Great Video! Makes a job a lot easier when you can see just exactly what tools, parts and methods you'll use beforehand so you can plan the job. A good plan is the difference between "Got it done" and "I'll finish it later." So Thanks!
I just did my 96 Infiniti, it's the same as your Nissan Maxima. The front lock bolt would have been easier with an offset 12mm. I was struggling with a regular wrench. I have a set of ratcheting wrenches. I have a offset 14mm and it would have been nice if I had a 12mm. That back lock bolt behind the ps pump was tight as I've ever seen it!!! WOW If anyone can change these belts out, they are great!!! Thanks to your video I didn't give up. Your video was my driving force to keep going. Thanks!!!
Great video! I'll try to do it myself on my 2001 maxima next week. I hope I can do it in 1 day or less without any major problem. Thanks a lot and God bless!
The best thing I can recommend is getting your hands on the factory repair manual. Ebay has an electronic (pdf) version for $7. You can also try a Haynes or Chilton repair manual.
Excelent excellent video!! Haynes manual was worthless. Really appreciate people that do these things. You saved me a ton of work just figuring out how to get to this silly thing! Thanks again and God bless you!
The belt tensioner bolt was broken off on this Nissan Quest. The last owner didn't even have the Spark plugs tightened down. When we got the vehicle, I noticed the power steering belt kept squeaking every time I turned the corner. The belt was not even tight. I found various other issues as well including the two bolts missing on the intake plenum. I hate working on a vehicle someone else worked on and screwed up.
Thank you for the video Sir. I just did a 1997 Maxima using it for reference. I removed the high and low lines from the pump and when done just started the car and turned the wheels while on the ground to bleed the system, seemed to work fine that way.
Great video, My 02 maxima hose is leaking. Hopefully I can use your info to fix or replace it. Thanks from a 60 year old woman, yea we can still work on cars.
You probably could but it will make the job a lot harder. It's easier to access the jam nut from underneath the car. I loosened the jam nut from on top because it was easier to film. Give it another try with an adjustable wrench and you should be successful.
You're a freaking genius man. Thanks for sharing this. I gotta a power steering leak somewhere, i'm sure this video will come in handy. Going to my favorites :)
You can still remove the pump from the vehicle. Once you remove the 14mm on the back of the pump, you'll have two front bolts to remove. Then slide the pump out. Inspect the adjusting nut and verify it's seated and working correctly....You can often quality mechanic tool sets on sale. Stick with known brands such as Craftsman. Hope this helps.
I replaced the power steering pump on my 97 maxima and it leaks around the suction pipe where it meets the pump itself? It has the o ring in it, any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just did this job. The key to this job is to get under the car and put your hand into the back of the power steering pump. You also need to use your left hand to hold the power steering pump up in the front. I don't think many people have an old car like this. I still have one and I love it. The way to put the screw into the adjusting area is very tricky. You have to use two fingers. This is the hardest job I've ever done with parts on a car. If anyone can do this job they are a Master Mechanic. You have to adjust the adjusting bolt and mechanism to fit the hole. It's a chess game in action to do this job. It's all easy after you figure it out. This job is the job that says it all.
Are you the same guy that left a comment on this video 10 years ago? Congrats on successfully completing the job twice. I made a big mistake not taking the pulley off before removing the pump. It doesn't seem possible to remove without the pulley off. I have everything else disconnected but I really wish I had taken the pulley off when the pump was still bolted on.
Good video. alittle hard to get oriented sometimes when filming up under the engine but could barely makout the manifold and axle shaft and frame rail which helped
Yes. Take another look at the video. At 7:05 into the video I explain and show you need a 12mm wrench to loosen the locking nut before you can back off the belt tensioner.
Code 1447 is strictly used for emission purposes only. It wouldn't cause a slow crank. Are you sure the battery has enough voltage? If you have a multimeter, test the battery for at least 12v when the vehicle is off. You can also go to your local auto part supplier and they'll test your battery for free. Also check battery voltage once the car is running. Check my alternator video for instructions. It's an easy test. Let me know what turns up.
Excellent video and editing! I must have watched this video eight times. CarsNToys has used an offset box wrench to remove the pinion bolt on the pump. It did not work for me. I had to use a 3/8 In. Flex Head Teardrop Ratchet with 14 mm 12 pt socket. It was very painful to complete this job. Next time I will buy a Chevy.

+Addison Morgan III Yea, the working area is very tight. Just take your time and you'll get the pump back onto the bracket. Regarding bleeding, just turn the wheel left to right a bunch of times as I show at the end of the video.
Great video! I have a question about the bleeding procedure. Does it matter if the cap to the fluid reservoir is on or off? Seems like if it was on and tightened, that wouldn't allow the trapped air to escape.

great video. i have a leak coming from the bottom of the return line on my 98 maxima. i tried using a different clamp but still leaking. is the hose called a 3/8" Power Steering Return Hose or Power Steering Reservoir Line Hose. do you know what size hose will fit the reservoir? thanks.
looks like the 3/8" tube is used for the smaller bottom plug of the reservoir. the one leading down to the pump is much bigger and is called a Power Steering Suction Hose part #49717-31U10 cost $75.
Ii took off the bolt and washer off the pulley but it seams the pulley is not coming off so easily. Is that something that i will just have to kinda pry off'?
How did you reset the tension on the drive belt and PS belt? I have a MAJOR squealing sound off brand new belt and I think that the tension is too high, too low or maybe the A/C pulley is sticking?
I've got the new pump hooked up to the hoses. I'm having trouble getting it lined up with its bracket so that I can put the bolt through that holds it in place. There seems to be a spacer on the front side of the back bracket, which is making it slightly off. Do you have any suggestions?
My guess is the hoses are making it difficult to line up with the mounting point. Remove the hoses from the PS pump. It makes the job much easier. ( I also removed the PS pulley) Bolt the PS steering in place. Then go ahead and reinstall the hoses. Trust me, it makes the job a lot easier.
Great video. I'm having a repeated knocking sound when I start my 95 maxima after long periods of time. It stops when I put it in drive. My power steering cooling line busted in an accident awhile back ago and has since been replaced but I still get the knocking sound. My mechanic guy says it the result of the power steering pump not having the fluid to feed off of. What I want to know is, is it my power steering pump that is causing this knocking noise?
hello. the jamnut on my pulley tensiner is striped. i was wondering if you could do this job without removing the altnator and compressor belt? if you could just losen the power steering belt and remove the pump? thanks in advance
You refer to a single bolt or to two bolts in the video that will allow the PS pump to disconnected. What are those bolts connected to, I'm just replacing to pump and not the tensioner. I have already removed the one from the back and disconnected the hoses...
The one bolt holds the tensioner to the power steering pump. The two bolts holds the tensioner bracket to the engine block. I like to remove the two bolts. I think it makes the job a little easier.
but can i use this video for the process tho and if not are there any videos you could reccomend for the 93 altima because it doesnt have one on youtube
. I did change the sensor for the camshaft 1 and 2 and still doing the same problem staying stuck on first gear does not want to move first gear and it's helped Nissan Maxima automatic
+Carlos Vazquez I can obtain the correct work procedure from Nissan, but it's extensive. I'm not sure how much you want to look into this on your own before you bring to a shop. Regardless, if you're interested shoot me an email at carsntoys@gmail.com
Hello, I have a 1999 Maxima. Is there also a locking nut on the back side of the front locking nut to loosen the power steering tensioner? I can not get the power steering tensioner to loosen to replace the belt. Thanks
Remember the tensioner bolt is reverse threads. You have to turn the bolt clockwise to loosen the belt. If this isn't working, you can also remove the bracket holding the tensioner belt.

My mechanic guy says it the result of the power steering pump not having the fluid to feed off of. What I want to know is, is it my power steering pump that is causing this knocking noise?
I doubt it!!
Thank You
Chico Deon Glad to help man
It runs from the reservoir to the pump
hello. the jamnut on my pulley tensiner is striped. i was wondering if you could do this job without removing the altnator and compressor belt? if you could just losen the power steering belt and remove the pump? thanks in advance
I think it makes the job a little easier.
have question u think is the same proces in 2005 máxima
great bro
but can i use this video for the process tho and if not are there any videos you could reccomend for the 93 altima because it doesnt have one on youtube

+Carlos Vazquez Shoot me an email with the year of your vehicle and the specific trouble codes you're getting
2005
+Carlos Vazquez Okay. Let me see what I can dig up and I'll f/u shortly.
With the Ps pump belt replacement do I need to loosen the bolt that’s behind the ps pump
