising Metroid before Samus was revealed to be a woman. It had a picture of Samus in her armor with a bunch of women in bikinis swooning over her.

Because Metroid was the title of the game, and nobody knew her name at the time. So they assumed "Metroid" were their name since that was the only information they gathered, I did the same on the Wii as a kid. And now, it's a meme.

As a kid back in the early 90s playing this, I initially didn't even know Samus was a woman. I thought it was a dude. I knew of the Justin Bailey code that let you play as Justin Bailey but I thought they were two separate people back then.

That's part of it since "Other M" is almost certianly short for "Other Metroid", but that's not all. Other M's title has multiple references to Samus's motherly relationship with the baby metroid.
If you put the "M" before the "Other" it becomes "Mother", meaning the game could be called "Metroid Mother". "MOM" is also the abbreviated form of "Metroid Other M".
So basically the title has 3 meanings.

How to get the bikini end?
Not happy with the labeling of best/worst endings... in all endings, you win the game. The sexualisation of the character is not a good thing. A better label would be best/worst *time*.
