    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    Hello
    I can't believe my friend and I were with our two dogs hiking a trail in the middle of nowhere, to get to the beach in the middle of nowhere, and who did we run into......YOU!!! Rob, what a one in a million chance of running into each other! The last few years have been difficult for everyone because of covid and how it's affected our lives. I found your channel when my dad was sick and I was helping take care of him. I binge watched your videos and took detailed notes. After my dad passed away I needed to escape and recharge. I pulled out my notes and for the last two summers we have had some great adventures and new memories exploring new areas of Michigan. Thank you!!! P.S. I found 2 Petoskey stones and 1 pudding stone 🙂

      Was that you I met at Bell Bay when I was riding bikes with my son? Those are the best sorts of places to find me, the more remote the better! I'm glad you found a few rocks. I'm really sorry you lost your dad. I miss my dad.

    I loved that part of the state for Rock hunting when I stayed in Rogers city in the fall. There were so many public accesses to beaches along US 23, from Rogers City all the way to Cheboygan. Seagull point park was my favorite. Nothing can beat a sunrise on Lake Huron either. Looks like a great place to go where you are. Thanks for taking us along!

    Great video, I've driven past the fossil park, I don't know how many times, but never stopped to look at it. I had no idea it was set up to actually look through calcite's stones. Thanks for pointing that out, you taught me something about my own town.
    Speaking of Calcite, I found a baseball size boulder of lake tumbled rainbow calcite crystals this year, not far from the lighthouse. I wonder if they ever find the crystals whole in the quarry?
    Lot's and lot's of Rockhounds the last few years in Rogers City. It's great to see so many people out enjoying themselves in our sleepy little town. However, by this time of year they have a lot of the beaches picked fairly clean, we need a Big storm to get stuff stirred up again and then of course spring brings lots of new rocks to start all over with!!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 года назад +1

      I agree that it's great for people to enjoy this hobby, but that also makes it less likely that people will find rocks. Still, look at how many little puddingstones we found in the middle of the summer. There are still some out there.
      If you're ever up in Houghton, visit the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum. That place is incredible, even if you're not really into rocks. They have amazing specimens from all over the world. There's an old quarry near Alpena, called the Paxton Quarry. It's owned by LaFarge and full of water now. I was surprised at some of the things that were found in that quarry and displayed in the museum. I don't remember if there was anything from Calcite, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was.
      The Besser Museum in Alpena has a fossil park too, but the limestone there comes from LaFarge.

Great show, thanks for the effort!

      @@MichiganRocks , the colors are like nothing we’ve found so far down here. Here they are almost all off-white to grey, some parts shining and the rest flat. No brown that I’ve ever seen, and the detail on your specimen was real nice, vivid and deep looking. A keeper for our team.
      We (my 9 year old daughter and I) are going to snorkel in shallow water at the north end of St. Clair, at 8 feet, there are some visible stones so we’ll pull them up for a closer look. My wife and our 5 year old will be our land crew, taking rocks up onto the dock above the seawall for a closer look. Should be fun!

    lol @ 10:36 - "Got your dad shoes on". I remember the days before I got "old" (at least according to my kids) and I thought the same thing abut white New Balance shoes. Now that I am post 40 I just wonder how comfortable they are lol.

      There's a brewery here in Alpena that makes "Dad Shoes IPA". There's a picture of my shoes on the bottle. When I was in school in the 80's, tennis shoes were white. I guess I just stuck with white shoes. I wore Nike Monarchs for years, but they always ended up squeaking really bad, so I switched to New Balance. Steve Jobs always wore white New Balance shoes. I'm an Apple fan and he was a billionaire, so how bad can they be?

    Quick question: Are Nancy's shoes water tennis shoes or just regular tennis shoes that she's wearing in the water? I have been using water "proof" hiking boots and sometimes they're just too bulky. I wondered what I needed to look at when purchasing tennis shoes to wear in the water. Thanks!

    • @MichiganRocks

      They're listed in my Amazon storefront, although I just looked and see that they're currently unavailable. If you look there, though, you might be able to find a newer model. I think they're running shoes that are made for running in the rain. Nancy just wears them as water shoes though and she really likes them.

    Thanks for the great video as usual. I have a question if you can give your input. What do you consider chert and what jasper? When I look them up, it seems that the distinction is that jasper is prettier but they are in the same family. I see you called some yellows chert but reds jasper and was just wondering your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 года назад +1

      I went down a rabbit hole trying answer that question for someone a while ago. The more I read, the more confused I got. One thing that adds a lot to the confusion is whether you're talking to a geologist or a lapidary. There are many, many trade names given to rocks that are incorrect too. For example, Ocean Jasper is actually a type of rhyolite if I remember correctly.
      I was just out rock hunting with two geologists recently who told me that jasper is alway red. I have spent much more time talking with lapidary folks who would tell you that jasper comes in many colors.
      I've decided to just call the brown and gray stuff chert since that's what I see most people calling it. If you want to confuse matters more, throw flint into your research.

    • @tonyhamilton9764
      @tonyhamilton9764 2 года назад

      @@MichiganRocks That sounds about what my searching has found, outside of the red vs other colors, I hadn't heard that, so at least that's something. Unfortunately, I don't have any jasper (or any great rocks) near where I live. So, if I am out on a trip looking and I find something that is jasper like and I like the color, I'm going to go with it, who cares what it is called! I knew you would have info, thanks for replying and the continued great content.

    Here's a hypothetical: can one find a large specimen (like the gowganda tilite at 6:30 ) and legally be able to hull it home? What if someone wants it for their front yard? Can large specimens be collected? Or is part of the BLM rule where one can only take X amount of material that has a weight of Y or less?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 года назад +1

      You can legally take 25 lbs. of rocks per person per year from state land. Most Great Lakes beaches in Michigan are considered state land. The exception is places like Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshores. You can't take any rocks from there.
