You have him miss transformed. In vehical mode the front section bits on the tank are supposed to flipped up.

while my SS DOTM Megatron wasn't that hard to transform back in the day he was no cake walk either. I got him in truck mode right now but I'd have to watch a video if I'm gonna transform him again because I'm fairly sure I've forgotten how! But!!!! EMGO does have a JTI or (Just Transform it!) on RUclips so you could watch it to help out Transformation wise...i know I'll need it sure enough! but as he says "it's your toy display it how you wish"

I have the ride version of this figure and I totally get your frustration. For $50 Hasbro really could have done better
I totally agree. There just needs to be better support when plugging everything together. less rubbery plastic and miniscule tabs.
