MegaHAL ain’t really AI. But learns and mixes up phrases and replies with a merge of things it’s been programmed and learned from past conversations. However come to think of it that’s the mode I go into when engaging in small talk at social gatherings. COME SEE Baudot Kosmo AT THIS MUSEUM IS NOT OBSOLETE, open every weekend :- this-museum-is-not-obsolete.com/
When Kosmo says "thinking" over and over while twitching his eyes, it reminds me of TV shows in the 60's where people might ask a computer a logic bomb and then the whole thing just smokes and explodes.
Like the androids in Star Trek whose necklaces flash when interpreting difficult situations. Then they call out to Norman just before they tilt their heads and crash.
(◉▂◉ ) Those teeth screaming "THINKING THINKING THINKING AWAGABBBABABARLAGH" with zero context is probably one of the best ways to scar someone for life. Love it!
That thing would have terrified me when I was a little boy. Even fifty years later it's a little disturbing. Edit: for even greater noise you could have all the conversations printed out by a 1940s teletype.
You could potentially make a text to speech kosmo that reads out the text it writes back to you, might scare the kids a bit when they visit the museum though lol
Being a police dispatcher seeing that GA at the end of the script I immediately went back to my early days of training using TDD and a keyboard for 911 TDD calls and all the shorthand...great stuff!!
This is sorcery. I have always been amazed by people that can think of a thing and then just hook a bunch of circuit boards together and suddenly that thing exists. It's magic.
Sometimes the stuff you make is so impressive I can only really comprehend your life in the context of a cartoon character. Probably not the main character, but some mad scientist that the protagonist runs into that makes some kind of gadget that drives the plot forward. Usually the most interesting character in the show anyway. Keep up the good work, what you do is an inspiration!
This project is AMAZING i really like the bleeping sounds when he's typing out an awenser. Just like he would be pulled out of an early sci fi movie lol
In high school, I used a Teletype ASR-33 with an acoustic coupler to talk to the computer at the downtown board of education building. It used baudot code to transmit and receive, and thankfully they didn't allow the sound outside the coupler.
I thought this was new when I saw it on Saturday - shame the background noise was giving it some trouble thinkingthinkingthinkingthinking. Super glad I made time to visit the museum - there's so much cool stuff that you've got which I've seen covered on either your or other old tech youtubers' channels, but equally so much more stuff that you've clearly put your heart and soul into presenting and making available to the public. It's a whole different experience seeing everything in person, and the smell of old tech and weird gear is just something else.
Baudot Kosmo has a weirdly 70s/80s style creepy robot vibe to him, but he is very cool. Props to you for keeping these kinds of technology alive despite them being forgotten to time!
Hey, MegaHAL! Many years ago I tried to use this to set up an IM chatbot with the intent to encourage people to chat it up over the internet and then post the logs online. It never worked, but it brings back memories. I still have the source code somewhere...
I did the same over IRC - made an IRC bot, when IRC was still a thing. Fast forward 20 years, and now the same code I used back then is being used here...
Being HoH... this was some major nostalgia for me, my school had TONS of these TTY's everywhere (including phone booths) back in the early 2000's... fun fact, they also had 6-8x1.2V NiCad cells in them (THEY LEAK!) which are probably more than likely toast in your set.
I've got one of those baudot keyboard things - except it is missing the speaker and receiver. Someone literally glued thin pieces of wood over the top of the holes, too. I'd love to build something like this with a Rpi Zero inside of it, but the phone line connection is the limiting factor for me here.
That AI is going to gain consciousness and haunt your museum. On the bright side, a museum haunted by a man created ghost will be an awesome attraction.
even though its working pretty fine right now. raspberry pis are quite slow at proccessing AI data. i would reccomend looking into replacing it with something with a AI accelerator or a gpu, something like the nvidia jetson
Hi there So i bougt an old telephone in a second hand shop a while ago, and I want to use it. Is it possible to recive phonecalls that go to my smartphone on the old phone by re routing the incomming and possibly the outgoing calls over the old phone? I was hoping if someone would know it would be you Maybe you can programm someting and make a video about it? I would be very interessted in that!
Time to find a Creed Teletype (a 7E or a 444) and hook it up to the exchange and if you find a 444 use punched tape for extra cool! Maybe you already have one, easy to hook up with a 20mA loop....
It would be great if you could somehow make some sort of converter to convert the current TTY standard to the border code so that people can just dial in with their mobile devices in TTY mode to communicate with the kosmo
Back in the day when you use physical house phones to access the internet what we’re those devices called looks allot like your minicom 5000 but worked different seen on in war games the movie and seeing this peeked my interest
The more "Giving something AI" videos I watch from LMNC, I get more and more convinced that he's gonna start the uprising of the machines from The Matrix.... But they are all going to be those long 3 headed Furbies instead of Squiddies/Sentinels. 😂
Kosmo looks like terrifying AI from 80's Sci-Fi psycho movie, sure text to speech module could improve the feeling. If i saw that thing in the 80's I would have nightmares for quite a long time.

MegaHal "I dont think you should do that Sam"
It's horrific. But in a good way.
The AMOUNT of noise that thing emits would drive me insane. Maybe in a good way.
Ha yeah. It’s all getting pretty noisy here. I need to make quieter machines or the museum will be unbearable haha
😆❤
You need one for your live streams 😂😜

Nice seeing you here Waccoon!
What is your one purpose in life? Explode, of course.
"I'm scared of you" well I guess that solves the problem of the AI going mental and killing things
Yes.. Played portal?
No, it just means it'll kill because it feels threatened.
I can see why Sam would be frightening to an electrical entity
"you can probably talk to this over the internet" Mankind's last words. Kosmo now rules earth

I think this version will do that job just fine

Well, what else is there? Go overkill or go home, that's my reply 😁

When i saw at 3:34 reply with "helllo, hello how could it be", i got flashback to very line from "shock horror", very fitting, Kosmo. :D
The AI starts out with all the LMNC song lyrics, which is probably why that happens....

I especially enjoyed the song during the Kosmo build montage.

The only problem now is the uncanny valley. I swear Kosmo is a real human.
love the song describing the build haha. more of those please

I love the WAV Trigger board, got one last year for a project; Awesome bit of hardware!
