There's more to it. He wanted the genocide cuz he had to save eldia, cuz he had to save his most important people in the world (his friends), he had to complete the selfish dream (Armin's book view about the world), ending the curse of titans.
If he only wanted revenge as you are talking about, it takes out a lot of his characterization. Also, doing 100% genocide does not take out the curse of the titans. Notably and how I think it's meant to be interpreted, because the paths exist outside of normal time, Ymir working tirelessly to create the bodies of the titans out of sand may seem like a possible feat, though I'm pretty sure there's been so many pure, nine, and especially wall titans that she had to handmake with sand, and apparently with just one wood bucket not very efficiently... She's probably existed outside of time or reality for an unfathomable amount of time building what is effectively quadruple extra large sandmen with just a bucket.

See, here is the thing, and my personal headcannon is that Ymir is the mastermind all along and not Eren.
Ymir created Eren/Attack Titan, they are the embodiment of Ymir's will to be FREE, that's why the Attack Titan has always fought for freedom and has always opposed the Founding Titan(based on what Kruger said).
Ymir created Eren as someone who would free her from her servitude and slavery, that's why the title of the first episode is "To you from 2000 years" and the revelation episode which was titled "From you 2000 years ago" or something.
It has always been Ymir "controlling" Eren, or atleast made him be obsessed with freedom so that she can free herself.

    • @vuelle9816
      @vuelle9816 Год назад +26

I half-believe that. The parts of that that are canon are that
      A. Eren did in fact get that dream from Yimir in episode 1
      B. Yimir wanted Eren to come.
But other than that we can’t be sure of anything that Yimir engaged in. Eren gave himself the dreams of freedom. Yimir can’t create humans, and Mikasa had an impact on Eren, one which Yimir can’t change on Mikasa because she is not fully eldian. Same with Levi.

The REAL reason Eren started the rumbling is because you can't change the past. He has memories of events that are about to come and he knows for sure he can't change a thing.
That's why he was laughing when Sasha died. At that point he figured out that FUTURE is unravelling in front of his eyes and all events are fixed and they cannot be changed.
Also, I do believe that Ymir wanted for someone, anyone to free her and after so many centuries, events had to play out in exact manner so that one that HAS founding Titan is NOT of Royal blood hence he's not affected by King's will. This allowed for rumbling to happen and with Rumbling, with all enemies of Eldia destroyed, Ymir will finally be FREE.

That’s my exact thought. It’s not that eren wants do any of this. He is just a vessel for Ymir’s will. A young individual with the deep, and agressive, longing for freedom. Much like the Royal family gains the will of the 145th king, eren gained the will of Ymir. An example is when he saved that young boy, even though he knew it wouldn’t have mattered, because he would kill him later. He tried to go against the will of Ymir, but still saved him anyways. He cried apologetically.
Eren isn’t the villain. He’s the pawn of a much larger god like entity.

I believe the reason she did the things she did, like staying under his services after obtaining titan powers, is because much like Eren she had received visions from the future telling her what must be done to achieve what she wants, hence(not to downplay what she went through)her blank expression on her face throughout the flashbacks that is similar to s4 Erens expression. That would explain why she died after taking that spear, as she didn't have anything to live for after setting up the titan lineage, and she moved on to the coordinate to carry it all out. If we are to assume the 9 represent aspects of Ymir, like the cart representing her being a slave, or the warhammer her being a creator and destroyer, then the attack titan could represent her drive for freedom and revenge against not just her oppressors, but also the people who complied and betrayed her. This would explain why she seemed to instantly ditch the orders of a royal once Eren proposed the rumbling to her, as she never really was under the royals control, she was just playing along to the plan that was set in motion all that time ago(or that just was), much like Eren being a slave to himself

No, they didn't. Nobody besides the Tybur family even knew there were Paradiseans in the crowd. There is no peace to be made, if nobody knows who you are. This was basically Eren giving the people of Marley a one-sided ultimatum, never telling them about it, and then murdering everyone who had nothing to do with anything.
And before you say "Well, he can't just stop, because nations will retaliate", RETALIATE WITH WHAT??? Every military in the world was destroyed in 30 seconds, and Eren can do it as many times as necessary. This also comes with a fundamental misunderstanding of how nations actually work. Upon seeing the fact that EVERY COMBINED MILITARY IN THE WORLD WAS DESTROYED IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, 90% of nations would surrender. If a nation doesn't, he can crush them, but there's no need to go as far as Eren did.

"But we see in the final extra chapter that the outside-world is bombing Paradis, so Eren was totally justified", If you actually think about it for more than 5 seconds, that's clearly not what happened. Remember the final chapter shows all of the main-characters(which are mostly Paradiseans) working a peaceful relationship with the outside-world, and they're returning the Paradis for audience with the Queen on a PEACE-MISSION. The remaining survivors of the outside were willing to make peace. However, we know that the island is controlled by xenophobic, genocidal Jaegerists, so either Historia refused to make peace, or the Jaegerists became more blood-thirsty, or someone who took the throne after her tried to kill the outside-world again. In other words, given what we see in the final chapters, this levels the blame of the bombing of Paradis ENTIRELY on the Paradiseans.
The Rumbling is also just a supremely stupid strategy as it's presented. It is quite literally the WORST POSSIBLE MOVE Eren can make for a multitude of reasons:
1)It leave the entire outside-world burned and uninhabitable for the foreseeable future if it's successful, which leaves them exactly where they started: Stuck on an island.
2)If there are any surviving volunteers(which we know there are), and we also know there are plenty of Paradiseans who are mad at Eren for destroying their homes and killing/injuring their families when the Rumbling started, so it makes since for them to join teams and create a rebel-group against the Jaegerists, which would spark a Civil-War(and also put his friends in even more danger than if he just did nothing at all). Depending on the outcome of this Civil-War, either Paradis just becomes the new Eldian Empire, ruling and killing with an iron-fist(not very freedom of them), or the status-quo from the outside-world gets brought to the island, and nothing changes.
There were a billion different solutions that didn't require the complete genocide of either side, but "Boo-hoo, the outside world isn't like what I read in a book. Time to destroy everything" and "muh freederm".
TL;DR: No, the Rumbling not only not justified, it's also a stupid strategy.

I honestly love this show. There is no true villain and no true hero. Everyone is just human and doing what humans do: protect the people they love, look after their own interest, and screwing over their enemies. It's nice to see a show that explores the gray morality of humanity. We're so used to reading material that is one sided, there must always be a good guy/good side and their must always be a bad guy/bad side. But nothing in real life is ever that simple, because humans are not simple, and the concept of good and evil arent that simple either

Why is that right or even a debate. Why should the world be wiped out for the sake of a few thousand on an Island? It shouldn't. The world should have wiped out the Eldians as soon as they gained their freedom. Eren wasn't backed into a corner. eren and Zeke manipulated them to get the world to attack Paradis. They exhausted every attempt to change the perception of Eldians on Paradis and make peace. The world was committed to seeing them dead. Were they just supposed to lay down and die? Eren didn’t kill a single Marleyan until they declared war on Paradis. He had to push the rumbling as far as he did because their plan of just destroying the army fleets was insufficient. There is something guys you didn’t pay attention to. Eren at the start of this new episode, when talking to the little kid, he was crying apologizing and blaming himself before anything happens. Before even criticizing eren, think about the idea that there was not an another choice other than the rumbling. He kept the titans powers with his comrades, which means he himself didn’t accept that idea or consider it as an option. He wanted them to stop him at any cost . Eren was just a tool between Ymir’s hands which maybe is controlling him, affecting his thoughts or maybe manipulating him. So depending on his comrades help to stop him was the last card Eren threw before he activates the rumbling, minimizing even a little bit the effects of the rumbling. Eren was always a pawn in this game and the most misunderstood character of all time.

Eren was justified in starting the rumbling. Out of all the available options I think he chose the better one. Atleast better than the Euthanisation plan. Hear me out.
    1) Lifting the curse of Ymir and the hate and titan cycle: I think this is the most important reason why he is justified. Erin empathised with Ymir and wanted to free her from her slavery and end the curse and rid the world of Titan ability. Because Ymir accepted, the hallucigenia was transferred to Erin along with full powers of the founding titan.
    2) Erin didn't take away the Titan power of his friends. If we was a complete maniac then he would have taken away everyone's power so that no one stands in his way. But he allows his friends to keep their powers and in fact invites them to kill him. In a way he became the villain in order for his friends to become the heroes of the world. The remaining world will view the Eldians as their savior and hence after his death, no racism and discrimination. He wanted his friends to stop him and kill the founding Titan and the hallucigenia, which started it all.
Had the world not been as cruel as it is, I think he wouldn't have made the choice. However, because of the racism, discrimination and unforgivingness he had to do it. Will Tybur's declaration of war was the last straw. If Willy had tried negotiating peace then things wouldn't have gone this far. The culture, people, circumstances all contributed to Erin being pushed to the corner. Finally, he will be able to achieve his dream of eradicating the titans, unfortunately his dream will be achieved with his end.
Attack of Titan reminds me of Spiderman's most famous quote - With great power comes great responsibility. Had power been used responsibly without abusing it, things wouldn't have gone far. Human greed got in the way and destroyed it all. King Fritz was where everything started to go wrong. And it needed something radical to reset things. That was brought about by the rumbling.

Which is why the end credits scene is so impactful, we see that as time progresses, the world eventually nukes itself in the end, and a cliffhanger to a potential restart of the Titan/Nuke cycle. Eren had no control whatsoever which is why he apologized to the boy in Marley, he is so out of control, he has to cope with the rumbling by imagining himself as a child flying above the clouds, clouds made of colossal Titan steam. It’s my understanding that it’s supposed to be the source of all life on earth. They never dove into why it transformed ymir into a titan though. But i’m assuming she was tasked with building the titans because she was the first one maybe?

The AOT map isn't just an upside down version of our globe though. It's also mirrored. That's why North and South America are still oriented on the left side. The planet still seems to have the same orientation in relation to its orbit of the sun also. That's why the Island of Paradis has more cultural and climate similarities to areas near real world Germany than real world Madagascar. Paradis would share the same relative latitude and longitude of that area of real world Europe if the planet's orientation were still the same as ours, so their north is also our north. That's what everything seems to point to in my mind anyway...

The AoT world doesn't simply put the South at the top, it's mirrored. If you rotated it so that what we see as North was at the top, it would seem back-to-front (with the Americas in the East and Asia in the West)

    A counter-point on the 2:25 mark
AOT's world map still tracks on how the orientation works. Marley encompasses all of "Africa" in this universe. And it's a map likely drawn by them. And you know how.... *nationally militant* Marley is so it fits with the idea that Marley is on top and center of the world. Which would be upside-dpwn Africa.

Anyone else see the parallels of paradis being Japan and Marley being the US. Nukes being Titans, the church of the wall being proponents of demilitarization. The devastation of Logos and the grape of Nanking?
Its not perfect as all metaphors shouldnt be and its even smart to make it less complex by having Marley stand in for the US and China in different examples so its easier for readers to follow.

Isn't it outstanding that the titans have the appearance of monsters yet the humans on every sight of this story are the ones committing the monstrosities?
Eren failed at being a decent person like everyone before him because he's human and his very humane feelings turned him into a monster. The dicotomy of mankind: be the victim or the perpetrator.

At first I was really confused about the Ending, often did I think that Eldia had gained freedom after Eren's sacrifice. But after careful consideration, Eldia had not gained freedom after all. There still lie some form of conflicts between Eldia and the remaining 20 percent of the population. Through which Eldia have to sought to military power. That eventually means that Erens plan was a failure, or possibly Isayama hadn't presented it to us that well. But in either cases, it is definitely evident that Eren as well wasn't free and had been under the influence of the curse of Ymir ever since he touched Historia's hand. There was a reason why the Attack Titan's secret ability was kept a secret from the Royal Family. Ymir had used Eren as a pawn to manipulate event's in order to free herself, which is once again pretty baseless since Eren's sole 20 seconds of talk was able to free Ymir to what she couldn't do for 2000 years. It was also evident when Eren says that she waited 2000 years for someone. This baseless ending has also ruined the characters of Mikasa who was revealed to be a psychopathic lover towards Eren and was often situated as a scenario of love through which it was seen as similar to Ymir as she was in love with King Fritz, yes a 17 year old girl in love with a king that possibly killed her family, used her as a pawn for military power, cut of her tongue and sexual assaulted her. Mikasas entire character was enhanced to be nothing but a pawn, that was chosen by Ymir. It just pains me to see how 80 percent of the populations memory, past, history and dreams was sacrificed due to Eren's manipulated dream, this man killed 80 percent of human population cause he felt like it. I might as well prefer Eren destroying all of human society and having manipulated the alliances minds to retreat in order for Eldia to finally live in a society without war and conflict. And Eren and Armin having a conversation about Mikasa as the series conclusion really made me pissed. I'm literally just hoping for the AOE Theory to be true. I can't bear to see these fan's defending this ending because it was realistic and that there was no other choice.

      Erens plan wasn't a failure.
He didn't complete his plan lmao, HAD he, It'd have been a success lmao.
But since his plan was stopped, the plan itself didn't fail or succeed, it was only partially inacted, his plan was to wipe out everyone, not.
And "just cause he wanted" no.
He didn't just want to destroy the world lmao.
He was literally saving his people, it's QUITE evident he DIDNT want to do that.
There was literally no other choice BUT to do it, without fucking himself or his people over.
That's erens whole thing and always has been, he'll fight/kill the enemies presented to him, and he'll protect the ones he love (think of when he stabbed this guys who were hunting Asians((Mikasa))
Had he not did the rumbling, the rest of the world would have fucked them over.
If not because of hate, THEn for the rare materials found ONLY in the island which they use to create the ODM gear (ice burst stone) they tried talking it out , they tried for peace , hell even 100% minding their business on the island literally as innocent as can be , Marley STILL came to fuck with them.
No matter WHAT, the island was going to be attacked, and NOT doing the rumbling, meant being sitting ducks for Marley, or the rest of the world.
Erens plan didn't fail, again, it wasn't fully inacted TO fail.
And even tho he couldn't fully complete the plan, it was still a success on a SMALL scale, as he gave his friends safety.
But the rumbling was the only way to save his people, the only way to end that cycle.

Mikasa love for Eren was good hearted it's just that then dynamic between her and Eren was toxic because of the world they lived in constant taking Eren away from her and making Eren run away and ymir sawthat , finally Mikasa overcame that which freed ymir from the curse of the hallucigenia

Yeah, the series makes it pretty clear that despite all each side has done, that's merely an excuse as the act of punishing someone for the actions of someone else is always wrong. As Sasha's adopted younger sister asked Gabi, what did she do to deserve this, what did Sasha do, what did their parents do?
