+Alison Leggatt Bought this on vinyl the day it came out; and it's still one of my treasured possessions through seven addresses and two marriages.Bought it again on CD, and again on 180gm :)
Sound very similar to Genesis and I swear I heard the voice of Phil Collins and Fish with Marillion sing as good as any Genesis song. One of UK under-rated band.
Well, I'm 15 almost 16. These songs came out a long time ago! Yet this music is the best music I have ever heard. One of the best bands I have ever heard also.
I have a son your age. I certainly wish he were capable of appreciating music like this, just as you! Have you ever heard " Watermelon in Easter Hay" by Frank Zappa?
Huddled in the safety of a pseudo silk kimono Wearing bracelets of smoke, naked of understanding Nicotine smears, long, long dried tears, invisible tears Safe in my own words, learning from my own words Cruel joke, cruel joke Huddled in the safety of a pseudo silk kimono A morning mare rides, in the starless shutters of my eyes The spirit of a misplaced childhood is rising to speak his mind To this orphan of heartbreak, disillusioned and scarred A refugee, refugee.
The sign of good music is if it stands the test of time. I was 18 when this came out and over 30 years later its still gives me an evocative, powerfull musical journey. I'm not surprissed that fish has in recent years toured this fantastic contrubution to comtemporary music history. Marillion/Fish at their peak imo.
I've met and talked to Fish back stage and at the bar, he's a great guy to talk to,and a lot of his songs are based on his own personal true life experiences. And and awsome thing I loved and him is,just like me he's drinks like whale shark and smokes cigarettes and a bit of the old Dutch nice Dutch finest tobacco.Real nice all round guy dudes 🎸🎶🎤🤘☮️❤️X)
It did for many of us young miss men n women here in Bolton of that life can sometimes be very bitter sweet when you get dragged up in any declining has been industrial dirty old town.Mine Bolton dude❣️🎸🎶🎤 X
One drunken night my best friend and I decided to go through his brothers large album collection to find something we'd never heard. 2 measures into the album we were hooked. Every album with fish at the vocals are works of poetic art.
Utter genius how the songs segue into each other. You think its all about Kayleigh but this is songwriting at the top of its game. Fish's passion is unparalleled. One of the best British guitarists at work. Just brilliant music.
i first heard this when i was 6 years old. It changed my life for ever. I can never thank Derek enough for creating this and being a tsunami of creation in my life.
Wonderfully Gifted Band, that were very underrated.. the voice of FISH and guitar of Rothery were a match made in heaven.. many an hour spent listening
What an awesome album, you have to listen to the whole thing, one song just won't do, the way its woven together is amazing. And Fish's words are so descriptive, the words themselves are worthy of awards, combined with the music, theme, and concept, its easily one of the top 5 albums of all time. Other than dark side of the moon, or the wall, there is no other album that has combination of poetry and excellent song writing.
The Who, 'Quadrophenia', is my favorite themed record. It's their masterpiece. A lyric from, "Love, Reign O'er Me", is referenced on 'Misplaced Childhood'.
There are lots of albums that are as good as this…… but yes it is a masterpiece I agree and it started the WHOLE thing for me. Became obsessed with Prog in general and also playing guitar, keys and drums, songwriting, producing, live sound….joined bands, did a music degree, still trying to have a music career lol
Try Trick of the Tail by genesis and “the tide, the thief and rivers end” by caligulas horse, becoming a jackal by villagers, kites by mew, the wake, ever, subterranea, seventh house and Resistance by IQ, Images and Words by Dream Theater……..

It was a long hard journey....now finally I am at home... found the love of my life. But at that long way it was this music that always gave me love and faith. Thank you Marillion
Bought this when it was released, still listen to the album at least once a week, has any album ever touched as many...Misplaced Children ?????? as awesome today as it was then. Thanks Marillion......
My oldest friend was a huge fan of this band back in the day. Me, not so much. However - since John Wetton's passing, I've been bouncing around through the Prog Rock bands. Finally found my way here. Listening with new ears tonight.
I was a boy when this came out and I thought how lucky I was to be brought up in an age where music was played by real musicians and artists, you can't compare generations but you'd have to say today is utter garbage where hype and style is more important than substance...will they be listening to Adele/Mumford in 25 years...hardly..that tells you where we are at with musical progression..the way this blends from Kayleigh to Lavender is truly poetic and sad..a lost childhood nevermind misplaced
True. What they are doing today is kind of garbage eaten by consumer society. Consume all this garbage and shut up.This is what they expect us to do. Eat, sleep, don't think and forget.
You are right, but only in part. Today's people are simply not capable of doing true emotional masterpieces of art anymore, because they have devolved mentally too much and are too superficial now and because cultures have declined and living environments and lives of people have become too purified and monotone, so to speak. Man this album brings back so many memories from my childhood; going on road trips with mum and dad in the car, this on the stereo and me in the back seat with my tiny little mind blown. Amazing album and one of the top 5 original rock albums of all time for me

This is pure poetry with GREAT music... OMG. I was first introduced to Marillion when my cousin bought the first CD kit with BOSE speakers. Great memory, great band...
Yes, it was oddly and beautifully "retro" already when it came out, and called back to some of the most intelligent and rewarding music of the 20th century, IMO. Clutching at Straws was also a highlight, and I'd say both have aged well.
This is THE music of my youth. I was 18 and oh man this is music as it should be !! For me the BEST album , even better as joshua tree from U2..... love you FISH....even 29 years later !!!!
This album would roll and roll in my tape deck many many years ago 1985/1986 stoned on afghani black ( like fucking proper red eyed not spit shit stoned ) and this would take me there ( wherever there is or was ) and I loved it more than life itself , but always and always no1 for me was and still is PINK FLOYD ....... BUT STILL LOVE MARILLION ...
This is, by far, one of the best complete albums ever recorded...I was introduced to Marillion by my girlfriend in 1988 - Misplaced Childhood. I have then introduced Marillion to everyone that I’ve met that has a musical ear. Thank you to Chris (the girlfriend) for the introduction. Thank you to Marillion (Fish and Hogarth) for continuing to produce some of the best music ever!!! Lastly, thanks for posting the whole of Misplaced Childhood here...
This is an epic album. No one makes music like this anymore. Still my favorite album after 30+ years and thousands of albums listened to. Thanks for sharing.
I know not of another lyricist that can evoke the imagery that Fish does. "Vodka intimate, an affair with isolation in a blackheath cell"...."Then I saw the children, they were running through the rainbows, they were singing a song for you, oh it seem to be a song for you, the one I wanted to write for you"...."And the whiskey sweat lies like discarded armor on an unmade bed"... I could go on and on, in fact he is more than lyricist, but poet.
Where have all our days gone since Misplaced Childhood appeared in our lives? I am pretty sure that our magpie in that rainbow has collected them to preserve our memories of this great and timeless record.
I was living in Germany when this came out, so I got lucky to see them with Fish live. Best memory, met a Dream-Theatre-obsessed drummer, he tried to snow me with his expertise of non-mainstream music, but he didn't know about Marillion. Then it was "how did you know that was 'Vulture Culture'?" I had every album Alan Parson ever made by that point. Lol.
Lavender Lyrics : I was walking in the park Dreaming of a spark, When I heard the sprinklers whisper, shimmer In the haze of summer lawns, Then I heard the children singing, They were running through the rainbows. They were singing a song for you. Well it seemed to be a song for you, The one I wanted to write for you, for you, you. Lavenders blue, dilly dilly, lavenders green When I am King, dilly dilly, you will be Queen. A penny for your thoughts my dear A penny for your thoughts my dear I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love. Lavenders green, dilly dilly, lavenders blue When you love me, dilly dilly, I will love you. A penny for your thoughts my dear A penny for your thoughts my dear I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love. Lavender dreams, dilly dilly, lavenders true When you missed me, dilly dilly, I did miss you. A penny for your thoughts my dear A penny for your thoughts my dear I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love For your love... For your love... For your love. Oh, I gotta go back to you, gotta find my way back to you. For your love... For your love... For your love. I'm always walking in the park Always dreaming of a spark, from you.
One of the best most under rated albums ever.....I had this on cassette & every song blends seamlessly together....I never understood why Kaleigh was the only song that got air play when this whole album is so awesome....I don't have enough good words to say about this incredible music.
Omi LN ohlala ce que tu rates je dirais ! J'ai 23 ans et cet album marque mon enfance (5-6ans) et j'écoute toujours malgré que je suis plus hip hop années 90 maintenant
I listened to this album today, after several years without hearing it. It's just amazing, it hasn't lost its emotional power after 25 years! I was so young when my father listened to this, I heard it again and again and again. I couldn't even understand the lyrics, but the music is pure emotion, the melancholic parts are just amazing. This is why people like me love Music in the first place...
37 years listening to it. Greetings from Brazil.

Well Jamie you’re 25-26 now are you still listening.
My favorite Marillion album. First heard it in 1987 on magic mushrooms on my walkman. Beautiful.
After years this is still insanely good.
Huddled in the safety of a pseudo silk kimono
Wearing bracelets of smoke, naked of understanding
Nicotine smears, long, long dried tears, invisible tears
Safe in my own words, learning from my own words
Cruel joke, cruel joke
Huddled in the safety of a pseudo silk kimono
A morning mare rides, in the starless shutters of my eyes
The spirit of a misplaced childhood is rising to speak his mind
To this orphan of heartbreak, disillusioned and scarred
A refugee, refugee.
Beautiful!

Ich habe Marillion live in Ostberlin (1988) erlebt. eines der besten Konzerte, die ich je gesehen habe.
My husband introduced me to this album..Never looked back..Bring's tears to my eyes xx
Adoro! Minha canção predileta ainda é "Easter". Ao contrário de muitos fãs, a voz de Hogarth ainda me toca mais!
This record is the soundtrack of my life. I've been listening to it since 1986, and still find it awesome...
LOVE IT!!! Is one of my favorite Albums!!!
Very disciplined and melodic guitar work by Steve Rothery.
Wonderfully Gifted Band, that were very underrated.. the voice of FISH and guitar of Rothery were a match made in heaven.. many an hour spent listening

This was my Father's favorite band. I still love the music to this day. I am now 41.
I've studied music at college for 12 years and the exact musical term to describe Lavender's theme is "Nailing it"
My oldest friend was a huge fan of this band back in the day. Me, not so much. However - since John Wetton's passing, I've been bouncing around through the Prog Rock bands. Finally found my way here. Listening with new ears tonight.
I was 14years old when I saw marillion live at Southampton and still listening at 49.
Masterpiece

True. What they are doing today is kind of garbage eaten by consumer society. Consume all this garbage and shut up.This is what they expect us to do. Eat, sleep, don't think and forget.
I had enough of Mumford second album. Every song the same.
You are right, but only in part. Marcus Maher I totally agree, in this period music is at its lowest level ever, almost everywhere. My country (Italy) is one of the Father of Music, but we had our last wonderful time during the '70s, with a gigantic Progressive Rock scene, only Great Britain could beat us. And, for my own feeling: Marillion was one of the best pro-rock band. Bless them for what they bring to my youth.
Beautiful music ❤
One of my absolute favorite albums. :-)
Best album all time.
This is pure poetry with GREAT music... OMG. I was first introduced to Marillion when my cousin bought the first CD kit with BOSE speakers. Great memory, great band...
When I heard this in '85 I thought Peter Gabriel re-joined Genesis. A very 70's prog-rock feel.
Yes, it was oddly and beautifully "retro" already when it came out, and called back to some of the most intelligent and rewarding music of the 20th century, IMO. Clutching at Straws was also a highlight, and I'd say both have aged well.
This transports me to a time and place far, far away-- I'm still the child!
Thank you for the beautiful fish and marillion times. many memories come in hear this fantastic music! THANK YOU!
this is the band that makes me clasp my head phones to my ears so i dont miss a note/riff/beat and i love that about them
This is THE music of my youth. I was 18 and oh man this is music as it should be !!

Steve Rothery’s guitar is perfect on this track! Just like every other one🤘
i love the way one song flows into the next...brilliant music
Yes, yes, Punch and Judy, Garden Party, Torch Song, Every LP beautiful and personal. My favorite changes constantly.
Patrick Mc Mahon Definitely. L.S.D had something to do with it as well, it appeared to open up his creativity to an extraordinary degree.
Where have all our days gone since Misplaced Childhood appeared in our lives? I am pretty sure that our magpie in that rainbow has collected them to preserve our memories of this great and timeless record.
ça faisait un bail que je n'avais plus écouté Marillion, quel plaisir de passer par ici...

Marillion at their Peak!
So damn right!
Every song is excellent!
I still love it after all these years.
this has to be the best album over the last 30yrs of music .
I am so glad someone put this up~what a great record!

Lavender Lyrics :
I was walking in the park
Dreaming of a spark,
When I heard the sprinklers whisper, shimmer
In the haze of summer lawns,
Then I heard the children singing,
They were running through the rainbows.
They were singing a song for you.
Well it seemed to be a song for you,
The one I wanted to write for you, for you, you.
Lavenders blue, dilly dilly, lavenders green
When I am King, dilly dilly, you will be Queen.
A penny for your thoughts my dear
A penny for your thoughts my dear
I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love.
Lavenders green, dilly dilly, lavenders blue
When you love me, dilly dilly, I will love you.
A penny for your thoughts my dear
A penny for your thoughts my dear
I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love.
Lavender dreams, dilly dilly, lavenders true
When you missed me, dilly dilly, I did miss you.
A penny for your thoughts my dear
A penny for your thoughts my dear
I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love
For your love... For your love... For your love.
Oh, I gotta go back to you, gotta find my way back to you.
For your love... For your love... For your love.
I'm always walking in the park
Always dreaming of a spark, from you.
Thanks for Lyrics
