  • This superb American built 1989 ATK 250 MX is another machine from the Andrew Craig collection. These were very innovative machines in their day with that radical rear disc brake bolted onto the primary sprocket and the unusual "Anti Tension Kettenantrieb" final chain drive system which gave ATK their company name.

I wanted an ATK very much back then. I had an RMX 250. Many GNCC guys in my region had an ATK. I never lost my love for air cooled 2 strokes!

I've been riding motorcycles since I was 5 years old. I have owned at least 30 different type of motorcycles in my life. CR500 kx500. And a lot of the 450 dirt bikes. The ATK 406 is one of the fastest 2-stroke dirt bikes I've ever rode. They were ahead of their time.

Marco Ceccarelli the 406 atk vibrated like a Harley. I owned a 406 in 92. The forks were harsh, the rear end did not track well at all. The engine had a light switch power band, terrible enduro engine. Worst bike I ever owned. I have had 20+ new European and Japanese Mx and enduro bikes, the atk 406 was by far the worst. I quickly sold this and bought a 93 Husqvarna wxe 250 enduro that was light years better.

I have that motor but it's liquid cooled mine came out of mini sprint car .I reserched it and found that it was out of a 1986 CAN-AM MX 250 L/C , the motor that I have was modified, with the exhaust comes out of the back of the cylinder, and has the intake manifold on the side of the motor directly into the rotory disk ,long story short ,the ATK seemed to be better bike, the CAN-AM , the main thing for me is that motor is very unique and powerful, I plan on building finding a good dirt bike for that motor for a Frankenstein build !!!
Thank's for letting me ramble on,
    THANX FROM NOR-CAL!!!!

I owned one of these new. Good bike. Light weight, torquey motor, good handling. I raced it in NETRA (New England Trail Riders) hare scrambles.

I always wanted a go on one of these. The most attractive feature of this bike is it's light weight. 205 lbs. Wow. I also love the sensible simplicity of the rear shock, it's placement and accessibility. I heard those countershaft mounted rear discs would overheat a bit but I do like the loss of unsprung weight on the rear wheel and the clean look of the entire rear wheel assembly. The air filter being tucked up high would be good for those muddy days or high water crossings. I know that Rotax motor would be no slouch either. The whole thing just looks right.

👍👍 video. Back in 89 my buddy bought one of these. I had an 89 CR250. We would swap bikes occasionally when out in the Southern California desert.
Those were awful slow. Literally no powerband. It would just roll through the revs with no hit ever and just vibration. Really weird motor. Though light, the suspension was awful and made it hard to make up for the lack of motor in speed. Brakes had no feel and the countershaft rotor was a silly design as it would overheat in the technical stuff.
It was an overpriced, niche bike for riders who liked simplicity. It was an oddball putt around bike, but no one competitive would run one.

Thanks for showing these fantastic bikes, i'm fairly new to watching your channel, i started racing on a Maico 400 in 1978 through to 1987 so can relate to what i thought was such a fast period of design in dirt bikes. i loved the look at that Montesa cappra 125 you did, i nearly bought a 78 cappra 360 vb but decided on the Maico, keep up the great work. Thanks Pat nice to get some positive feedback for a change . . the way I present my video's is not to everybody's liking and I still get a lot of grief but thankfully more positive than negative. Thanks for your kind comments.

The atk is one of the ugliest bikes I've seen, yet I wish there were more around.

Hello, All, I could not resist in replying to everyone’s comments regarding a 1888/89 ATJ 250. I was fortunate enough to purchase my ATK 250 NEW back in 1988. I have run it off and on over the years and it has performed great ! I guess I feel younger than I really am (I am going to be 60 years old this August). I hate to say this but maybe I should let her go. Would anyone be interested in purchasing the bike ? Let me know. Bob
