It's amazing how if you can speak Romanian you can understand other Romance languages. Conversely, it's not so easy for someone who speaks Spanish or Italian to understand Romanian. Romanian seems to be a kind of lingua franca of the Romance languages, or the basis is closer to vulgar Latin.

English is the present day's Lingua Franca.
Regardless, I don't believe Romanian is a lingua franca between all other Romance languages. Although, since it is closest to Vulgar Latin in terms of grammar, it may be a go between from Vulgar Latin to all the other Romance languages.

I guarantee you will understand way more of Romanian if you get rid of all the diacritics. Those are the ones that make the language harder to understand. Thats why Romanians can understand other Romance languages but they cant understand Romanian as well. Its much easier understood when written. The same problems come with French and Portuguese. They are kinda hard to understand when spoken but easier when written. As strange as Romanian may sound it still is very similar to the other ones but the diacritics make it harder.
