  • Why and How I use Zotero for Academic Writing | comparison with EndNote + Mendeley #Zotero #CrossRef (Long Title)
    A Reference Manager is another essential tool for a Ph.D. study and an important part of every dissertation.
    Endnote, Mendeley, and Zotero are the most popular choices.
    This video will be helpful to new Ph.D. students to learn they could avoid plagiarism, manage citations in a more streamlined manner.
    I make an emphasis on why I personally changed from using Endnote to Zotero. Endnote has a major speed limitation when handling a large library (1000+ references).
    If you are an advanced researcher, the last few sections would give some perspective on how you could easily change to a reference manager that suits you.

      Remember, you can always export your library into BibTex format from Zotero and import again to Endnote (or Mendeley) in case your future University/Employer has a strong preference :)

    The ability to add rich text to titles was introduced back in 2012:

      Thank you for the feedback, this is an older video so my video editing sense was still developing. I also have mixed feedback on this. There are suggestions that I should keep my video organized by chapter so it is easier to browse with a timestamp, but I understand if someone wants to watch the whole video in one go it could be distracting.
      Be assured that I have made the transitioning scene shorter and less frequent in my recent videos. Anyways, I hope you will find my other writing tip videos helpful. Good luck with your research!

      @@PhDCoffeeTime I couldn't express myself correctly. I loved that three-second pause. You said you had to wait three seconds for a reference to show in the document. People would think "just 3? No big deal" But you added that pause, it became very clear that waiting that much every time would be annoying as hell.
      I was watching the video in 2x, I reduced back to 1x and showed it to my wife because it was clever. And we laughed

    • @PhDCoffeeTime
      @PhDCoffeeTime  3 года назад +1

      Hi Sam, Thanks for your question!
      Personally, I never attach documents in Zotero because in my past experience with Endnote attachments can slow down the speed of in-text citation. I have a file naming system that helps me locate the PDF and supplementary files easily (This video: ruclips.net/video/77-SPK8PexY/видео.html), e.g. Chan_2016_method_paper.pdf
      However, if you want to learn more about attaching files in Zotero, they have the instructions here: www.zotero.org/support/attaching_files

    What type of reference style that is good for helping the writing more easily? I mean the author followed by the publication time right?

    • @PhDCoffeeTime
      @PhDCoffeeTime  3 года назад +2

      I use Author-date because it is easier to check if I am cite the right paper. With Zotero, changing the reference style is simple, so I only do so at very last stage before submitting the paper.

    Thank you for this video! I just started my PhD, and was wondering: do you also use this to store the original papers, or do you have them set up elsewhere? I'm trying to organise my readings into many different folders, but this structure doesn't automatically copy to zotero

    • @PhDCoffeeTime
      @PhDCoffeeTime  3 года назад

      I have talked about my cross-referencing system with this OneNote video.
      ruclips.net/video/wJJIUhmmTnQ/видео.html
      I don't store the PDFs on Zotero simply because the free Zotero comes with a size limit. I've extrapolated from the past experience with Endnote that uploading PDFs could slow down the cite-while-you-write function.
      I simply save the PDF with FirstAuthorName_Date_Keyword1_Keyword2_Keyword3.pdf format. You could check out this File Organization video: ruclips.net/video/77-SPK8PexY/видео.html

    • @thntk

      A Zotero user here, you can and should store the pdf files in Zotero, creating folder/subfolder in Zotero as you like. For syncing, metadata syncing (everything except files) is free. Files syncing is limited, but Zotero lets you choose to sync the files or not. You can also buy the file syncing quota to encourage the Zotero devs to invest more in making new features, mobile apps, etc.
