Finally some Blue Öyster Cult! Just a friendly warning, this band is very addictive! Some of their better known songs are Godzilla, Burnin For You and Cities On Flame With Rock and Roll. Some deeper cuts are I Love The Night, Are You Ready To Rock, Astronomy, E.T.I., and Veteran of the Psychic Wars. You guys are really going to love this band.
I'm for any and all of these live versions: "Cities on Flame" and "Subhuman" from 'On Your Feet or On Your Knees', "Astronomy", "E.T.I."., and "Godzilla"' from 'Some Enchanted Evening', "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", "Black Blade", and "Godzilla" (either version) from 'ETL', and "Perfect Water" from 'A Long Day's Night'. My recommendations are "Nosferatu", "The Great Sun Jester", and "The Vigil".
The " more cowbell" was an SNL skit with will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. They are in the recording studio recording this track Christopher Walken playing the producer with will on the cowbell
This is definitely one of the best rock songs ever recorded. It survived and thrived after being made into a joke, that's how good it is. And the joke only adds to the legacy. Lesser songs would have died.
I’m so glad this band won, I normally don’t listen to this type of music but I really like them. Another great song from them is “Burnin’ For You”. More of these types of polls please 😊.
According to Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, the lead guitarist, and lead vocalist on this song, he wrote it after getting a diagnosis of an irregular heartbeat. That had him thinking about his mortality and that he may have a shortened life. "I thought I was going to maybe not live that long", he said in an interview. He described it as "a love song where the love transcends the actual physical existence of the partners". It advocates courage in the face of death, but in no way suggests we should actively bring it about. It expressed his wish that should he die early, that he would be able to be with his loved ones again in the afterlife." - Songfacts
^ This. This song is sometimes "accused" of promoting suicide, but it is not. It is about accepting the inevitable when our time comes. Next by BOC should be "Godzilla," followed by "Cities on Flame,"
@@bostonvair I was fairly young when this came out (63 now). I have never ever once heard anyone say that this song encourages people to commit suicide. I mean maybe that was said but I never heard it said or even suggested. We always just thought it was a cool song. I saw them live with Sabbath. Needless to say it was awesome!
Romeo goes to the tomb and realises he can't live without Juliet. He takes the poison and dies next to her. Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo dead. She then kills herself with Romeo's dagger.
So easy to get lost in this song. It's one of those songs that is just a total ride. Masterpiece. It has to survive 100's of more years! Please do "Burnin' For You"
Blue Öyster Crank It Up! When you're ready for more from them, check out "Godzilla", "Burnin' For You", "Astronomy", "Cities On Flame with Rock and Roll", "Flaming Telepaths", "Unknown Tongue", "Joan Crawford", and "Deadline" along with many others. Good stuff!
Great song and fun reaction. To me the lyrics are about everlasting love and the afterlife, and how we should not fear death but accept it, and maybe even embrace it. Seasons come and go…. The cycle is eternal and inevitable.
No fuckin' way! My favorite tune from my favorite reactors?! I'm drunk and stoned and ready for bed, but I absolutely cannot miss this right now. I already know you're gonna dig it.
James Hetfield from Metallica talked about BOC in an interview some years ago. He mentioned that BOC played the biggest venues in the country in the late 70's / early 80's, but now they play smaller venues and large clubs. James wondered how a band can make that change from large venues to small venues. But then he said that he caught a recent BOC show and understood why: They love what they are doing. They love playing live in front of a crowd. The rock music industry is like professional baseball. Many people play in the minors, but only the lucky few get called up to the "big show". Everybody hopes to get that call, but if you decide that you will not be happy unless you get the call, there is a huge probability that you will be a very sad individual. A better existence is to work hard and hope to make it big, but be happy to get what you do get and just keep playing the game as long as the game wants you.
Best opening to a TV program ever. When all the COVID hysteria vegan in early 2020 I was walking out of a Walmart in rural S. Central Missouri. There was a crow perched on top of the railing of one of the shopping cart corrals. Just looking at everyone. People walked by never moved. I thought oh shit...
@@ericelander9936 I had a similar experience. I was sitting at my kitchen table many years ago getting effed up when a crow ( raven maybe?) sat on the railing on the fire escape right outside my window and stared at me. I had mt coat hanging off of the back of a chair a little too close to a space heater. The sleeve of the coat started to scorch. There could have been a fire if I hadn’t noticed. I think maybe it was trying to warn me.
When you said, "I've never heard this song." My first thought was "Yes you have, you just didn't know what it was." This song has been in many movies including the made-for-TV movie The Stand. I know it was in the original but I also think it was in the remake Paramount + did. Have you ever heard the songs "Love Hurts" and "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth? Both are amazing songs that I highly recommend.
Would absolutely FREAK if y'all reacted to the SNL skit the cowbell bit relates to!! So hysterical, Jimmy was still new & couldn't keep a straight face!
Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken on an SNL performance will forever be associated with this song. Watched the video a thousand times and could watch it a thousand more.
Hahahaha it's funny that you mentioned Ghost because a few years ago a friend of mine got mad at me because he was really excited about showing me this new band he liked called Ghost and after he showed me a couple of songs and he asked me what I thought I told him that I liked them better when they were called Blue Oyster Cult.
I have a fever, and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL! Y'all need to react to the SNL sketch. It's great. Lol. Great reaction as always y'all. ♥ Also, as an aside, do y'all think y'all are ready for Inna Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly? Lol. Y'all should check them out. It's a trip though. Warning.
Ghost absolutely worshiped at the BOC altar. As you become more familiar with BOC's catalog you'll hear it all over the place in Ghost's stuff. And that's not a bad thing at all.
You didn't remember the guitar solo because, for some ungodly reason, there is a radio edit that omits it. I nearly lose my mind when I hear it on the radio butchered. Great review!
Now you need to get into “Veteran of the Psychic Wars”, “Burnin’ For You”, “Godzilla”, “The Marshall Plan”, “Heavy Metal”, “Blue Oyster Cult(their theme song)” & so many others bros….🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
This band is very versatile. Different sounds, different singers... Lots of scifi thimes in their songs. Buck Dharma is extremely underrated as a guitarist.
Gonna personally suggest "Blue Öyster Cult - Veteran of the Psychic Wars" as it's a personal favourite & a bit of a deeper cut. Thanks for doing this, love the band so much, they also recently released an album "The Symbol Remains" that was really good.
PLEASE...PLEASE!! the live Version in Hollywood/Florida 1981...its a must over the Studio version ! The extended Solo in the middle is just..there are no words.
You don't remember the solo part because its edited out of the radio version. So glad you choose the album version. This song is genius. The soft soothing vocals delivering very dark lyrics about suicide. The three albums before this is much more heavy! I like these albums more. Songs like Career of Evil, The Red and the Black, Cities on Flame, Astronomy, ME 262 and many more. Nice catch getting the Ghost connection. Their first big single Elizabeth is soooo Blue Oyster Cult.
Thank you, THANK YOU for playing the album version (and not the radio edit - which removes the guitar freak-out midway through! Which is probably the reason you don't remember that part) This is such a banger. Have always loved this song. The riff, the vocals, and yes, the cowbell!! "I got a fever, and the only prescription...is more cowbell!!"
Now you gotta see them LIVE...start with "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" (Buck Dharma's guitar solo will require a seat belt): ruclips.net/video/7pFdkkjGiEs/видео.html
If there's such a thing as a rock 'n' roll lullaby, that's this song. I love it so much. It just completely transports you to its world. According to the band, the vague suicide theme was unintentional. It's about not being afraid to live or love. It can be scary, but it's a leap of faith. You can't be so afraid of death that you never live at all.
If I remember correctly, this was written by Donald (Buck Dharma) Roeser contemplating an early death after an illness? BOC are great guys. They toured with their families for a time. Have seen them live several times. Always rocked!
Nah, the blistering guitar solo definitely prevents it from being a possible lullaby. I did once sleep with headphones on listening to “Silent Lucidity” by Queensrÿche on repeat during a very boring road trip, though.
Don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but this song was used to eerie effect in John Carpenter's movie 'Halloween'. The original one in the late 70's, not the modern remakes. I believe it was considered the first ever slasher horror to be made. It is a classic for a lot of reasons. If you haven't seen it, it is worth seeing. Hearing it in the movie, turned me on to this band!
I think it is a criminal act that record labels edit this masterpiece (and others) so they can stick it on a "top 100 rock songs" album, proving that they do not care about the music, only about the amount of sales.
A Ghost remake of this song would be epic! And yes this is where the "I need more cowbell" comes from. Burning For You is another good one to check out.
"Cities On Flame" and "Then Came The Last Days Of May" from On Your Feet Or On Your Knees "Unknown Tongue" from Fire Of Unknown Origin "Career Of Evil" from Secret Treaties "7 Screaming Diz Busters" and "The Red And The Black" from Tyranny And Mutation "Astronomy" and "Kick Out The Jams" from Some Enchanted Evening. Those will get you started. If you do "The Red And The Black",note the similarities to Metallica's "Hit The Lights".
One of the first things I see in my head when I hear this song is the opening of the Steven King's The Stand mini series from back when I was a kid. All the dead bodies laying around as the camera pans around with this song playing always stuck with me. Then I think "more cowbell".
Back in the 70's BOC was one of my favorite live bands and thankfully they seemed to be playing someplace I could go see them. If there was a big outdoor concert it would have been odd for them not to be on the schedule. They thrived at those kinds of events.
It's about both not faring death and to take your chances now, ideally with a lover who is just as committed, it's also being ok with this cycle seasons, love stories, and human life.
3:07 By a landslide! Over 50% iirc 4:46 Kind of. It was an SNL skit w/Christopher Walken I've found BOC to be a very underappreciated/underrated rabbit hole in the reactorverse. Yeah they only had a couple other "hits" with Godzilla and Burnin For You. But they also had soo many good deep cuts as well: Flaming Telepaths, Veterans of the Psychic Wars, Astronomy, Joan Crawford, Black Blade, Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll, my favorite I Love the Night, etc.
I've been jamming to this song since middle school. The song's about being eternally in love & not fearing death because love conquers all including death.
Another epic reaction. Hilarious of course. Id really like to see you react to Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun. Think y'all would really like this one!
The reaper comes for us all eventually. Death is a part of life so, why fear it. Dying isn't a matter of "if" but rather "when". Romeo and Juliette would rather be together in death than be forced to live apart. Truly a tragic romance for the ages.
Everyone at one point has heard this song even if you don't know it whether it be on the radio, tv, films or even in public places, in fact you have never heard this before at one point then you live under a literal rock.
Great band and Ghost does have some similarities. Lots more to hear by BOC...Burnin' For You, Godzilla and Veteran of the Psychic Wars live from 10/9/81 has a great extended guitar solo by Buck Dharma

The Sun: Portends good fortune, happiness, joy and harmony. It represents the universe coming together and agreeing with your path and aiding forward movement into something greater/Ascension.

It's about both not faring death and to take your chances now, ideally with a lover who is just as committed, it's also being ok with this cycle seasons, love stories, and human life.
Another great song from BOC is burning for you.✌️
3:07 By a landslide! Over 50% iirc
4:46 Kind of. It was an SNL skit w/Christopher Walken
I've found BOC to be a very underappreciated/underrated rabbit hole in the reactorverse.
I got to know this song since it appears in my favorite horror movie, Halloween from 1978. Very good song. Greetings, brothers!
I've been jamming to this song since middle school. The song's about being eternally in love & not fearing death because love conquers all including death.
Y'all should also check out BOC's "Burnin' For You" and "Godzilla" as well
Another epic reaction. Hilarious of course. Id really like to see you react to Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun. Think y'all would really like this one!
Dang I thought I was the only one who knew Children of the Sun lol.
@@SpyderOne1981 lol. I hear you. Great song though.
YAAASSSSSS!!!!! Joining the Children of the Sun club!! Great effin song!!!!!!!
One of my old favorites. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who still appreciates it.
I'm Burning for You, is another banger by BOC.
My second fave of theirs
Great band and Ghost does have some similarities. Lots more to hear by BOC...Burnin' For You, Godzilla and Veteran of the Psychic Wars live from 10/9/81 has a great extended guitar solo by Buck Dharma
ALL early BOC is supercool.
This is the original. You guys really need to react to BOC, Veterans of the Psychic War live. So cool, you will love it.
This was also the opening song to the Stephen King tv series “The Stand” (the original, not the reboot.)
Thanks for posting this.
BÖC and Ghost are often compared to each other, so, great catch there!
Buck Dharma rocks that guitar!

In the cover art in the Magicians hand, he is holding Tarot cards. The order is as follows:
Death: Signifying an End of things, and new beginnings after.
The Empress: Signifying creation of life, romance, art, or new business.
The Emperor: Suggestive of stability and security in life and that you are in charge of your life now setting up your own rules and boundaries.
The Sun: Portends good fortune, happiness, joy and harmony. It represents the universe coming together and agreeing with your path and aiding forward movement into something greater/Ascension.
Two things come to mind with this track....The Stand and Moar Cowbell!
Same!!! The Stand was great. And kind of prophetic now.
You guys enjoying this masterpiece the same way I do every time I hear it = priceless
Oh man I love this song. So glad you guys are finally getting to this one.
I saw them about 20 years ago in a downtown club in Stamford ct. It wasn't promoted very well and about 10 people showed up. It was like a private party. They would ask us what song we wanted to hear next.
Check the BOC songs "Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll" and "Godzilla."
