Erin Gruwell, the real teacher of the Freedom Writers, describes the group of students who eventually became the Freedom Writers. Be Heard on / beheard
All though the movie was not based on my class. I was in her first class year as a student teacher at LB Wilson. She did some amazing things for us. She came to class one day and asked us what the Holocaust was. She was surprised that only a couple of hands were raised. I did not know what that was. Some how she got a hold of Steven Spielberg, who we got to meet and took us to Universal Studios...where we saw the movie "Schindlers List"...gave each of us a copy and a class picture with him (which I still have)! We also got a tour of the Museum of Tolerance. Good Memories!
Erin is an absolutely strong and amazing woman. She changed the lives of many troubled teens who would have never gotten where they are if it weren't for her. I hope she's extremely proud of herself as well as her students. Those students pushed themselves so hard and Erin helped them do it. All of them are wonderful and I'm so happy to see a happy ending to the troubled lives they lived as teens.
Just finished the movie..couldn't stop myself to see her and hear her....those guys were really lucky to get her as a teacher...keep moving on freedom writers
I have seen the movie and am reading the book and she truely seems like an amazing and fun teacher. Erin you have influenced me even more than I have influenced myself to stick it thru hard times. You truely are a great and inspirational person.
I looked at film and I was very sorry for what this is for something he did not know or do not want to publicly disclose. Erin has done something with the children that are not words to describe. Each cast Erin world is richer people like you. Need to know for you! You are those who hope to be, which brings light in the lives of those that is required, and the rest of us that we live in peace rooms every day ...
One of the best teachers I ever had was one of the worst teachers I ever had. Let me explain. This class was 11th graders in Trigonometry and Math Analysis in a public school about 40 miles from Long Beach. Although the school and the community had very similar physical safety issues for very similar reasons as portrayed in the Freedom Writer's movie, this particular math class was like that honors English class in the movie except somewhat more ethnically diverse. What that teacher said to us top students after several weeks ... is that in college, the total responsibility for learning is on the student -- not the teacher. No truant officer will come looking for you after high school. At that point I started developing strategies to learn, even though I could not understand hardly any concept that teacher taught on the day she taught it. For example, I did many odd numbered problems that were not assigned because the answers were in the back of the book. I started reading ahead a chapter so I would not be overwhelmed with everything the teacher said the next day. In other words, I stopped using the teacher's inability to teach as an excuse for my poor performance. It is like saying I did not finish boot camp in the military because my instructor was hostile. The best thing a teacher can do for you is challenge you with some goals (read about Anne Frank if you want to know what tough is like), and let you figure out how to "push" and "pull" to accomplish them. Today we are going to attempt to negotiate this obstacle. No more spoon feeding you like a 4 year-old. If you don't want to learn it, there is a long list of excuses to choose. It is not on the teacher or the textbook. It is on you. I am mightly impressed with what Mrs. Gruwell did in four years. Not only did she have the mindset I am talking about. By some miracle she got some students to develop it. A professor in college got me to be a better person by challenging me to teach class the next time that class met, when I was acting like a jerk. I was very humbled the next time that "History of Theater in England" class met.
writing in a diary doesn't get you to the college it makes you to believe in yourself. Makes you feel important. That gives you a courage to believe you can actually achieve something. A lot of students don't get to college not becouse they can't but just becouse they think they can't and just don't try!!!
this is her job. what she did is more common than we care to acknowledge; thousands of teachers do this every single day. some spend thousands of their personal dollars raising and teaching students. we are impress because we are surprised. why? a gentle, white woman "saved" a few black children who are not of her kind. she did not have to? what love for the other. "kodak moment" .the real story is how many continue to avoid the responsibility and are identified as exceptional teachers and educators.> Let us support and celebrate our dentists who clean our teeth!!!!!!! oh and the sanitation worker who cleans our street!!!!
If there were more teachers like her the education system is this country would be sooooo much better. I mean a teacher who gives a fuck about her students regardless of their race, background, or class; who knew!!
If you claim to be from the ghetto then you said it yourself inner city kids are screwed up. so that must means you're screwed up. Don't be mad because you weren't privileged to have a teacher like Erin Gruwell.Change your thoughts and Become a teacher like Erin Gruwell.

he wasn't talking about erin.
And the real one si doing quite a performance too.
She wants so much to change the world that she stopped teaching.
Exactly!!!!
Vote for Erin!!!!!
She taught for four years and now wants to make some money. Her speech is totally demagogic.
What a disappointment.
what a martyr. Great job lady. Way to brag about how hard your job is.

You shouldnt have been a teacher then. Clearly you dont believe in people enough.
