Pivoting Fence / Resaw Bandsaw Fence Using a Magswitch Jig

- A pivoting auxiliary fence also called a resaw fence for a bandsaw can be useful for making veneers, cutting banding strips, or cutting thicker strips of highly figured wood for things like picture frames, boxes, and similar smaller projects as it helps eliminate bandsaw drift. In my case, I am using the Magswitch jig technology that will make the fence easy to adjust and very versatile with magnets. So join me, as I make this bandsaw fence build.

Thanks for that, Colin - it would be good to have some info as to why this method is preferable to using a fence.
Does the pivot point go in front of the blade edge or behind it? from the side that is. In other words, does the pivot point go in front of the teeth or behind the teeth of the blade?
Imho it's better to adjust the saw so i doesnt drift. that way you can use a regular fence and make even cleaner cuts
Why a pivot fence and not a regular fence?. This seems like a bit more dangerous. Besides if you were making this type of fence wouldnt you want the pivot point to be as hard as possable...Maybe even from plastic or metal?? Wouldnt this cause too much stress on the bandsaw over time if the pivot point and the edge of the superstructure was too far from each other. This jig seems to be better suited for a jigsaw maybe...maybe. Ive only been doing this a few years so please be nice if im wrong everyone else
I would also like to know why it is better than regular fence. (but I am pretty sure there is a reason why)
Shane Nudds It’s a wood DIY version of the Magswitch Resaw Guide but taller.
I think that Colin is showing a "jig" that could be used. I myself have built a fence that goes over my 4" high fence to extend it to 8". I find this is what works good for me. The main thing to keep in mind is that higher the blade guard so more wood you want to cut; the blade will turn on you. Make sure that your blade is sharp, and you push the wood slowly. You are cutting a lot of wood. You will also need to make sure that your blade is 90 degrees from the table. You will eventually figure out what works better for you. It all comes with time, trial and error. Good luck with your projects.
The pivot fence is designed to help counteract any blade drift you might encounter on your band saw. You can adjust the back end of the wood as it is being fed through if your blade starts to veer off the line, and the distance from the protrusion to the blade can be kept fairly consistent throughout the cut. A lot of drift can be counteracted by ensuring that you have proper tension on the blade and your wheels are set up right but not everyone has their saw tuned up properly and have to deal with drift.
One of the quirks of band saws is that they often resist cutting parallel to a straight fence with any real precision. While some fences can be adjusted to compensate for this "drift" that setting usually is not applicable to different blades or even the same blade as it begins to dull. Some find a straight fence, perhaps augmented with a taller auxiliary face, to be adequate for cutting thin slices from a board. There are no constants here. You have to try it on your band saw and see if you are satisfied with the results
The resaw post keeps the wood square to the table surface and limits the cut to the distance between it and the blade. The shape of the resaw post allows it to be used as a pivot. A line is drawn on the top edge of the wood indicating where the cut is to be made and the resaw post (and fence) is adjusted so the blade aligns with that mark when the wood is held against it. The operator then holds the wood against the resawpost and guides the wood through the blade pivoting it on the resaw post as needed to stay on the cut line.
Great little jig Colin, thanks. Please could you do some projects just using a vice, pillar drill, band saw and linisher as that’s all I have in my workshop, the table saw stuff is out of my remit, many thanks. 👍👍👍
Wonderful great job
Colin why use a pivot fence and not your standard fence.
I will let you adjust for blade drift, so you get even cuts. Thanks for watching!
Mag switch has 2 or 3 sizes of mags. Which one do you recommend for this? Also, what is the bit you use to cut out for the switches, I've never seen anything like it. Thanks!
That's called a Forstner bit and they come in a range of sizes from about regular drill bit size to 2” and above. They work pretty much like a hole saw, except that they don't leave you with a sometimes useable small disk once the hole is cut, BUT the cut itself is cleaner.
Brilliant, and love your watch ! :)
Nicely done Colin! Yet another simple but effective jig for the bandsaw............ Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Where is the point/pivot positioned in relation to the blade: leading edge, gullet, trailing?
It's not critical.
@@retiree1033 thanks.
Very Cool jig !!!!!!! Thanks for showing how to buil this Pivoting Fence Sir
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Boa noite ficou muito chique seu gabarito
That's a neat little jig Colin and will come in very handy !
Cheers, Bram
Thanks for watching, Bram!
Hi Colin I enjoy your channel you have many wonderful tips and tricks. I would love to see a build video of yours. From start to completion
I have many older build videos if you check my library out. Thanks for watching!
I'm really thankful for your vids. They are nicely made and high quality.
But also I find your surname funny, here in germany it's pronounced so differently. Btw my surname literally means fruit in German 😅
Ps:can you show a closeup of the magnets? Things? Never saw something like that before
check this out............magswitch.com/product/magjig150/
Yes, I've heard many meanings for it over the years. My family is Dutch. Thanks for watching!
Wow! I never saw a fence like that. I'll have to try that one. Cheers Colin.
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Great thanks for your videos
A greeting from Spain
Thanks for watching!
Good stuff Colin love your tips love from England
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Pretty cool. I’ll make one ☝️
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Hi Colin, That looks to be a great addition to the band saw. Cheers, Huw
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
First. I'll have to make this at some point😁
Thanks for watching!
Are the strips all the same width or can you change strip width? Couldn't see how. Live your stuff thanks!
Just turn off the clamps and move the fence in/out.
As Ian said, all you need to do is adjust the mag switches. Thanks for watching!
