  • Electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, or eVTOLs, could be the solution to rush hour traffic. But jumping in one to get across town is still a long way off. Anderson Cooper tested out Lift Aircraft's Hexa to see what this future could look like. Read more here: cbsn.ws/3JU6Hxs

That get's you up to 15 mi. - HEXA is designed for maximum efficiency and safety in hover for short hop trips, and not for cruise efficiency for longer range trips. 85% of trips by car are

      @@liftaircraft 15 miles, if you're willing to fly right up until the moment you run out of power.
      Also, 15 minutes doesn't give much wiggle room if something goes wrong and the landing needs to be delayed by a few minutes.
      I'm on the wait list to fly, and I'll likely invest, but... being honest, OP is right about the battery tech needing to improve.

    Aircraft for daily commute will never happen, and there's a very simple reason for that: If your car malfunctions on your way to work or dropping kids at school, you simply pull over to the shoulder or secondary street and wait for AAA or whatever tow service you prefer. While on an aircraft, a malfunction probably means the end of you. It's really not that hard to visualize 🤷🏻‍♂️

    There is info out there that suggest no license required but I wonder because they say it is over 500lbs and ultra light Part 103 is still 254 lbs. I checked the regs thinking perhaps they increased the weight limit but they have not and it has been 254 lbs for 10 years or more.

    • @liftaircraft
      @liftaircraft Год назад

      Part 103 has additional weight allowances for floats and parachutes, etc. HEXA's weight allowance is 488 lbs - confirmed by a third party technical standards committee from the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association. An inspection also performed by the FAA.

    The air traffic is a very delicate subject. You see the tons of rules that exist right now just for few airplanes. And also the consequences of an accident, malfunctions, human behavior, etc. can you imagine this implemented massively? It’s chaos. Unless you have some sort of automation for everyone or other mitigation mechanisms. We have to be realistic.

    Is there a safety system on board so if there was a failure due to the propellers, batteries, or even a malfunction in the detection system would there be a saafetty net to be able to prevent a fatal accident from occurring. Would be pretty terrifying hearing the silence of the propellers and complete spiraling down.

    • @boutek
      @boutek 2 года назад +5

      It's light enough to have an emergency parachute but it needs to fly high enough for a parachute to be effective. 15 mins battery life seems awfully low. I don't see this being used in dayily life anytime soon.

    • @michaelfoxbrass
      @michaelfoxbrass 2 года назад +2

      With 18 independent propellers, each with its own battery, it would make sense that if one or more propellor or battery failed, a program would limit the height of flight and direct the remaining units and the pilot (or a remotely-based ground controller) to begin descent to land.

    • @liftaircraft
      @liftaircraft Год назад +1

      Yes, there is a ballistic parachute that deploys autonomously if the aircraft loses control for any reason.

      Yes, max flight time generally goes down as max gross weight goes up. There is a limit to how much battery weight you can add if you want a useful payload and, in our case, we need to stay compliant with Ultralight Class (FAR Part 103).

      Good question. Anderson Cooper mentions 45 mph and 90 feet high - that is just what we had tested up to at the time of this interview. HEXA's max altitude will be limited more by Class G airspace (generally up to 1200 feet AGL) and available flight time. Max speed achieved in simulation is 90mph, but regulations limit this calls of aircraft to 62mph.
