I remember when most service stations had uniformed attendants who pumped your fuel, washed your windshield and checked your vehicle's oil level at no extra change and did not expect a tip. And when fuel stations were in hot competition for customers, you also sometimes were given a prize such as glassware or green stamps that could be collected and redeemed for prizes if you told them to fill up your vehicle's fuel tank. Those were the days when fuel was so cheap, it was a typical entertainment for a family to take the car out on a long Sunday drive to do local sightseeing. And if you took your car to a drive-in restaurant or a drive-in movie theater, your tray of food would be fastened to the driver's side door.

Something that even younger drivers want back are knobs, buttons, and switches for A/C, music, and defroster. Touch screens require you to dangerously look away from the road and require tactile (not tactical) precision. It’s easy to miss whatever setting you want to change. Knobs and switches made it easier in that all you’d have to do is reach over and feel whatever knob or switch and adjust it without taking your eyes off the road (or in some cases pull over to make adjustments).

I agree with the idea of bringing ash trays and cigarette lighters back! Like you said they can be useful storage space for non-smokers.

You can still custom order a car. Of course the dealer doesn't want you to. They want to sell what they have in stock.
However, custom ordering may take a loooong time depending on when the factory is again building that particular model.
A couple decades ago I had the temerity to want a Ford Ranger with a stick shift AND a tachometer. Apparently that was an "upgrade" dash option that only came with the automatic transmission.
I also wanted the much larger power mirrors.
Took like 6 weeks for the vehicle to come in.

I ordered interior and exterior colors, and all the options with none I didn't want from Ford at no extra charge. The new car I wanted was 8 hours away and had a $400 subwoofer I didn't order. They ate it on that and just gave it to me as it was cheaper for them than shipping another car from further away. Papers and payment was already a done deal. 🏁

The headlight dimmer switch was by far one of my absolute favorites. I’m almost fifty, still pretty young, but old enough to remember driving a few cars with them. Loved it! I was told that they stopped making them because where I lived it snowed a lot and the salt they used on the roads would rot the switch out…eventually you would have a rusty hole in the floor where the switch once was. I remember a buddy stomping on it and putting the front of his foot through the floor LOL!

They did tend to jam after enough salt to sand got into them. The first car I owned had auto-dimming, so you could often let the car do the switching. I hate using that tire sealant kit. I never knowhow much to use and the goo in the kit has to be replaced. Also my father in law is a mechanic. He says that goo is pain to clean out when replacing the tire. If you don’t clean it, the wheel will have balancing issues.

My car is from 2012 and has a CD player. Im kind of annoyed because if I had waited like a year or two it might have had bluetooth instead of an aux input, since most phones are phasing out the 3.5mm port and I can't use it in my car that way. I don't even own music cds anymore.

Many memories, some fond, others nightmarish. I was prone to horrible car sickness as a child and into my adulthood. I had to sit to my mother's right against the door with the vent window blowing in my face. Added to my discomfort was that on family trips there were four smokers, both brothers and my parents. Our 1958 Buick Roadmaster was well-equipped for this with lighter/ashtrays in both rear armrests and 2 up front as well. It was horrible. Seeing the hood ornament bit reminded me of the nickname "sparrow strainers". The Buick had 2, one on each fender.

My Uncle Walt drove ONLY Plymouth Fury's, from the 50s through the 80s, I miss him a lot, but I miss watching the turn signal indicators at the end of the front fenders, facing the driver. What great memories, Uncle Walt really loved his Plymouths!

Look at the drab car colors today also. Just black, white, silver or grey for most.

They do have that nice deep rich red now, but it’s sooooo popular that I’ve already gotten sick of it, AND I’ve seen some waaay too prematurely sun-faded that turn to some awful uneven pinkish tone! 🤮

I had a 1920’s encyclopedia - in it was a car, of course. I remember it stating “There are no more inventions that can be made for the modern automobile. The only items that are left to add would be something like a flower holder’” 😂

Some cars don’t even have spare tires at all. They just have an aerosol can of air that you put in the flat tire.

An aerosol can of air will not work on a tire blow out.

Bring the ashtrays back they prevent forest fires and littering, which is a modern day problem

One thing missed is the vent down near the floor on each side. Essentially a simple door, which allowed air direct from a duct beside the engine. Boy did you ever get a lovely (quiet) blast of air through that!!!! Leaves and all, too. I have often complained that we no longer get good outside air into the cabin (sometimes that's all you want). The only way now is to open windows, which can be noisy and of course the side vent is gone, which also aimed bucketloads of air into the cabin.

Seriously most smokers didn’t use the ashtray to put out their cigarette most smokers use their cigarette to maybe put some ashes in there but if they wanna get rid of their cigarette after They are done smoking. They just flick it out the window and that caused a lot of forest fires.

When my parents smoked, they HATED seeing other smokers being so irresponsible with their butts, ashes, and smoke - they refused to make their habit everyone else’s AND to litter through it in ways they’d never litter through anything else

I prefer the dimmer switch on the floor. There was no reason to change that. Just like the headlight switches that were pulled out to turn on the lights. There was no reason to change that. I also really miss the bench seats and hate center consoles. I also much prefer the automatic shift selector on the column vs. on the floor. I never did understand why they started putting power windows in non-luxury cars. My pickup was an `87. It had no AC, manual crank windows, no carpet, and it did have vent windows. It also had a carburetor. That was just the way I liked it.

4:35 About 10 years ago I working at a Pizza Hut on a dry winter night, I came out back to take the trash out or something and I heard a crackling sound and notice the wood chips in the landscaping was on fire! I went inside and got a bucket of water to throw on it. There was a cigarette butt in the area so we think someone flicked it out their window and it started that fire. Annecdotal but it can happen.
