    Thank you very much Matt, you are my hero !!! My Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr1 autofocus broke down and now you give me the solution the Magadap !!
    I can also use it for my Irix 11mm f4, Irix 15mm f2.4, Samyang 85mm f1.5, Samyang 12mm f2.8 fisheye, and my old Nikon 50mm f1.2 non-autofocus lenses for my Z6 and Z7.
    All f-mount. You make me very happy. But this Speedmaster will certainly be in my camera bag this year!
    The Megadap is not available in the Netherlands, but Amazon and Alie express are available, but without the extra adapter for Leica to f-mount, let's see if that Megadap can also ship to the Netherlands.

      The 70-200 2.8 is a very heavy lens - considering that this adapter moves the lens foward and backward and you need to hold the zoom ring with one hand I wonder how that will work out? Maybe Matt can do a demonstration on a heavy F lens if he still has one around?

      Agree, full fast AF instead of something like Nikon F4 like performance, likely better IQ, I think the Z 50mm 1.8 is way more versatile and useful. I#ve tried a few AF-D lenses using the FTZ adapter, and lots of ppl seem to ask for an F-DTZ adapter with AF, but frankly speaking I wouldn#t buy one, even if AF speed is fast - these old lenses show their age in terms of IQ (or rather lack of), without pixel peeping even, so no thanks.

      It is an interesting proposition from a fine art perspective of photography. If the light gathering really is 0.95.
      But I am completely smitten by the 50mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.2, be interesting to see if we can get more light in real world usage ...

    • @marcusbraun8889
      @marcusbraun8889 3 года назад +2

      @@MattIrwinPhotography Yes, 0.95 can make for a very specialist use case, if done right. Now I'm sure you will do it right, but I've seen too many images (including my own when new to photography) where nothing was really in focus with such lenses, and if pointed out to the shooter 'but the bokeh is so beautiful' was often the answer. 'Character' is another similar point. I think proper focus, exposure, framing, DoF (done by the dude or dudette behind the lens) comes first, with bokeh/character (defined by the lens) thrown in as sprinkling on top.

    I have had that lens in a z mount for a few years. It s interesting, but optically not that great. It can be somewhat fun. Also while it is f0.95 it’s not t0.95, so not as low light as the noct or I suspect the f1.2 50mm. I really do like the feel and build quality. But really the Nikkor f1.2 is such a better lens. Interesting you are reviewing it today as I almost took it out again this weekend, but I just kept the 1.2 that I just love.

    Be careful there is a Z mount but it is only manual focus. To get auto focus you must order Leica M Mount with Megadap which makes it auto focus. The M mount priced higher at $799 vs Z mount at $659. so to get auto focus it is $799 plus $349 for Adaptor makes it $1148. still a lot cheaper than the Nikon lens

  • @barryobrien1890
    @barryobrien1890 3 года назад

    For those that don't like adapters, remember that adapter brings autofocus. Without the adapter -native z mount, it's a manual focus so good luck focusing at 0.95. The biggest complaint of the noct from Nikon is that it's almost impossible to get sharp focus without autofocus given the super shallow dog. I totally agree as the 50mm 1.2 is really hard to use without af turned on at 1.2. I would suggest trying the 50mm 1.2 before deciding on whether you want to use adapter or native z

    • @marcusbraun8889
      @marcusbraun8889 3 года назад +1

      Indeed, I've shot a AF-D 300mm at close distance, hence very little DoF, and focus has to be spot on, the 45mp of the z7 are unforgiving. Using the zoom function of the EVF and focus peaking allows for accurate focus, but hey, if whatever you shoot moves just moderately you're going to be as busy as the famous one-legged man in a butt kicking contest...

      @@eshanhalapanavar6774 Both lenses are Leica M manual lenses, both similar in built quality and both are working with Megadap just the same. But TTartisan has two surfaices ASPHerical element in it, which probably a reason for better performance with fully open aperture - less aberrations. Also aperture is more round trough all stops thankfully to old style 14 straight blades iris, with both ends anchored. Optical design on both lenses is similar, double Gauss with speed booster after it, so no much difference in rendering when stopped down. I sold my Speed Master and keep TTartisan now for this reason. Any way both lenses are attractive only for f0.95, if you want better performance and rendering with less speed, the Cosina Voightlander 50mm f1.2 asph is just amazing. I found myself keeping TT artisan 0.95 most of the time on the shelf, and Voightlander all the time on my Megadap.

      I think it moves the mount back and forth indeed. I think a Z 50mm 1.8 is much more useful for the cash. All those adapters and manual focus lenses remind me of the fisheyes. Fun little toy to use for a while, then ends up in the corner, never being used anymore, simply because it's not a workhorse.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography

      Yes as Marcus says this is brought into focus by physically moving the lens in and out, there are no further optics in the adapter. Think something like this could be more effective today, but then as said it's questionable how useful it really is overall. I'm prefer spending more bucks on one more versatile lens than on adapters, manual lenses, etc. At the end there#s just too much stuff in the bag with limited use, and the price adds up. But then that's just me, others are different, and having choice is great.

    Looking forward to Matt's images using this lens. By coincidence I have just seen a few shots taken with this lens, and the bokeh balls were...ugly. Sometimes folks talk about 'onion skin' but what I saw was more of a grapefruit skin, topped off with a bright dot in the center. I searched a bit online, found a review (linked below) and it seems the image I saw had the effect multiplied, likely caused by aggressive global sharpening/clarity/structure editing of the image (instead of limiting such processing to the in focus foreground). Sharpness is another story, but hey, look here:
    phillipreeve.net/blog/review-zhong-yi-mitakon-50mm-0-95-iii/
    While it's inexpensive compared to the Z 1.2 it still is a good junk of money for a very 'specialist' lens, in particular if the adapter is calculated as well.
