Very nice! Saw it during livestream Fri pm and it looked incredible, glad you posted a how to as well. Well done! I haven't had the guts to try something like this but you did give me inspiration for future.
I found your channel by accident and can’t stop watching. I have been in the hobby since I was young but you are the only one who has been a great wealth of kno
The backdrop is looking great! The thing to remember is that it should be somewhat vague or impressionistic. You don't want a lot or detail to draw your eyes away from the trains, so I think you are doing fine. I vote for no snow or even trees at this point. Well maybe a few vague tree shapes if you so desire!
When the train appears in front of the mountains and breaks the line of the benchwork, you suddenly get the distance perspective of the backdrop. Looks really good.
I think it looks good. The best way to approach the painting of the trees would be to do a little at the time. This way you're not overwhelmed with doing it all at once. This gives an opportunity to do other things in the meantime.
For the record.... for a first attempt, you actually did a great job!. When I tried to paint a back drop my first time, it turned out looking like Pablo Picasso vomited foul graffiti ,lol. Again, great job!.
I was thinking the same thing about the first two layers. The third layer needs to be darker with more of a green tint to it to make the whole scene pop, but it's a great start and looks great for a first attempt.
Hey there Dave! I'm excited about this revamp of your layout! If you need a custom feature for your new station area, let me know. I'd be happy to design and print a piece for you as a "layout warming" gift. Let me know!
Decent first attempt indeed Dave, I'd leave it for now, maybe go back to it in a few days or so. Maybe practice on a piece of wood first to get feel for trees, if you want to have them or not. All the best.
Forget the trees, as others have said the trains are the focus. As a photographer I would find a nice spot on the HWY and take several overlapping photos, have posters made and use them for backdrop. Of couse this depends on where your railroad is suposed to be located.
Trail and error....or for me...error and error :) I like the idea, the mountains look good! The trees, those have always been something that scare me. I saw Tom Lunds technique years ago. Looked really good, but a pain in the backside
To me it looks like they are to far away to see trees as details. It looks really good . If you did do trees just very small ones those Mt look to be 50 miles away
Art is hard lol.. ..soooo I cheated.....I went to like a value village store and bought a bunch of old national geographic and looked for a bunch of pictures of mountains and hills with villages where the buildings are say n scale or smaller and made like a giant collage then sprayed with a clear matt coat and hey it works....I will say you are definitely on the right track with silhouettes they look awesome
So your not going to be an artist any time soon ?? You also need longer arms.. hahahhaaa.. it is a pity that the green final layer isn't darker and I would not do any trees or try on another piece of wood to perfect your tree designs.. overall it looks great.

Thank you very much.
Watching paint dry was exactly what I needed today, thank you!
lol
Misty Mountain Hop? Great feeling of wide open spaces. Your train room just got a lot bigger. Excellent!

I will have actual trees beside the tracks, so I think it will be fine.
@@ScottRails I think you're correct! It should work perfectly.🚅🙂

I'll be trying lots of different camera angles on tonight's live stream.
looks good Dave (Bob Ross Jr) lol
Bob Ross had better hair.
Yes trees
Duuuuude! Those 1st 2 layers look sublime! The last layer is a bit hard to see, but it all looks freaking great!

Great idea, thanks.
Hee Haw! Great 👍 colors
Thanks Charles
looking good Dave.. the backdrop adds some depth to the layout.
Thanks John. I'm very pleased with it.
Looks great Dave. Very nice
Thanks James.
Just leave it the way it is,,,,,,it looks awesome the way it is Scott
Thank you very much Ken.
Very cool element, Dave! It pops well in the nighttime shots, and it will really pop as you add scenics to the table.
Thanks Anthony. Going to add some temp scenery for tonights stream.
Love it.
Thanks Brian, me too.
vote for as is, it looks good
Thanks Jack.
try using a sea sponge to make your trees. You just stab it on to give a hint of leaves. With a little practice they turn out pretty good
Bob Ross style (happy little trees!)
Thanks Joe.
Don’t look half bad Dave nice. Job buddy
Thanks Peter.
Looks really good Dave.
Thanks Steve. Just need to keep practising.
Looks fantastic keep doing the work it looks great
Thanks bud.

Thanks Rebel. I surprised myself, lol.
You are done so axe the trees and sell them for Christmas. Looks great and less filling. Jersey Bill
I can fill my gondolas with trees now.
Did I miss a video about the new lighting?
Yes
@ found it, thanks!
I think I like the two layers , not sure about the third layer, but looks great

I ran out of dark green paint, lol.

Thanks Brian. I'll add some real trees next to the tracks and see if I actually need to paint any.

I think I'm going for a Canadian Rockies feel, obviously, lol. The layout is not really big enough to have multiple scenes.
Don't do anything more! That 3 color background looks great and when I build my next layout I'll use the exact same technique. Cheers from eastern TN

It's just the angle for painting is really awkward, otherwise I would have painted the trees already. I'm fine without them.
You are having tooo much fun ... lol. I would say no to trees
If it's not fun, we're doing it wrong.
@@ScottRails 😂
Overall not a bad job you'll getting people asking you to do it for them next.
great job but you should have painted your top supports blue to
You won't see them during normal operation. I might add a ceiling, but lets see how it goes.
Do it the way you want to do it that's how I would do it
Nice, however the Yetistone orogeny must be fairly recent as the mountain peaks show little erosion.
Yes, a mere 2 million years old.
snow peaks highest mountains only
Yes but to highlight a great distance the snow on the peaks the white color of the snow needs to be muted.
To me it looks like they are to far away to see trees as details. It looks really good . If you did do trees just very small ones those Mt look to be 50 miles away
Yes, I agree. Maybe just do a fuzzy edge at the top of the middle layer.
The last layer isn't dark enough in my opinion, very hard to see. The first layers are awesome.
Art is hard lol..
