    Watched all of 157, did not see this live but thank you all for your enthusiasm and preservation efforts. You don't always have to agree with the placing of a monument or remembrance but you have to learn from it.

    Just recently visited Gettysburg for the first time the end of July, 2020. Day one, the temp was a mild 98 degrees, day two it was a blustering 99 degrees. We did a self tour. I highly recommend doing a guided tour. Next time I will. As a child I had a friend who was a civil war buff. I fought the battle of Gettysburg many a times on those warm summer days in Michigan. I heard names of places in the battle that I thought were so cool, round top, little round top, the wheat field. The coolest name was the Davila’s den. We always ended the day with Pickett’s Charge and a rousing speech from the leader of our little army. As he drew his sword and beckoned us forward. None of us made it to the stone wall, as we died, rose, and died again. A swim in the lake. Better get on home for supper. Wow to have walk in those places of my childhood memories. I was truly on hallowed ground. (John B).

    If this place is infested with snakes, imagine being a soldier marching into Devil's Den, dodging bullets, ducking canon fire only to step close to a copper head. Very hard day for all involved. Thank you for these videos. I enjoy this point of view.

    It's wonderful that Gettysburg has a commitment to keeping the battlefield in a state of preservation, with an eye toward historical accuracy. The site of the most iconic battle in America, it's important to future generations of Americans.
    What they did to the battlefield of Waterloo...has confounded and frustrated military history scholars ever since...they bulldozed the very ridge that was Wellingtons position for the entire battle, and moved the earth into a large mountain called the 'Lions Mound'...altering the landscape forever. I'm glad Gettysburg hasn't done anything stupid like that.

    Do a short tour of the Jenny Wade house...the only civilian killed during the battle. Been to her house and you can still see where the bullet went through 2 doors and struck her in the back killing her instantly.

    I have always known about the dead soldier in Devil's Den, and visited that spot 25 years ago, BUT I was NOT aware that the soldier did not die where he "fell" between those rocks. If that was an actual deceased soldier, who was dragged into that spot for a photo op, that seems a bit ghoulish and disrespectful in my opinion. Nobody's fallen corpse should be dragged 75 yards, and "staged" for some photographer's photo op.

    I think it's important to remember that one of the things the South was fighting for was to keep the practice of slavery, seems that fact often gets brushed under the rug a lot. The battlefield tours are great but remember what the fighting was about.

      Not to belittle your comment as it is very important but these people's Grandparents were fighting for the same thing 1775-1783. Freedom from England and to continue a life they brought from Europe.

    If the soldier wasn't bloated, was it a fake? Is the soldier just someone playing dead?

  • @tberkoff

    I'm assuming that the small rocks in between the two large boulders at the "Sniper's Nest" were added/improved on after the war to enhance the visitor experience? Or are they the original rocks from 1863?
    I wonder why those small rocks were placed there originally? To keep cattle/live stock in an enclosed area?

    • @whodey59
      @whodey59 6 лет назад

      Doublecanister4thUSArty I was just there and the the rocks are not stacked the same as in the photo.
      They may be the original rocks but probably have fallen down many times in the last 150 years.
      The snipers probably stacked them loosly before the battle.

    • @tberkoff
      @tberkoff 6 лет назад +1

      There is no evidence it was used as a sniper's nest during the battle. The body was dragged to the spot for the photo.

    • @whodey59
      @whodey59 6 лет назад +2

      Standing in there, and seeing how it commands the ridge of Little Round Top, with complete protection from 3 sides....if it wasn't used as a sniper position, then an opportunity was lost. It is in a perfect strategic position to snipe officers on Round Top.

    • @whodey59
      @whodey59 6 лет назад

      And the area is way too small to keep livestock. I believe the rock wall was built as protection from the heights of Little Round Top as it directly faces the Union troop lines.
