The actual 3rd anniv itself gave 20 pulls, definitely not good, but not that bad either ig. Also, every New Chinese Year, they also give free 10 pulls, but this time they add additional 3. So why the three pulls becomes so important? Because that is about dev *appreciation* towards players, basically said "as a thanks for playing this game for all these years, we gave you 3 pulls". That's what makes a lot of genshin players rage, all of their (players) support toward the game were worth only THREE pulls.

Nikke had quite the rocky start - massive damage nerfs due to BP deficits which gatekept progression, expensive pulls relative to cost, loading screen crashes, the first event (NO CALLER ID) with a hard mode that was nigh unplayable even for day one players, limitations of vertical screen etc. The first X'Mas event was what convinced me that Nikke had what it takes to keep going. From Anne's heartwarming story, to the actually fun minigame that wasn't RNG-based, click to progress like the previous ones, to the first interactive map we had, Miracle Snow had it all. Then they reduced the damage nerf from BP deficits, the PC client came out, the main story legitimately got better into Chapters 12 and beyond, they made an actual playable NPC for a one day April Fool's event, Overzone coming in with one of the best stories I've seen in a mobile game, players getting at least 10 free pulls every event... Nikke just kept giving and giving. The reason I play it avidly is because ShiftUp has proven to me that they care about their customers - far more than Mihoyo, Nexon, and Lasengle etc have.

@@FrizFrozThe have different producers, but Cai Haoyu would be the main reason why Genshin rewards are so lame in comparison to HSR, David Jiang is the actual producer of Star Rail and guess what, he assumed as Honkai Impact 3 producer after Cai Haoyu (Actual Genshin producer) left that same role (Yes, he was in HI3 too) and the funny part is HI3 rewards where mediocre until Jiang took the lead, and since he is the producer of HSR from the very beginning is normal that HSR rewards would be FAR BETTER than the shitty genshin ones, just because Cai Haoyu levels of greed are unmeasurable, in fact, Haoyu is the responsible that China gets an exclusive PS5 slim bundle that gives you "one skin selector" for "free" (from the new ones of Ganyu and Shenhe), and the fact is China is where the 70%+ of genshin profits is so if they treat their most profitable community like that, is no wonder why the rest of the world is shit in their eyes.

Seeing that Modernia was re-run, there's a possibility that Red Hood will have a re-run with her banner at the 2nd Anniversary which will be on November 4.

Maybe the 2nd Anniversary is either her banner is re-run like modernia or higher rate like winter rupee/winter anne. However, as she is a permanent pilgrim unit, it is more likely that they will rerun the banner parallel with the 2nd anniv unit, people will always want the most broken unit on the game after all, and if somehow in output she becomes powercrept, that flexibility to burst anytime is still worth it.

One thing I love about Nikke is how the devs really put time and effort into the characters, not only the designs and animation but also their personnality. Big things like events are a great intorduction to the characters, but they also have unique Blabla messages, small scenarios in buildings and advise sessions for each Nikke and it really helps give more life to the waifus !
It's just a "simple" gacha game (not an open world like Genshin), but Shift Up still take the time to give a character to the Nikkes.
As someone who plays for the collection rather than the meta, it feels even more satisfying to know that I don't just pull for a design :)

Considering the lack of real time pvp like epic seven it seems its more bragging rights than anything. Being at the top of the arena, or tower, something like that.

DISCLAIMER. for those who have watched this video under the impression that the dailies do not take long and you're from other gacha games, nikke's dailies are, on the contrary, EXTREMELY LENGTHY.
I watched this video believing this video's claim that the dailies are short. WRONG. With events, it can easily take 1 hour plus to finish. Without events and if your account is still new, around 3 months or younger, your dailies will still be extremely lengthy and tedious due to modes like special interception and simulation room.
Emphasis on simulation room. If you care about min maxing resources, you're essentially forced to play longer on this mode in order to obtain buffs, and these buffs are essential in helping you clearing the latter stages, especially if you're in the 160 wall or have an accoun that is still young.
If there's an event, your dailies can skyrocket to a whopping 1 hour requirement to be completed. This is because it may consist of event story, co-op, mini games, solo raids, union raids, collab mini games, and many more. All of these mentioned game modes are tasks you must do daily as they do not allow you the flexibility of doing it on another day, hence forcing you to go through each mode one by one everyday, contributing to the daily grind fatigue which can reach possibly up to 1 hour!
If short dailies are an important factor for you, then you should think twice before starting nikke. I understand how difficult it is to completely stop playing a game once you've started so i hope this helps those who cares abt this.
I am literally a person who watched this video before determining whether i should start nikke. Short dailies was a factor for me so i believed this guy's comment on it. Unfortunately, it is very inaccurate and there's actually numerous factors he failed to mention, such as events and a young account contributes to longer dailies, potentially reaching an hour plus!

It is worth mentioning that dailies and daily task aren't the same, dailies are the short daily mission you complete in order to get the premium daily free income of gems (premium currency), this ARE short (15-20 min), for example, they don't tell you to complete the simulation room, only to play one match, etc.
daily task add to that, especially during events, and every game has them, Genshin, Star Rail, Blue Archive, and so on, comes with the nature of events. And although nikkes has a lot of this events, some of them are only twice a month and the rewards are comparable to doing dailies for a week, just extra stuff to fill in time if you wish.
if you wish to minmax, then yeah it's gonna take time, because then its no longer a daily or daily task, its a farm/grind for resources.

I started just last year with the Nier crossover, since I love that franchise. I intended to drop it since I had never played a gacha game before, and didn't really have much interest. I quickly changed my mind when the story pulled me in, and someone told me to play OverZone, and that was it. Still playing today, and have lots of units, and have only spent money on a couple of the passes.
What keeps me around really is the story. The writers for the game are (usually) great.

Yeah, the story is really well-done, especially compared to other gacha games. I started playing for the "plot" but ended up wanting to see more of the actual plot by the end of the prologue
I think the best part is the line-by-line writing tho. The overarching plot is great, but the execution really makes it. Like, the reveal with Marian gave me chills, Anis's lines are genuinely pretty funny, the bond stories, etc.
There are technical errors sometimes like wrong pronouns or typos, but besides that, ShiftUp's localisation/writing teams are so blessed

no one is gonna trash on you for making mistakes, we're all human. its when you choose to ignore criticism and never strive to be better is what i have a problem with.
and i feel like less and less people these days are putting up with that bullcrap after what genshin did to them.
and honestly theses so many factors that led to their success. I could make an entire list at this point, but the revenue speaks for itself. Basically they went above and beyond with everything they did. I think some key factors were..
    1. they really have no competition, the gameplay genre is essentially duck hunt which no one has touched in years. even outside the gacha space
2.censorship is rampant these days and people are sick of it. yes big companies want to market to everyone thats why booba bad, but holy fk. if you try to please everyone you please no one.
thats not to say nikke is perfect, people had some issues with the christmas event. people are asking for more animations and illustrations in the story and events. thats all fine because what matters is intent. they've shown in the past they're willing to fix things so ill support them if they keep supporting us

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. I started playing in November in the middle of the Red Hood event.
Like most I didn’t think the game had a lot of substance until I got to mid game and hit a bunch of walls.
I wanted to break through so started looking for guides on how to get better and found your videos!
They have been so helpful in not only making me a better player, but also in unlocking the true greatness of the game.
I’m still only 2/5ths of the way through the 160 wall. But yesterday I beat my first special interception in Chatterbox!

And I am currently pushing the 2nd most damage in my Union with the people around me having 30-40k more attack rating!
Thank you for the help, I wouldn’t be enjoying the game or finding so much success without your instruction. Your videos are always SSS tier and the time and effort you put into them is always appreciated.
Looking forward to future content. And man I hope I don’t find myself on the wrong end of Futamilk. Now in more ways than one!

I would like to add, this game has been very good about controlling power creep. The units that were available at release for anyone to pull are still considered the game's meta units. This means that even new players can start the game right now can pull for units that are just as good as the ones that were during the release.
None of the limited units or the collab units have majorly upturned the meta, at best they're "as good" as the meta, but a lot are worse, so people who end up missing out on certain banners or certain characters are not going to be left to dry as long as they're playing at their normal rate.
The fact that the developers have been able to keep power creep under control after more than one year of this game running is a testament to their ability to balance the gameplay between free to play or low investment players versus high spending whales.
The funny thing is, Shift Up was so afraid of messing with the meta, the anniversary unit, Red Hood, was initially released to be fairly average. This actually caused backlash because Red Hood was hyped up to be one of the strongest lore units out there, so for her to be so weak and a little bit more difficult to pull for was a disappointment. After only about a week of politely asking the developers to buff her, they responded and made her overpowered. And even though she is really strong, you can still use the units from release and be able to tackle most of the end game content even if you don't have her.
I've never heard of a game where the player base was begging for the dev to make a unit purposefully overpowered just to match the lore, but it just goes to show how invested the player base is on the franchise. Nobody is complaining about the fact that Red Hood is now another meta unit because it only makes sense that she's that strong, and at the same time even if you don't have her, it's not like you're suddenly locked out from the end game content.
I came from another gotcha game called The King of Fighters All Stars, which unfortunately was run by NETMARBLE, it was only on its third year and even after the first couple banners we were already dealing with power creep. Every single new unit that was released automatically made the previous units worthless. The content was geared around these new units so if you came in way too late into the game's life, you already missed out on a lot of units that would have been able to help you bat some of the events and collaboration content. What's worse, a lot of the end game skills and mechanics were locked behind maxing out your dupes. If you don't pull a total of nine copies of the same unit, you don't have access to their EX skills. Those EX skills were game-changing. But next time a new character was released, if you did't pull for it, you were already behind.
On top of that, the mileage tickets or pity system were only relevant to that banner. If you didn't redeem the pity tickets, you were so out of luck.
They had a wishlist kind of like this game's system, but they stopped adding new characters to it only months after it's release. This is a problem Nikke has with its Silver Mileage system, but it's not too bad because, once again, THE RELEASE CHARACTERS are still meta. So if you fail to redeem a pity ticket, it was back to exclusive limited banners where you couldn't pull for the characters again once the event was over.
The game just felt bad to play because it was repeatedly punching me in the dick if I didn't try to keep up. It had zero respect for my time.
We would intermittently get replays of old events, but the content and rewards that are provided for those events were scaled towards the time those events were initially released, so the events would be either too easy or they would not provide any new characters for us to pull for.
It really hurts to say this because I'm a competitive King of Fighters fighting game player and I've been playing it since 1998. A lot of their content pandered to us long time veteran fans, and it feels like a lot of the decisions that made the game feel awful to play was FOMO forced by NETMARBLE and completely undermined the passion of the content that the devs probably had for it. They had music remixes of all my favorite themes, they had alter versions of all my favorite characters, there was a type of self-awareness in the writing that made it fun to to read, just like this games. But the monetization for the game was ridiculous. I felt like I was never content with the team I had because the meta would change almost every couple months and it felt like I had to whale just a little bit to keep up.
That's an absolutely horrible feeling. Wth this NIKKE, if I buy microtransaction packs, I can go anywhere from the $5 pack to the $20 mission passes and I don't feel like I'm getting punched in the dick every time I spend money. And even funnier with this game is that if you start buying the packs that were meant for whales you actually get a reduced value out of them. meaning, for each dollar you spend, you get less currency, pouls, upgrades, etc then you would if you just bought the cheaper $5 or $10 packs. So if you are a minnow or dolphin spender, it is very easy to budget your way with this game because you just have to be able to do a little bit of math to see that you are losing value per dollar if you spend too much. For the whales, they don't care, so it doesn't affect them. For players like us, this just means that we can skip out on 90% of the micro transactions and still be able to keep up with the meta.
it's amazing how this is the first type of game I played where I didn't feel like I was constantly being punched in the dick for my wallet. I know that expression is weird since this game has a lot of big... assets, but I feel the crude way of expressing that would relate to a lot of players who dealt with other games that don't provide this kind of value.
The game is still attracting new players. The archive option is one of the best things for this game because when new players talk about the story and how good it is, veterans can tell these new players hey, try these other stories out because they're really really good and will fill out the lore of the game quickly and not feel like they missed out on a large portion of this game's history.
The other good thing is this game rewards you for spending a little bit of time on it but it doesn't need you to spend a lot of time on it unless you personally want to do that. You don't have to place first on every raid and every ranking to be able to keep up with the end game, that stuff, like the creator said, it's just for flexing and has very little impact on your ability to enjoy the game. It just feels so weird to play a game where it uses the concepts that a lot of us Western gamers complain about when it comes to micro transactions, but at the same time it actually encourages you to want to buy these packages to support the developer without feeling like you're getting mugged for your money.
The only part that kind of sucks is the gacha costumes. some of those costumes are really good but you have to spend at max 60 bucks to get them. My only cope for that is that you do get a lot of other usable items and materials along the way to getting the costume. it's not the best excuse for its expensive price, but considering how many freebies you can get and how free to play friendly the game is, I'm going to give the game a pass on that one. If that's all they have to do to keep the game running for another 5 10 years, I'm more than willing to deal with that. So far, they've only done that once every 3 months so I'm willing to give them a break on it.
What was the last straw for me with KOF AS was their 4th anniversary. It was lackluster. Freebies were abysmal, there was almost no fanfare and it was just another opportunity to sell more whale packages.
F that. No more NETMARBLE games.

I write this review not as NIKKE heavy fanbase, but as casual NIKKE player (usually only play 10 minutes for reaching minimum daily rewards).
Aside of the main theme of the gameplay (Cover Shooting, which i don't really fond of it), the other aspects of this game is really really perfect (yes, literally perfect). Story, BGM, Interface, QoL Aspects, EVERYTHING is really well-made. And Pseychie (also the rest of this videos' comments) described it very accurately.
If you ever played Mobile-JRPG Games like GBF, FGO, etc. It has similarities like passive skills, active skills, equipments, etc., but the difference is it is just Cover Shooting, which is not just about strategy, but also ur shooting accuracy.
When it's just a regular battle, you can do full auto and rely on character skills (while you doing ur RL-activities). If you want a challenging one, there are some stages where auto is unavailable.
For Equipment, there's no variety so u don't need to grind some kind of rare equipments.
And the story? you'll love it i guarantee.
if you missed out or forgot the Campaign/main story (like accidentally pressing skip button or comeback player), There's Story Archive (i'll explain below) so you can rewatch the story.
    Bonus (My Advice) :
    1. Do daily login (at least get the 24H AFK/Passive rewards) until some point where you can continue the Campaign Story by upgrading ur NIKKEs
    2. Do Campaigns until you can't go further while skipping the entire story (at this phase you can do ur RL-activities since you just waiting for the battle)
    3. Repeat 1 & 2
    4. When you want to read the story, just go to Outpost > Command Center > Recollection
    5. Marathon the story as much as you want.
    Cheers

Nikke truly was a pleasant surprise. Like many, I decided to try the game on a whim (combination of being bored/looking for a new game) about two months ago. I was expecting a trashy fanservice cash grab game that is unfortunately all too common in the gacha/mobile game space. But after trying it out, the amount of depth to the game genuinely surprised me. As someone who was used to being treated like trash by Genshin before I quit a year and a half in, every point mentioned in the video is pretty on point. I have no qualms about spending the $5 a month just to support the developers even though I usually try to stick to F2P. It just goes to show the age old saying is still true, don't judge a book by its cover!

I think one of the things that got me into Nikke was its excellent choice of (music) artists (and later also artists for character and enemy design and such).
I myself have always been a rhythm game player and never been really into gacha games, one time I played FE Heroes and I thought that was nice, but it really didn't struck me. Last year at summer time however I recognized that Feryquitous (one of my favorite artists, especially considering rhythm games) and Cosmograph, another artist known from the rhythm game scene, made music for this game. So I was curious. Could this game really be that "bad" if it had those artists? So naturally I got the game on mobile and was instantly hooked, sometime later getting it on PC and playing since. The soundtrack is awesome, the design is on top, the raptures are cool and above all the Campaign (as well as the most important events) have some amazing lore and worldbuilding, which I also very much appreciate. Even though I must say that I quite frankly was a bit apprehensive playing this game at first I grew to being proud of being part of it and its community.
And even if I had a rough start with gacha rates, sometimes your luck really explodes, if only for a moment and then you will be satisfied. So for anyone out there: don't give up!
And as for the video: it really encapsulates how different Nikke is from other games its genre, almost always aware of its shortcomings and being considerate about mistakes and opinions of the fan-base. So good work, I will gladly wait and see what you have in store up next!

I played Nikke day 1 then quit around the first event (No Caller ID) due to phone performance (potato phone) then came back sometime around Sakura's event. What makes Nikke good?
    1. It's the story. It has one of the best stories I have ever played in a Gacha game: the tutorial immediately hooks you to the game. In any story, you look for basically 2 things: (1) the emotion of the story (in which they really invests upon) and (2) the replay ability (you can repeat the story as much as you want and still get emotionally invested like item number 1).
    2. The characters are so lovable and adorable: from the simple ones (like the cool Rapi, loudmouth Anis, and passionate Neon) to the more complex ones (like the calculating Dorothy, atoning Rapunzel, and utilitarian Ether). You have a pick on anything that suits your personality.
    3. The reloading mechanism in this game is hype! I grew with guns and the reloading here is awesome!
    4. We have yet to mention the OSTs!! From Modernia Battle OST which really gives you the chills, Laplace's realization after her ___________ (redacted for spoliers), and finally the famous "Goodbye for Now" which is a tearjerker. It's an added bonus!!

As someone who has been playing NIKKE since day one, I actually forget sometimes on what the devs have change because of the community and actually listen, like the quick fight system. I do agree that the grind on this game isnt as horrible as other games but there is still space to improve such as manufacturer armors, add something to create armor pieces by sacrificing other pieces of the same armor type (my cope is high on this). i do hope they continue to listen mean while the player base continue to support the game and everyone around it (devs, voice actors, content creators, ect)

So I played Destiny child when it was still active. When it went offline i was pissed off. Specially when i kept seeing in the discord that everyone thought they shut it down to put more effort into Nikke. I wanted to hate it. I wanted to demand Destiny child back. But trying out Nikke and realizing the OST is some fire and the attack animations actually make sense I was hooked. For refrence in Nikke i havent had any of my friends ask "why are your characters skeeting magic jizz on enemies?" Did i mention the OST being fire? Also, when explaining to people about the game, I feel like less of a creep when I dont have to describe to people that i am collecting "children" like when I was playing Destiny child

As someone who has been a Genshin player day 1 and also plays NIKKE, everything you said is 100% correct. And I find myself playing NIKKE waaaaay more because the grind is actually worth the time. Genshin forces you to spend HOURS grinding every day for little to no rewards. The recent “3 free pulls” for their new year lantern festival event was an absolute insult.

Day one player here. another reason the game retains its player base is that power creeping is almost nonexistent which is a big turn-off for me, and you won't be forced to pull for dupes coz they don't lock mechanics behind it, just extra stats. so you can pretty much get all the unit you like even there's no soft pity in it combined it with how generous they are for giving out free pulls.
aside from this, you nailed everything else. good video. keep it up!

i started this past november and im already swimming in SSRs i feel myself not going to use yet. so yeah, the game is very giving. also your videos have helped me understand the more complex mechanics of the game. however my one complaint with the devs is that they aren't leaning enough into the adult stuff. i dont mean just nudity or anything like that, but they aren't really showing us the ravages of war between the nikkes and the raptures. i personally want to see that. the atmosphere of the game is constant death and mental anguish. not titties in your face.

Another plus is, the CUMMANDER dares to sleep with some of the NIKKE.
So checking out the event story or bond story is very interesting to know who made it that far or who doesn't.
The event story also relate with previous event story. hence following the side story is as interesting as the main story

    Be me:
    - Just bought a new phone
    - decided to play some anime gacha game
    - download Nikke and Genshin around the same time
    - played approximately 2 hours a day for each game (dw, I'm still on semester break rn and still have my social life intact)
    - one week later, I got full SSR team of lvl 60 in Nikke while barely hit character level 30 without even having a 5 star character after 30 pulls in Genshin.
So yeah, I know where i'll be staying

As a day 1 player it’s so nostalgic to looking back into good old days.
I was never interested in in NIKKE until just before the release I saw Volume animation and decided to try it to see myself how far it can actually go.
I downloaded it and started with very low expectations and after I finished the tutorial I finally saw, that’s despite all flaws the game has the breathing and living soul.
It is first and probably last time I spent the entire week to reroll to the one specific girl in gacha who brings the sword to a gunfight and still wins.
And despite every day dramas, insane amount of bugs, when almost every character didn’t work properly (anyone remember, how Harran burst scales from her charge damage?), censorship controversies, CP deficit issues, unkillable train, I managed to survive and experienced firsthanded the best event I’ve ever seen in gachas - Overzone event.
Anyway, thank you for your wholesome and funny content, please keep going.

Although Nikke has indeed achieved significant success, it won't even come close to Star Rail. The revenue statistics in the video do not cover the Chinese market and the PC+PS platforms, which make up at least 90% of Star Rail's market.

I feel like my biggest gripes with the game are the daily grind and the unit investment costs, also the low useability of most of the cast. I guess I've been spoiled by Honkai Star rail but Nikke's dailies are a slog, and stuff like SI even with me being level 230 with all the meta units I still can't reliably auto them all the time (sometimes it works so it's in an rng state) so it takes a lot more focus than most gacha dailies in general. My two other main gachas are HSR and GBF and HSR you get all the dalies done in legit 5 minutes, and GBF is a grind game but I can put however much effort I want into the grind on each day.
Unit investment is also crazy high so rolling new units you may not even be able to properly use them for months cause the skill investment costs are so high and you can rng never roll gear that you and OL for them (my state with bs scarlet and scarlet). Along with that, there's so few places to actually use more than 1-2 teams that 90% of the cast literally gets brought off the bench for me.

I just wanted to say that yes the coomer bait is absolutely by far the biggest reason for nikke’s success. You’re giving it too much credit by saying it’s the other things they did.
There are other games I know that have 6% SSR rates as a base and they go higher than that for special events. And more than 100 free summons not just on anniversaries but fairly often too. I never played any of the big ones so I was surprised at how bad the rates are. 4% to me is terrible. 0.6% is just insane.
These games have maybe 2% of nikke’s income despite the devs doing everything right that nikke’s do. Why? Because they’re not coomer bait.
You point out that other games also have scantily clad women and they don’t succeed as well. Firstly they didn’t have the impeccable marketing Nikke did. And secondly they didn’t do it like nikke did. They just did the usual hot women not wearing much. Nikke has jiggling butts in your face constantly.
I don’t hate Nikke but let’s be real everyone knows why it’s succeeded like it has. Star rail and genshin don’t cause the same neuron activation Nikke does that’s how they managed to carve out this niche. It’s a bit insulting to devs of smaller games that haven’t seen nearly as much success to say that they aren’t doing well like shift up mainly because they’re not being generous or communicative enough.

I started playing only recently at the start of January 2024 as someone who tended to avoid gacha. Yet despite being a F2P player, I've already managed to pull several top tier units. Sure I have my fair share of nothing from ten pulls, but the fact that I can consistently do ten pulls means I'm always working towards that next gold mold for a greater than coin flip chance at an SSR, or stocking up pity tickets for use later. It doesn't hurt that the game is actually fun to play too. The character design and interesting story are just a bonus on top after that.
