Now that you've listened to this, it is ESSENTIAL that you do "More Cowbell": a skit from SNL about this song!!!!! One of the funniest things they ever did, and a great tribute to this song!
Such an incredible song. So many people are afraid of dying it's just a part of life. Nobody's exempt from it. If you embrace the fact that you're going to die and just accept it it won't hold so much power over you.
Absolutely my friend. Once you accept the inevitable, only then will you have the opportunity to fully live life. However one does that (religion, good works, etc) doesn't matter.
Exactly! We need to get comfortable with it. Because it will come upon us all soon enough, it's a tough thing for most people. Prepare beforehand and you can have a peaceful passing.
Blue Oyster Cult was a great band that had several iconic songs this being one of them but they don't get enough credit for being one of those iconic bands of the 70s
So glad I dived into BoC a couple years ago. They might not have anything else that sounds like Don't Fear but they have some really great stuff like Black Blade, I am the Storm, Veteran of the Psychic Wars. Astronomy, the funny title but creepy sounding She's as Beautiful as a Foot. I really see no reason for them to only have like 3 recognized songs when every album has several songs that sound like something that should've definitely made it to radio.
That's one of my most cherished guitar solos to hear. When the radio plays the edited no-solo version I cry a little. Death is a doorway, not an end. A transition rather than a true finality. Therefore there is nothing to fear.
@@DaveRod76 you ever have a dream that felt so real that you didn't know you were dreaming, and the suddenly things get weird and the dream unravels and then you wake up and question whether you're still asleep or not? That's what it was like.
I was just telling my 17 yr old daughter who has recently fallen in love with this song that she will would not be happy hearing this song on the radio because of the edit.
I freaking love this song…another awesome song by BÖC is “Then Came the Last Days of May” “Burnin’ for You” and “Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll” (That Riff….🤯)

We’ve all seen the SNL skit about this song featuring Christopher Walken. It was beyond hilarious. I’ve seen it so many times and still laugh as hard as the first time I heard it. But, the reason for the skit was to pay tribute to one of the band members that had just passed. Thank you for posting and reacting to this. I’ve heard it all my life. I was in middle school when it came out. Listening with the lyrics (I already knew it was about death), now, it takes me to a new perspective. Oddly, the words were calming. We all die.
An all time classic the opening rif is unmistakable , it's a great driving tune too, top down sunnies on hitting the coast road BOC stonking from the stereo, with the smell of salt on the air.
I love your take on the song. I think in the beginning of the song when it says the seasons don't fear the reaper is showing us death is so natural. We fear it but it is natural. Crazy in this modern world, we are comfortable with so much unnatural stuff. The reaper is a figure most see as spooky and menacing.I like in this song, the Reaper is more of a guide instead. At our time, we can go gently and peacefully, take his hand and fly.
I saw Blue Oyster Cult in the late 70’s in Kansas City. They had a mirror ball with lasers bouncing off of it. I was pretty intoxicated and I swear I could feel that light every time it hit me. Got lost from my friends for a while but all in all, a great freaking concert!! 😎☮️❤️
Wow you're so lucky you saw them in Kansas. How weird in a good way just reminded me of Supernatural. I'm sorry they played this song on the show, supernatural has a good soundtrack 👌
This was my Godmother and my song and she died of cancer about 10 years ago and everytime this song comes on i tell her daughter i know your mom is trying to tell me something and last year i kept hearing tnis song over and over and i could feel her trying so hard to reach out and i had been putting off going to the dr and i finally decided to go and come to find out i had cancer and i had i put it off any longer there would have been nothing they could have done but now im cancer free for 6 months. Thats one reason this song is so important to me. Thank you for your reaction to it
I see the shredding guitar as the fear and pain as the body dies. Then, as consciousness fades, the calm music returns and the person has passed to whatever awaits.
I am glad you displayed the lyrics. I've always been fixated on the music, cow bells and the scary "don't feel the reaper" hook. That was definitely deeper about telling someone to let go it's time and it's ok. Perfect scary song to play by your Halloween cemetery display or coming out of a giant Grim Reaper.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice. My favorite BOC song and always will be. The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this at the beginning. Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song. Two make one etc. Another band with this kind of vibe and depth you need to check out if you haven't already is Kansas.
Thanks for sharing all these gems from my childhood. I’m at my uncles house. He’s “babysitting”, but really I’m just hanging out. All his friends and their girlfriends etc. hang out there as well. All these cool albums. I learned chess.
Very versatile band and great musicians. Great catalogue. This song was in the original Halloween (78) movie. As someone with cancer, I find this peaceful. The song writer was very ill when he wrote this.
This was the music playing at the beginning of The Stand, the broadcast version of Stephen King's epic novel. I get goosebumps every time I watch the camera moving through the bio weapons lab with Don't Fear the Reaper playing in the background.
Excellent analysis of the smog's contradictions between the smoot inviting and even "romantic" sound and vibe of the song to the message of death - which what the lyrics are about not fearing death. Great job.
Man I caught so much hell from my mom over this band back in the day.She used to say you are not listening to anything that has something to do with a cult. I was mama it’s just the name of the band But she give me double dose of hell about this band But I love ya mom You are always looking out for me and I appreciate it way more now than I did back then
This Classic Tries To Remind Us To Tell Our Friends & Loved Ones Just How Much They Mean To Us,, AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE Before They're Gone,, THE FLAMING LIPS "DO YOU REALIZE" (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
I've always thought of this song as an old lady facing death, maybe illness or cancer, and her husband who passed before her is singing this song to her to say there is nothing to fear, I've been through it, we'll be together again, at the end she died and joined him...
One the things about BOC was their albums were supposed to be Rock Operas... according to Don Roeser “I was thinking about my own mortality. I wrote the guitar riff, the first two lines of lyric sprung into my head, then the rest of it came as I formed a story about a love affair that transcends death. I was thinking about my wife, and that maybe we’d get together after I was gone.” Per Roeser, the mentioning of Romeo and Juliet had to do with those two lovers were denied the freedom to love in the present but had faith that they would be allowed to love in the hereafter... a love that transcends the mortal coil. We shouldn't fear death because we will see our loves in the next life so to speak
Agents of Fortune album had lots of great songs. Revenge of Vera Gemini, This Ain't the Summer of Love are good. Good ones from early albums are Career of Evil (album version), Cities On Flames w/ Rock and Roll, Then Came the last Days of May, ....
I hear it as don't be afraid of love.. of stepping out.. of taking that chance.. death comes to all.. don't he afraid to take chances.. Yes also about death and not to be afraid of that flight into the unknown.
I really enjoyed your reaction. I have to tell you - I believe it's important for each person to interpret songs the way they feel. And there's nothing wrong with that at all. Definitely nothing to apologize about. Also I think some songs are so cleverly written that there are several interpretations of the song. And the artist/song writer does this intentionally. Lastly, your interpretation of this particular song seemed spot-on to me. 💛✌🍗
Unlike other songs about the death of a lover/friend/family member, this one is accepting it as a natural process that is just a part of life. And perfectly written, played and performed.

The second most optimistic and celebratory song about death and dying in my lifetime. You weren't wrong, Van. That's exactly what it's about, and the sound is smooth. The number one song with a similar theme but different circumstances would be Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks (not written but sung and released by Terry).
One of the things that shocked Don "Buck Dharma" Roeser was when he was asked in an interview why he wrote a song about suicide. That thought had not crossed his mind, and he was stunned to think that people thought he was advocating suicide. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, deals with eternal love and the inevitability of death. He wrote the song while envisioning an early death for himself. There was no thought of suicide; he was painfully aware of the shortened lifespans of many rock 'n rollers, and was contemplating his own potential to join them, not willingly or suicidaly.
The preachers of the day were the first ones to cry "Devil Music!", "Suicide Pact!", and the like. The parasites feed on the fear they can induce in the flock.
This is a great song. It is sung from the perspective of the Grim Reaper about suicide. Reference the verse "Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity. 40,000 men and women everyday (Don't fear the Reaper)... A deceptfully beautiful song about a serious subject.
