Best-selling US author Nadia Bolz-Weber is a Lutheran pastor with tattoos of the Gospels on her body. She cultivates a frank mode of communication and founded a church for outcasts. She talks to Olivia Röllin about sin, sex and taboos.
Bolz-Weber grew up in a fundamental Christian family, which she rebelled against at an early age. She was an alcoholic, a stand-up comedian, who was looking for religious meaning. She found her way back to Jesus, studied theology and founded a church for people who could find no place in other churches: homosexuals, transsexuals, war veterans, alcoholics. She denounces false Christian commandments on sex and speaks openly about her own abortion. Her books are best-sellers and she holds talks worldwide and wants to spread the message of the Gospel further. In her latest book Shameless, she calls for the Church to remove the taboos surrounding sexuality and undergo a sexual reformation. She speaks to Olivia Röllin about her faith, the power of sexuality and false shame.
Nadia Bolz-Weber was in Basel as a guest from 26-28 April for the 25th anniversary of the Open Church of St Elisabeth.
