I have huge praise for the actor Gary Lewis who played Billy Elliot's father - in this theatre scene in particular - where he truly looks as if he's absolutely overcome with emotion and has been crying his eyes out. He's a great actor. And much praise also for the dancer Adam Cooper for his role in Swan Lake. I saw the production of Swan Lake live with him in it and it was one of the most wonderful and memorable experiences of my life.
Yup . Gary Lewis WAS this movie. Outstanding performance - all of it worked because of his portrayal of this exhausted , broken, resilient, brave , loving character.
Thank you for pointing this out. I always don’t see the best actors because they’re so believable, I forget - they don’t “shine”, they’re so real, plain & ordinary, just like real life. And, yes, I could see just by the small slo-mo clip that this dancer was extraordinary. I would love to see an entire performance. I have not seen this movie. I’m sort of intrigued, now, after seeing his boyhood performance before his Dad, then the audition scene, and now, this…
That heart stopping moment, that leap, not just for Billy, but his dad finally seeing and loving what Billy has done, against all odds. I love the film, the soundtrack , t red so right but that ending,, that leap is so worth waiting for , absolutely brilliant. Congratulations to the director, all who contributed to this super film.
That is a father who doesn't understand his son...but who does *LOVE* his son. And when he finally *gets* that his son wants above all else to dance, to be a dancer...he is willing to set aside his pride to do what his son *needs* from his father: To support him in any way he can.
My father was a miner from Seaham harbour, Dawden Pit. On one of his visits to Australia I took him to see Billy Elliot in Sydney. Not joking…. It only took him 5mins to start crying… and he cried all the way through the performance. The cast crew got to know he was there and treated him like royalty. After the show we went backstage to meet cast and crew. He cried all the way through that as well.
How does a young prodigy dance as a grown man that had little measurable skill, but acres of passion? There really isn't an answer to that, Billy could have evolved his craft in many different ways. Who do they give the role as Billy to narrow down his talents to? The point is that showing him as the Swan on the big stage confirms that he developed into an elite dancer. The ending was powerful because each person watching can use their own imagination as to what dancer young Billy became.
I think the film was to portray how Billy achieved his dream and the difficulties as a boy in a poor family and a father who changed his mind to allow his son to follow his dream got to go to the Royal Ballet School , and the ending to prove he succeeded. A beautiful ending. The film needed nothing more than that
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️
Such a great film. Having watched this ballet live, how incredibly hard the dancers have to keep super fit and toned, no easy task. The music takes you to another world and the male dancers are so magnificent especially 🎉🎉🎉

Anyone giving people who think male dancers are "Nancy boys" one second of thought are wasting what precious time you have on this earth. As someone who grew up training as an elite athlete my whole childhood (not dancing, but doing it 6+ hours a day) we knew that dancers are every bit, if not more, the athlete any of us were.
@@2charliep Oh yes. I agree. I didn't mean it to be mean. Sorry if it came off that way. I never thought you thought they were (if that makes sense, lol). Have a good day!
Wonderful film.. Male ballet dancers are to be applauded. It is really irritating, in this day and age, that people still think that way. I have a leaflet, many years ago, showing a photograph of the sublime Ivan Vasiliev holding the equally sublime Natalia Osipova in the air.. at an unbelievable angle (Don Quixote) ... unsurpassed.
Adam cooper was tremendous in the closing scene of a masterpiece based on the memories of lee hall,a screenwriter when he was growing up in newcastle during the 1984 mining strikes.

That final scene with Billy as the adult dancer is one of the greatest scenes in a movie.
Absolutely. I cannot stop the chills even after hundreds of views.

Such a beautiful, sweet movie. The ending when the father gasps makes me cry every time.
And then every time the tears start a little sooner in anticipation of the gasp.
WOW~
Brings tears to my eyes every time. The ending is so powerful. He's so solid ..so contained in himself. Like nothing I've ever seen.

No matter how many times I watch the ending, I still get goosebumps. ❤
I am watching it nearly every day;. Thrilling.
The love of the father and the commitment of the son to full fill his dreams is what makes this movie great.
This is exactly the story of what being a father is all about. Great movie!
Great movie. I just wished they'd shown more of Billy dancing as a grown man.

Same here. I was disappointed that all we got to see of Billy’s dancing as an adult was that one magnificent leap.

from the dirt and grime and sweat of the colliery to the beauty of the music and grace of the dance - great film
I adore this movie. The boys love of dance, finding himself, and the changes in the father
Saw this movie in a small theatre downtown Manhattan when it first came out. What a stunning success for a low-budget film.
I can watch the scenes of this movie over and over. Every time, I get emotionally again. ❤

Anyone thinking male dancers are “Nancy boys” or whatever, should try lifting a full grown woman high in the air, and then make it look effortless.
