Not an ego insight…nor an ounce of smugness…just two young people doing there thing and being themselves, which is infections and so refreshing in equal measures! 🤗
    Keep on Posting intelligent informative and highly enjoyable well made vlogs…your a lovely couple! 😘x.

    Couldn't have timed that breakdown better. Extremely lucky it wasn't either later on the tidal section, or earlier alongside one of the weirs! If you revisit Runnymede, maybe consider a hike up the hill to the RAF memorial. As well as being extremely poignant, with memorials to some of our greatest heroes, there's an amazing view across London and Heathrow.

    @billharris6886 8 месяцев назад +1

    Hi Danni and Joe, sorry to hear of your breakdown. I'm glad you weren't cruising through downtown London. Being the propulsion system is all mechanical, your failure is quite common. You need at least 6 cylinders for an engine to have a smooth flow of power coming off the crankshaft. With 4 cylinders, the output is a series of power pulses, which loosens those bolts attaching the flywheel to the gearbox. Those need to be tightened regularly but, since they are hiding under the flywheel cover, they are easy to overlook. Fortunately, the Tech was able to get things repaired without a trip back to the marina to pull the engine.

    • @DanniandJoe
      @DanniandJoe  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks Bill! Never really thought about that with 4 cylinders - 6's do sound and feel lovely though. I've got a bit of a thing for 5 cylinders like my old Volvo!

    • @billharris6886
      @billharris6886 8 месяцев назад

      @@DanniandJoe Each cylinder puts out a power pulse of about 130 degrees of rotation so, for each 360 degree rotation of the crankshaft, with a 4 cylinder you end up with 2 - 50 degree periods without power. That deadtime induces a noticable vibration in output power from the crankshaft. A 6 cylinder by comparison has about 30 degrees of overlap in power per revolution. The average person doesn't know (or probably care) about this, but being an engineer, such things interest me.

    You can always mark the nuts/bolts to see if they're shifting! See the wheel nuts on buses - it's a quick visual check to see if any are loosening, maybe when you check oil before cruising.
    I prefer to use loctite on everything, it really helps, and tends to keep corrosion away too.
    There are different grades - blue is fairly easy to undo - red you'll need to heat up the soften it to undo, but is fairly permanent in it's effect.
    Green - good luck undoing that! I've used green in error before, only way is tons and tons of heat!
    There are different grades of bolts as well of course - I remember having to buy special ones to fit a propshaft since the standard ones will just shear fairly quickly.

  • @thepilgrim4473
    @thepilgrim4473 8 месяцев назад +1

    Ask the engineer for the “specific torque” for all those bolts Joe and check ‘em regularly. You might want to think about adding an AquaDrive or Python Drive cv joint with thrust bearing welded to the hull. It also has the added advantage of removing at least fifty percent of the noise from the engine as it’s transferred directly to the hull. Costs a few shekels mind you, but peace of mind is invaluable in itself eh?

    • @DanniandJoe
      @DanniandJoe  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah the engines pretty loud when sat inside.
      The problem with checking the bolts is they’re hidden inside the bell housing which forms the two rear engine mounts so the engine has to be raised to check them - awful design 😫

    Hi again Joe, sorry to see the gearbox parted company with Engine?… silly question but did you use long enough studs and either Nylock nuts or at least thread seal? The engine/gearbox joint takes a hammering every time you put into drive, imagine the force created by the BMC engine against a small gearbox… it will find the weakest point. Vibration will affect “Nut/Stud” tightness hence you must either use thread seal, lock washers or indeed Nylocks. It’s all a learning curve mate, I hope no serious damage has been done to stern shaft… 👍🏻

    • @DanniandJoe
      @DanniandJoe  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah honestly can't remember what I used when I fitted it but it's whatever was on there before - it's lasted a couple of years to be fair! The RCR man Pete said that those are the longest bolts that would fit but he did use lock washers and thread lock + there was a bolt missing from when I fitted it so 6 bolts vs 5 we should be good for at-least another two years! 😂

    • @DanniandJoe
      @DanniandJoe  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey no worries!
      So just on tick over usually - it depends on what setup you’ve got really.
      Ours for example;
      780ah of batteries - they’re standard lead acid so only half the capacity is usable - 390ah - so if they’re completely flat our setup would take 13 hours to charge (390 ➗ 30a from the charger)
      Usually you’ll just be topping them up if you’re not cruising so even an hour or so will help
      Hope of help!

      Oh 100%, but haven’t got the right tools, lifting equipment etc on the boat & I pay for a service so happy to use it. Cost me £25 (as we were inside the M25) and two cups of tea 😂

    Spend some money on your engine and gear box instead of all these electronics they don’t make sense

      So when videos are ‘sponsored’ that’s how we earn money, these videos take my whole week to film & produce they’re my full time job. RUclips itself doesn’t pay enough so companies pay us for little adverts and give us gadgets. That’s how RUclips works in general even on the large channels. We’re saving for much needed engine work and have something lined up in the new year. But yeah no adverts no channel unfortunately!

    As they say me old there must be two of you as one of you couldn’t be that stupid!! Now when you have an hour free check ALL your bolts in the engine and tighten accordingly. Have a look at Narrowboat Will when he checks his engine, he never leaves anything unchecked. 60 minutes out of your life could save you a hell of a lot of grief in the future. Really enjoy your vids however,sometimes despair 😂😂😂

      😂😂😂. We were just in such a rush with so many time constraints I was worried I’d find loose bolts. Now we’re through the rushed part it’s definitely time for some much needed care in the engine bay

      Worth noting that if we didn’t make it through Chertsey lock that day then we wouldn’t have made it off of the Thames, didn’t have so much as a day spare to fix anything if we did find an issue so it was either send it or turn around
