Liner Notes: I've loved this song since I was a kid. One of the best love songs ever written. And those harmonies! To die for. I did my best to capture what I loved so much about this song, and I hope you enjoy the results. I suggest headphones. :) You might find the inclusion of the percussion to be unexpected, but it's all there in the original. It's funny, I had listened to the song for years, and hadn't really noticed it. Then one day I heard this on a little bluetooth speaker, and it just jumped out. "Where did that come from??" So funny how you can hear some songs a million times and not fully hear them. But yeah, it's all there. I was happy to have an excuse to finally buy some claves. :) The piano part is super cool, obviously. I figured it all out by ear the best I could, but sometimes the piano is a little buried in the mix during the chorus, so I did my best to extrapolate what I couldn't hear.
Big thanks to Jeff LaQuatra for sitting in on lead and rhythm electric guitar. I met Jeff after I moved to Denver a few years ago. I'm so happy to call him a friend. He's an amazing person and an amazing guitarist. He's happens to be a master classical guitarist, but he also plays lead electric guitar in two bands: the amazing 70's cover band, Mr. Majestyk's 8-Track Revival (mm8tr.com/), and the excellent Denver-based U2 tribute band, Under a Blood Red Sky (www.uabrs.com/).

Fun fact. The bass I’m playing in this video Was made from scratch out of hardwood by my dad and myself. Basically started from a block of wood. But the coolest thing is the fret work was done by Dave Rusan. I lived in Minneapolis at the time, around 1990, and Dave was the guy who built princes guitars. I located him through a fellow musician, and he did the amazing fret work on the bass. It’s my favorite bass and always will be.

What a lovely arrangement and what a beautiful baseline you played. Your dad and the luthier who built the fingerboard did a fabulous building to your instrument I want to ask you a few questions if you don ‘t mind. I’m thinking you put this together using Pro-tools or some similar program. Is that so?
Were all the backup vocals recorded as click-track voiceovers by Mike? Were any parts of the piece recorded during the videotaping sessions? How many tracks did you lay down to put together this recording.

There’s a version with a female singer where the tempo is slowed way down and I hate it. This however is really good.
The original cannot ever be topped, so you are correct. The original is a perfect song.

This is still one of my favorite things we’ve done. Jeff and Bryce sound great, and I’ve always loved this song. It was fun (and challenging) to recreate that piano part and those harmonies.
That piano part would be a challenge. Its my favorite part, and I've never been able to pick it all out of the mix. I don't know of any isolated track of it existing. Sounds like you aced it though.

Ditto. Born in Glasgow (Rottenrow) lived in Paisley only until 6 when we moved to Canada. This song is actually my ring tone on my phone. When I hear the first note I am immediately reminded of how much I love my wife especially how she pulled me out of my dark nights. The problem I have is I have a difficult time answering the phone because I want to hear the whole song every time with tears in my eyes... you guys nailed it. Love your version.

This is one of the best reproductions I've ever heard. I had forgotten that I had left this video on my browser, so when I re-opened my browser later and heard the song I actually thought I was listening to Gerry Rafferty until I started watching the video.
This has been mine and my wife's song for 31 years. I know it backwards and forwards and never considered checking out other versions because I believed Gerry Rafferty's version could not be outdone,but after hearing this version I must admit that I was wrong. My husband and I share your feeling about this song…. We too have listened to it since the ‘70s… when it first hit the airways…. I have the original vanilla album and it has been soooo taken care of that there isn’t a crutch. It’s travelled thousands of miles on our travels… I hope you hear many more songs that you and your wife have shared for 30 + years by this team of musicians. I will be hoping the same for my Prince in shining armor….. 💕

Absolutely FABULOUS!! Wow!!! I play too and have covered this song for a few years now, always got a large response ( standing and clapping ) and have been told I do this very well.. Man, after seeing ( HEARING ) this I am humbled and amazed!! This is the VERY BEST live version of this song EVER RECORDED in MANY opinions, certainly mine.. I have never seen Mr. Rafferty himself do this song with as much fluid emotion as this.. They say ( quoting Steve Vai ) once a piece is OUT THERE and you begin to play it (even them written by others) over time they can, and often do, become yours.. Well, Mike, FINE SIR, you are PROOF of that, and you OWN this one buddy!! Hats off to you and yours!! This is awesome RIGHT DOWN THE LINE!!!

I took a liking to Gerry Rafferty when I came across his LP 'Can I Have My Money Back'way back in the 70s and that was it... I was hooked as a lifelong fan. Love all the music. And this cover is great.

One of my favorite songs of all time, and think you folks did a fantastic job of covering it. I like this song to the point where I tried to get my wife to walk down the aisle to it, but she wanted the traditional wedding song. I think I got robbed there.

This is the best cover of Right Down the Line I have found on You Tube. Down to the Claves and Cow Bells this song was excellently produced! Loved the way it was sung and played by Mike Masse, Jeff La Quatra and Bryce Bloom!
Thank you. I enjoyed doing the percussion in this one. I recorded it mostly with the cajon. Mike did the clave/ wood block I think. But love how this turned out overall.
