    I like to start my day, whenever I awake early enough, by watching the sunrise. Typically, I step outside my back door with camera in hand or next to me on a tripod as I greet the day in quiet contemplation. Gratitude is never far away and it is a wonderful way to start the day by being thankful. Standing in the emerging morning light I am struck by all of the things I have to be thankful for. In the summer I listen to the morning chorus which of course I am very thankful for. In the winter I simply feel the miracle of my own breath. I am thankful for my country home. I'm thankful for the rising sun, the impressively coloured sky and the natural abundance that surrounds me. I'm thankful for my existence, for my health and my body that has carried me for the last almost 68 years. I'm thankful for the day. Mostly, I'm thankful simply to be alive and to be able to share my day with my wife. If you don't know what to be thankful for, then I'd say you need to be more thankful. Bring thankfulness into your life. Go stand in a field somewhere and think about it. Let the experience of your gratitude wash over you. Let your thankfulness fill you up.
