Every day dozens of people walk through the front door of 732 Butternut street on Syracuse’s north side. They think they are attending a traditional Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, but The Syracuse Group is something vastly different. They offer a hardcore controlling brand of sobriety that looks down on outside help and medication.
The Syracuse Group, also known as The Butternutters, has operated below the radar for decades in the unregulated world of self-help groups. The only requirement to call yourself AA is two people with a desire to stop drinking.
No government agency, at any level, regulates this group’s actions or methods.
Syracuse.com reporters have conducted a year-long investigation and interviewed more than 50 people about the group’s practices. They reviewed 20 hours of publicly available audio recordings of Syracuse Group meetings.
Several former group members agreed to tell us about their experience in this four-part series by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

"They leave thinking 'I tried AA and it didn't work. So what choice do I have?' and go back to drinking"
Thankfully in 2019, they have many choices. Hopefully folks will become more and more aware of this as more options means better outcomes.

That a fraud type of a statement. Some people get sober and stay sober and leave AA becuase it is nothing but a pub without alcohol. Some get sober to set real life goals. AA is not meant to live in. Just becuase a person doesn't attend meetings doesn't mean their drinking. They were smart enough not to believe in a old program or some of it people who try to compete against other members sobriety.

If it wasn't for a group like the Syracuse Group, I would be drunk. There is a spirit of love and patience that I have never experienced elsewhere. I will continue to be a part of a group that has dedicated itself to saving lives.

A very one sided saga on a group that saved my life. The people at this group have a love and dedication to AA that is amazing. It's sad that a few resentments could cause such an inaccurate representation of such a wonderful place.

I do believe this could have been one show, not a 4 part series. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Good for you for speaking out about this group ! They need to be shut down and arrested for playing Doctor. Who owns the building - sue them -

I completely agree with you, Monica. And I'm an AA member with 11 years sober

Agree 100%. If lawsuits ever start coming, maybe they'll think twice about this type of behavior.

Agreed. I moved away from Syracuse in 2010. I actually shocked that group still exists. At the very least, Tully Hill (a rehab in the vicinity) should not allow Butternut members to prey on their patients

This is the sad side of AA. There are sick groups out there and if you are new you do not know any better. I started AA in a sick group and was lucky that a visitor saw that I was dying and stepped in and helped me. I have been sober 31 years and I am a member of AA. The big book tells people to make use of doctors. Responsible AA members need to visit other groups more and look for groups like this and help stop this.
