    Hello Friends, Hope you're having a lovely day and great sends! Want to see more Beta Comparisons?
    Much love to Max for helping me with this video ;)

      Definitely want to see more. Just wanted to suggest using the same exact camera angle/position for these vids so there's less time translating between the two shots and more time directly comparing beta for the viewer. Thanks for what you do!

      Very interesting, I think it's one of the more common things that my friends complained about when we first started, it's so much easier if you're tall! I think one or two more like this would be useful.

    I love this! I am 6'2" 339lbs and talking betas with my friends is always frustrating because our betas tend to be drastically different because I have a much longer reach then they do. it was interesting to be able to see this from the outside. Great vid!

      Yeah, I didn't really notice at the time how much of a difference when we climbed (max and I) and when I started editing... I was like, oh... ok there is a huge difference! Also, At first I thought he was going to have difficulties at the start but nope, he worked around the problem and started high.
      Thank you!

    I’m 6’5” and 187 pounds , 1m95 and 85 kg for the euros ( Belgian viewer myself and climbing 6a to 6c ) and my experience on climbing as a tall person is that i struggle on crunched positions, crimps and balance but far reaches ,dynamic moves and mantles are easier . Kinda obvious maybe but hey all that matters is reaching the next hold 😁😁😁
    Thanx for all the tips and vids , keep it up ❤️

    Love the "markings" you make.
    Realy like it when you compare styles next to each other, like this vid and e.g. the one with geek climber.
    Must be difficult for routesetters to make a good route for both shorter and taller people. Where i climb there are guys 7+ feet tall and -5 feet tall kids, realy cool to see that they both can solve the problems.

    • @rockentry
      @rockentry  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I agree with you. Doing this and watching this really let's you know how difficult it must be for route setters to create a problem that would work for different body types AND to make it enjoyable too... Much respect to the setters indeed. Glad you liked it my friend, Thank you!

  • @jd2722
    @jd2722 5 лет назад +6

    Good vid, but...You find it surprising that he climbs very similar to you, given the body type difference. On a straightforward V3. I would like to see the comparison between you guys on a higher graded problem (like V6 - V9) because that’s when personal beta really starts to come out, given the trickiness and difficulty of certain moves that favors certain styles climbers developed over years. My bet is you guys would climb quite differently.

    Yeah definitely want more!
    I am just shy of 5'10" and have my weight down to just under 210. I climb with some pretty strong climbers but they weigh about 155. The one guy does a lot of free solo climbs and has free soloed up to 5.12c. He has been climbing for a long time but I want to see what it would be like for him if he had another 50+ lbs on him. His strength and technique are great and I am sure he could still out climb me as I have been doing this for just over a year and only the last 8 months or so have I been able to climb twice a week.
    It's nice to see a heavier guy climb and what is possible and how they do it.

    • @rockentry
      @rockentry  5 лет назад +1

      I really like the Idea of climbing with a 50+ lb vest on. I have a feeling my climb would change based on how I need to work with the added weight or maybe not. Now I'm curious myself lol Thanks for the suggestion!

    This is amazing! Me and my uncle are bigger guys, me being 5. 11 and 230 and my uncle being 6. 3 and 250. We look around and always see slim people only rock climbing, it makes me believe that I have to lose weight (which isn't a bad thing) but I loved watching this because it highlights heavier set climbers. I would love to see more comparisons please!

    This is a great comparison! I’m 6’7” 225ish….I’m a fairly new climber, but really starting to get the hang of it and of course my height has an advantage in a lot of places, but not some much in others…..especially on the starts on a slopey bouldering wall or a boulder that smashed into a corner. Found your channel through Magnus, you guys definitely need to collab again!

    I would love to see more videos like this. I'm 5ft 10 and climb with a 6ft 3 friend. He can complete more climbs than me. He always dismisses it saying, "I cheated. I'm tall." I know that it is to do with body type and the fact that I often need to do more moves to get to the same place. It was so interesting to see this in your video. There are times when I have the advantage because he gets too scrunched up on the wall with foot and handholds too close together for him. It would be great to see how Max deals with those kinds of situations. Thanks.

  • @krks0101

    I do find this video helpful, cause I am 6 foot 5 and I notice that most routes are not concipated for tall ppl. I have no trouble reaching the grips, but the steps I often cannot reach. Therefore I found this helpful, cause I can see that Max keeps close to the wall despite his height and can do a low start standing by keeping his weight above the steps. More please!

    Great positive and constructive comparison. Really cool that both of you had an efficient flow. Another aspect is each climber's "range" of reach? Evident by height in this video, but have seen shorter climbers have absurd range despite taller climbers stayed closer.

    • @rockentry
      @rockentry  5 лет назад

      Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. I find it impressive when I see a short climbers reach a hold which seems not possible. It's the way they twist hips in and fully extent ( takes a lot of control and tension ) that works for them and also Ape index has a huge part as well.

  • @cinerati0n
    @cinerati0n 2 года назад

    While there is no correct or incorrect beta, there is usually a "more efficient" way of climbing something, even if you're comfortable doing it a certain way. The best example is the difference in how you two start that route. As someone who used to be in very good shape, I would usually stay low on my starts and muscle my way up or use dynamic movements with little regard for efficiency. Having been out of shape and getting back into climbing it is almost always more efficient for me to get my hips into the wall and start from a position where most of my weight is on my feet, if at all possible (obv not always a possibility). Hips close to the wall on vertical, slight overhang, and slab walls almost always makes things easier and more efficient, which allows me to save my energy for the parts of the climb that require it. It also saves my fingers from getting torn up. Getting back into climbing while out of shape has really shown me the value of technique and balance, and once I'm back to strength I think it's going to pay off

    Useful comparison! I would really like to see a video about when dynamic moves come into play, and how to know. Some climbers I saw can do some moves quite slowly and methodically, while I don't have the strength to go that slowly and have to go for a dynamic move. I would like to see a video where maybe one can send the problem statically, but someone else has good reason to use a more dynamic approach :)

    Do find that some gyms grade their climbs a lot higher than others? That climb would be graded a V1 or V2 max at the gym I frequent.
    Just very curious, because I've been climbing some really tough overhanging V3s and then I go out to the crag and knock out some V5 and V6 routes.
    My only weaknesses are my weight and really small crimps, but I'm working on both.

      Some bodytype are made for some sports:
      -Strongman for big guys
      -street workout and gymnastic for small guys...
      this won't mean you can't have fun practicing anyway if you don't match the stereotype, but you will struggle more and underperform for the same effort.
      climbing is definnatly for thin persons, and I'll really enjoy an interview of max about his journey!

      Yeah, some body types do have their strengths and weaknesses depending on the sport and body type as you mentioned.
      But, Your last sentence says It all. You will struggle more than others BUT can still have FUN! The endgame for me in this sport is to enjoy it. I myself used to say I wish I started climbing earlier but I started climbing at 30yrs old. Now Instead of treating it as a weakness I see it as a challenge, How strong can my body get at this age? and how much more can it take? It's harder to progress but I'll take that as a challenge and enjoy the progress that I can make.

      Yeah it is all about having fun.
      When I can do a climb that a much lighter person or younger person can't do I feel real good about myself and my progress along with bodybuilder types that are real lean and strong. I am happy with my progress. I started at 39 in good shape by a lot of people's standards and struggled with 5.7 5.8 climbs and pumping out. Now I dropped about 10lbs and those climbs are nothing anymore. No pumping out. I can lap those like nothing and I have climbed almost a dozen 5.11- routes. When I started, the first 8-10 months I was lucky to get in once a week let alone once a month over the summer. This last winter was slow for me and I started to climb twice a week and I really progressed then. Your channel was a big part of that too. Breaking things down and tweaking things to send.

    What about beginner vs advanced climber in the same route?

    • @rockentry
      @rockentry  5 лет назад

      This one would feel uncomfortable for me to make as I feel like I'm displaying how good one climber over the other and I wouldn't wanna be that climber :/ Maybe just have to be creative with it, we'll see. Hopefully in the future I can probably compare myself with a PRO climber's beta? Thanks for the suggestion tho!

    • @neo778
      @neo778 5 лет назад

      Of course this should be in a kind way. Or you teach someone „at the end of the comfort zone“ (which everyone is at a certain level) a better beta.

    • @jlweck231978
      @jlweck231978 5 лет назад +1

      You are a good guy. I think if you found a beginner to compare yourself too they should not feel lime you are showing off or anything like that. Some people would be butt hurt but there are plenty of people like me who know what kind of a climber we are and that there are tons of people better than me. If I have the chance to work with someone better than me who will take the time to help me progress I would be happy and take that opportunity to grow. I got better by watching and learning and taking advice. I got better by watching your channel and learning too. Find the right guy or girl. I think it would be great. All the little differences that end up making a big difference.

      I always appreciate tips from more advanced climbers at my gym, it's a good way to learn. Everyone I have asked for help has been forthcoming.
      I do like to work out the bata myself so only watch people on it if really struggling. Have never felt put down as a beginner. Would never expect to be as good as someone bouldering for years when I only have 1yrs experience.

      I've seen him climb V5's like nothing but I wouldn't be surprise if he climbed higher grades to be honest. We just climbed fun problems during this video and didn't really check grades. Thats awesome that you can relate to him in this video! very similar you two.

    What the V means? I saw in videos and some photos, v1, v2, v3, v... What does the V means? It's a route that the climber must follow?

    • @thelegion05
      @thelegion05 5 лет назад

      Its is a rating system 0 being the easiest. V is the initial of the guy who made the system.

  • @TheUnknownFactor

    No you're not in the same position. The leg he's actually standing on is extended ufrther than the one you're standing on. You say you're both fully extended as though the dangling leg makes any difference for your reach.

    • @rockentry
      @rockentry  5 лет назад +1

      I'd have to disagree and heres why:
      1. Yes, We are in the same body position. We're both in the same position having our center of gravity above our left foothold to release weight from our hands, my overall point. both right foot are used to stabilize ourself, I'm using the wall and he is using a foot chip.
      2. Dangling leg? Look closely, seriously. Notice that any pressure you add to the wall ( in this case my right foot ) 4:05 makes a huge difference. It's not dangling it's actually very important and really adds to the reach, you might not think that but... trust me I was up there. And max is using a foot chip on his right foot and yes he is using it to fully extend himself.
      If I'm missing something please feel free to clarify.

  • @TheValinov
    @TheValinov 5 лет назад +2

    show us some overhang or roof climbing comparison where reach doesnt but only weight matters.

    • @jlweck231978
      @jlweck231978 5 лет назад

      Yeah that is where my weight really makes a difference. When I'm on slab it's not bad. But when I am really overhung that is when things really change. Decent holds turn to crap and get pumped out quick. Especially lead climbing and having to clip when overhung and hanging on by one hand.

    I’m new to all this...what do you mean by Beta?

    • @jlweck231978
      @jlweck231978 5 лет назад +1

      Beta is another word for data or information on a route. I had to look up a lot of the wording too when I was new. Just over a year and i am still not fluent on everything yet.

    • @rockentry
      @rockentry  5 лет назад +1

      Beta: Information about a climb. How to climb it, moves used on the climb, duration of the climb, the crux (most difficult part of the climb) etc...
