In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, Marco Polo is based on the famed explorer's adventures in Kublai Khan's court in 13th Century China, and the dark and tempestuous battle for the expanding Mongol empire.
John Fusco, who wrote the Academy-Award nominated feature Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is executive producer and showrunner along with Dan Minahan, whose previous work includes Homeland and Game of Thrones, with Patrick Macmanus, Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Elizabeth Sarnoff as executive producers.

@Ron Lewenberg Yes, it was one of the most expensive series, and didn't give the return Netflix expected- that's ever the reason to any company cancel something. But the series deliver the money that was spent, it's really beautiful. The unique thing I have against Marco Polo, is some script directions that I didn't like so much.

This show is a prime example of why you should never listen to critics and make up your own mind. Soooooo many critics bashed this show but it is absolutely enjoyable, especially if you like classic kung fu flicks and things.
Can't wait for this new season.
No sarcasm here, I honestly can't imagine how someone can be unable to like this show. It's so well done. Seriously hyped for season 2!
Season 1 was underwhelming imo. Most characters were forgettable and the show didn't have much of an epic feel because the attack on Xianyang only happened in the last 2 episodes. I agree with the critics that the series is at best a 7/10 but I am happy to see a 2nd series where most of it isn't sending Marco on fetch quests.
I don't think you agree with the critics then, because to many critics it was far below a 7/10.
It's currently sitting at 24% on RT for critics, while it's at a whopping 92% for viewers, that's a GIGANTIC difference in terms of what the average viewer thought of it vs what the critics thought.
watch how those same critics change their turn for this season.
Press critics are full of shit. Never read them, never let them think for you. They really deserve to die.
I don't know if they're going to change their minds with S2, but I honestly don't care. 27% (press) vs 92% (audience) on RT : just says everything about how Marco Polo S1 was great despite all the shit that rained on it.
Marco Polo is really, really one of the best series that ever got released. Production level is outstanding, casting is perfect (well, Lorenzo Richelmy could have been better, and im sure he will reveal his potential during S2), story gets more and more interesting, even for someone which is not familiar with Mongol history.
But press didn't like it because journalists are no brainers. They can't stand slow rythm (which immediatly stops with EP 5/6 i think), they can't stand absence of action and violence. And don''t show them sex scenes, because if they see one, they will call your series a GoT wanabee.

What I especially like about this show is that Marco isn't the great white hero and only interesting character. In fact, at the end of this show I found that there is really no main character, because every character is equally intriguing. The series really raises moral questions and seriously makes you consider where the line is drawn, and at the end you might find that the ones you thought were the devils (for instance, Kublai's wife) in reality are only a part of a complex, intricate game of power, love and faith - there are no heroes or villains in this show, only humans, which is why the show is so great.
Exactly. I was far more interested in the Mongolians and Chinese that I almost forgot the series was called Marco Polo and there was a white guy in it.
Calvin Nickel how do you forget about Marco when 90 percent of the time he’s the only one who saves the day. He’s like the only one on the show who ever gets anything done to the point where I don’t understand how the shows version of Kublai ever got anything done before he showed up 🤷🏻♂️ all of his sons are either plotting to betray him or having a back to back identity crisis. Chabi is pretty much the biggest effort of keeping the kingdom together and even all her plans are full of holes.
Definitely not true. Marco is portrayed as the only rational and trustworthy person in the show. Thanks to him the Mongols manage to make siege engines and conquer China. This is so incorrect historically.

Cant believe they cancelled this show. Truly amazing plot, interesting character development, great historical setting, story about one of the worlds greatest explorers and traders, there are so many ways the story can unfold and they shut it down. I got to see it just now in 2019 and im so dissapointed they cancelled it.
I finished S2 and began searching season 3 and came to know it cancelled. Years ago. Im so heartbroken ive never been this sad over a show before .
I share exactly the same feeling now, in 2021. What a shame to cancel such a great show. Also I have no clue why it is so underwatched and made netflix lose $200mil... Kinda sad that the netflix audience apparently doesn't enjoy this type of series.

1st season of Penny Dreadful is good. The subsequent ones were just so-so. They never really provided any answers as to why Eva Green's character is so important and powerful. The one time she exhibited power was when vampires (iirc) attacked her, she screamed, then they left.
Even Knightfall. Because of lack of views and losses they just screwed up the ending. The show had so much potential.

I like MP but let's be honest: GoT is waaayyyy better, we cannot even compare them... I wait for each new seasons of GoT almost like if my own life depends on it while MP... well, I wanted a season 2 so bad because it couldn't end like that and to know what happens next but it's different. By the way, this 2nd season is quite disappointing for the moment in my opinion. :/
To this day this is one of the best series iv ever watched. How it got canceled is beyond me. the cast was incredible, settings were gorgeous, the plot fascinating and even compelled me to watch I couldn't even tell you how many docu-style videos regarding the rise and fall of the Mongol empire. One of the largest empire to exist.
Thank God for Netflix. I love how they take chances like this.

Yea I still don't get what they marked it down for. In the sense of different factions at war yea you could compare it to Game of thrones in that sense. Even when looking at it from that perspective though I really enjoyed the first season. At first I was skeptical cause of the reviews but eventually decided to check it out since I do like reading bout different historical figures. Kublai Khan and marco polo being two of them. I didn't want to take time to watch what may be a crappy show but I was surprised at how good it was (at least to me) so I'm glad it got enough watching for Netflix to do a season 2. Looks like they are really picking it up now.

El Duderino Not really, the whole show wanted to focus around the Mongol time period as most shows don't stick with that time period, they were displaying the events Marco Polo served under the Khan during that time period and they should have kept going, I really enjoyed watching from the Mongol point of view

Other than Fresh Off the Boat, this is the only show with a predominantly-Asian cast that I watch. Props to Netflix for opening more opportunities for Asian representation.

Especially the way it ended, season 3 looked like it could have been amazing, especially after showing khans more ruthless side in season 2 with the emperor, doing stuff he had to do even when it broke him. They could have showed mass atrocities committed by both sides in season 3, Christians and mongals

I like what I see. Making Kublai the epicenter of the series is how it should be. What he does reverberates and sets everyone else up. And then having Marco as our "everyman" eyes helps when we who are unfamiliar with some aspects of Mongol culture that we Amy not understand or miss.
Finally!!! How long has it been since season 1 ?! 2 years?! And then the small episode about Hundred Eyes?! I was so afraid this would not be renewed,I am so glad it did!

This show got released in 2014 !! I literally just finished binging watching this show. How have I not known about this show earlier. It’s the end of 2023 and I just found this show. This by far is the best series I’ve ever watched on Netflix. And there’s no season 3 !?!? Smh

One thing that makes me watch this show is because of Mei LIn's story...she's been through hardships of reuniting with her daughter in season 1 and here in season 2, she's given an outstanding story line, especially how she got free from Ahmad. I love her acting. Thankfully she's been one of the main cast of this show. Also I want to see more of Khutlun's story. I love her badass personality.

Honestly season 2 BLOWS SEASON 1 AWAY. Don't get me wrong, season 1 was fricken awesom. It's just that season 2 is off the charts. I'm half way thru and I LOVE it. Total winner. Spectacular.

I don't know how he could have lost money on such a masterpiece, it's a great injustice, there are over a million of us who want season 3, maybe a donation should be organized for the Netflix series "Marco Polo" as many as we have to give as much money as we can. Quarantine made me watch this marcopolo series, and im super impressed, cant believe nobody ever suggested me to watch this series before .. so underrated not sure why, probably something to do with the historical accuracy?.. anyway pleasee bring the series back and do more promotions, its too good, it should survive ✌️

finally, have been waiting for almost 2 years
Season 2 was even more epic than season 1! The last episode was just... argh, goosebumbs. This is beginning to seriously question my #1 rank on my list of best TV shows. The character development is outstanding, phenomenal. I dont know what I'll spend the time with until season 3 comes out.... because it has to!

Bring this show back! The cast was amazing. I just think this show was marketed wrong and it came out too early for its time.
Reasons to bring it back:
- Benedict Wong is now more well known through his Marvel projects.
- RUclips channels "Kings and Generals" their Mongolian videos always get good views.
- Mongolian band, The HU, is popular.
- Mongolian food channel, ARTGER, is popular.
- Ghost of Tsushima, the video game, is popular.
Maybe not another full season, but a three part movie to give the series a proper ending.
