This brings back memories. An older lady had a shop in town near my primary (elementary) school. One day I went in with my mom, saw her doing embroidery and said I wanted to learn. She said i could come learn from her each day after school until my mom finished work and stopped by to pick me up. So that's what i did in the evenings after after school- sat in her quiet shop and did stitches like these that she taught me. RIP Mrs. Rattigan!
I'm just starting embroidery and I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video, it's so clear and helpful, not filled with the endless chatter of most "tutorials" that make it overly complicated for no reason
Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I am 75-years-old and completed my first embroidery project (a dresser scarf with a day lily motif) at age 7. That means I've been embroidering for 68 years! When doing the fishbone stitch, I always started at the bottom of the leaf and worked my way up. I have to say that your method of starting at the top and working your way down looks as though it would give a more uniform appearance. I happen to be doing a project right now that requires that stitch and I'm going to switch to doing it your way, to see which I like best. I loved your video because you showed beginners a very nice variety of stitches and presented the lesson without a lot of unnecessary words to go along with the footage. I actually started out looking for a refresher course on the woven rose stitch because it's been years since I used it. I'm so glad I chose your tutorial to view! Thank you for an excellent lesson! I'm off to play with my needle and floss now!
@@lilmiss_jean Thank you, Jean! I believe if you are going to do something, do it with passion, no matter what it is! BTW...I love doing the fishbone stitch from the top down. Thank you, again!!!
@@TisEyerish1 Thank you for good advice. My parents are tailor, my toys is different from other children, needles, yarn, textile and machine. Embroidery is my favorite in my childhood days. God bless and keep safe ☺️
Well you are older just a few years. I am 71 years young and I am getting married to a wonderful man. He was sitting behind me in church. He accepts how I love to worship Jesus. I am learning how to do because I want to make some towels
My grandma passed away last year and I got her old embroidery items…I’m determined to finish her pillow case she had started. Thank you for posting this for people like me ❤
I picked up my first embroidery kit and realized I didn't know how to do any of the stitches it called for. This video was clear and easy and definitely gave me the confidence boost to move forward with my kit. Thank you!

My mother was an upholsterer she worked on everything from museum items to airplanes and boats. She passed away at the age of 45 in 2008 and I was young, still am but I forgot I knew how to do this until I saw this video. I bought myself a kit and that's what I'll be doing tomorrow to celebrate her on mothersday. Thank you🕯️❤️
Yeah my mum was a very talented dressmaker, and did exquisite hand embroidery. She taught me when I was young, and as I grew up, she taught me many skills in sewing and needlework, some of which, like you, I am now dusting off as they have not been used in some time. We lost her just before Mothers Day this year, and in her last days, I made clothes for a bear for her to keep her company when we could not be by her side, and my daughter made it with me, learning the basics of sewing and embroidery as we went. It was such a special gift, as it was not only a special friend for her in those last difficult days, it represented the love of all the family as the bear was taken to all the family to put some love and hugs into before being given to Mum, and it also represented the passing on of Mum's wonderful skills to the next generation. When we gave it to her, she looked up at my daughter and said, "I'm speechless". Love you so much, Mum, and miss you every day, but your legacy lives on.
I learned a couple basic stitches years ago when I made a small kit project. I've been wanting to get back into embroidery, but have been intimidated by all the gorgeous stitches I've been seeing; they look so complicated! I truly think it's made even more lovely in its simplicity. The tutorial aside, this video was mesmerizing and relaxing; I could watch you stitch for hours to this music and not get bored! 💕

You make it seem so simple that I have been inspired to learn. I will buy some embroidery needles, thread, and the frame and try to follow you. I once had all of these things when I was a young girl. Thank you for the lesson.
Me, too! The only thing I ended up doing with the thread was making friendship bracelets! Our girls loved making them & they did them to pass the time on car trips! Now, my granddaughters make them. Maybe, I'll break mine out again!
If you can, watch the video on your TV. Get comfortable in your favorite chair or on your couch and have the remote next to you, so you can go back when you need to see something more than once, or for when you need to pause. Good luck! I hope you're enjoying the learning process!
50 years ago, I had an art teacher in sixth grade who taught us how to do stitchery on burlap. I absolutely loved it and never did anything like it in all those years. Just bought a beginners kit in embroidery and it felt so good to have a needle and yarn in my hand, but needed some instruction. Your video is outstanding thank you so much.
I saw a video about doing embroidery on jackets, and as someone who loves her jackets and sweaters and coats, and also loves incorporating little bits of beauty or references to media that helped me grow into my everyday life, I knew I had to try and learn how to do it. She wasn’t perfect, but she truly loved the people around her and deserved so much more from life. I’m proud to be her granddaughter every day. I cut ties with my father and his family, and when I did, I legally changed my name. I took her first name as my middle name, and her maiden name as my last name. I love you, Grammy. I’ve recently taken up hand sewing because I’m sewing some patches on a jacket, and now I’ve got an itch to learn embroidery too. This is a fantastic introductory video for me because I learn better by just watching and doing things myself. Thank you for this!
Ever since i got into embroidery i love it. I really want to master this. It's been the best therapy for my anxiety. There is such a long history for centuries with this art/craft it's amazing. So much to learn.
I am so grateful to have found this particular video. It's been many years since I last embroidered and couldn't remember some stitches. I didn't want a lot of talk, just a demo, this video hit the spot. Thank you so much for making it easy to relearn
I've recently decided to start learning embroidery, after doing cross-stitch for about 15 years and crochet for 7. I bought a beginner's embroidery kit with all the basics I need and a book that explains the stitches, but I was having some trouble understanding how to make the knots, and the stem stitch didn't make much sense either. This video is exactly what I needed to figure them all out - easy to follow and straight to the point. Thank you!
This is really helpful! I’m 47 and haven’t ever embroidered until now. I’m working on a bunny theme tea towel for Easter. The stitches are basic - back stitch, stem, satin, French knot - but seeing you do them has cleared up a lot of my confusion! The only stitch I was doing correctly before watching this video was the satin stitch. Now they’ll all be right, thanks to you!
I pray that God brings you strength and healing! “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” Matthew 9:35 NIV

I remember doing some of these stitches when I was young but having a video to show each of these stitches is sooo helpful. Thanks to You Tube I can start embroidering again! Thank you so much for sharing so this art can be saved and passed onto generations to come!
I had forgotten all these stitches I did as a child. Too long ago to remember! Maybe I will have a go again if my eyesight allows. Your video was a joy to watch. Thank you ❤
Still find this video mesmerizing and incredibly beautiful. (As i commented a year ago.) I'm doing more embroidery these days, and rewatching this video gives me ideas every time i come back to it.
Brings back memories when my mother use to teach us embroidery in the winter afternoon where she use to weave woollen scarves while we use to sit besides her learning it ! Thanks for the video and reminding the art that's almost forgotten
Thanks for an easy to follow and mellow video. Also, thank you for having a letter "o" that looks like a letter "a". I, apparently, have the humour of a child. I will giggle every time I have use for the long & shart stitch. 🙏 thank you for giving me this gift
Although I have been able to transpose hand and material positions because fifty years or so ago there was no RUclips, I am so glad to see a left handed embroiderer!
It's my first time embroidering and I am so excited for the future. I started by doing a red flower and a light blue leaf on one of my white petticoats. I used woven rose and fish bone stitches for this. The result is not perfect but it is pretty anyway. I feel like dancing with only this petticoat on myself. I am so happy right now and thank you so much for this simple video ❤
Thank you so much! I’m starting off new to this, what a work of art and I can’t wait. My first project is going to be beautiful flowers on an apron for myself!
These are amazing! I'm just getting into stitching again for the first time since 4th grade. I cannot wait to try these! Thank you for such clear instructions :)
Thank you for this, this is exactly what I needed, such a simple and clear way to show us all the different techniques. I'm just starting to learn because I decided I'd like to customize a jean jacket that I have, and I had bought a whole kit thinking it would show me how, but it doesn't have very clear instructions at all. This is MUCH better, and I feel confident now that I'll be able to get started 😊
Natalie, you’ve done it again! Thanks so for branching out, & taking us with you! You enhance my life with ALL your stitching-quilting & embroidery. Blessings!
Thank you so much for this! Great video--clear, simple, excellently paced. The background music is very nice, too; lovely accompaniment yet simple enough so as to not be distracting. I used to do a bit of embroidery when I was younger, but it's been decades, and I decided to start up again and have been looking for helpful resources. Yours is the best basic video I've found so far!
Thank you for this informative and straight forward video. I've just begun my first embroidery last night and this short video might very help me know what I'm doing, Thank you for your time and effort. :)
I’m getting into embroidery and am thinking about turning it into a business, and this video is very helpful! I’m bookmarking this for future use. Thank you!!
I’m in a similar position here! More with making clothing than embroidery, but for a piece I’m making I needed to embroider one part. Good luck to you on your (potential) business!
Wow! I always wanted to learn to embroider. I learned basic cross stitch but need to learn backstitch and french knots amd stuff. I'll be saving this for future references. Thank you! ❤️
I remember being taught the simpler half of these stitches for art class in Primary 3 (we were 9 years old) and the next year, we learnt to do the smocking stitch and made our very own gingham aprons with smocking stitch patterns on them! Thank you for your video!
Thanks for clearing up my very FIRST question in embroidery; what do these stitches look like?! 😳💁🏾 Thanks for this! DEFINITELY saving this as a reference! 🙌🏾
This brings back memories of my childhood, where my late mother was so diligent in embroidering sheets and pillowcases for our family. I miss my mom so much😢
For the rose you must know this: Don't pull the string tightly, just leave it around the circle without tightening, because it wont work if you tighten it!
Thank you for doing this tutorial!! It has been years since I did any embroidery and this has brought back on how to make different stitches. Thanks again!

I had forgotten all these stitches I did as a child. Too long ago to remember! Maybe I will have a go again if my eyesight allows. Your video was a joy to watch. Thank you ❤

Easily the simplest, most thorough, concise and best quality how-to video I think I've ever seen...on any topic! Thank you!
Still find this video mesmerizing and incredibly beautiful. (As i commented a year ago.)
I'm doing more embroidery these days, and rewatching this video gives me ideas every time i come back to it.
Brings back memories when my mother use to teach us embroidery in the winter afternoon where she use to weave woollen scarves while we use to sit besides her learning it ! Thanks for the video and reminding the art that's almost forgotten
Ah, that’s so nice to hear. Xx 💕💕
This embroidery is a wonderful representation of the beauty and intricacy of traditional art forms!
Woww ... I never got a chance of learning these... Thanks for making such a good video.
Thanks for an easy to follow and mellow video.
Also, thank you for having a letter "o" that looks like a letter "a".
I, apparently, have the humour of a child. I will giggle every time I have use for the long & shart stitch. 🙏 thank you for giving me this gift
Just wow, you are so good at this skill. Seeing this I feel relax.
Although I have been able to transpose hand and material positions because fifty years or so ago there was no RUclips, I am so glad to see a left handed embroiderer!
This felt nostalgic! I Remember learning some of these stitching techniques in my high school😁
You are so welcome! 😊
Thank you so much for this relaxing video! And... Bach is the best choice, always!
thank you,I'v been wanting to learn embroidery and my mom bought me a beginner embroidery kit so i'm gonna try today.

Excellent! Thank you.
Thank you. Your video is so clear to see the stitching. I haven't embroidered in over 20 yrs. My memory on it is fuzzy.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! I’m starting off new to this, what a work of art and I can’t wait. My first project is going to be beautiful flowers on an apron for myself!

Thank you so much! I'm just starting with embroidery and stitching so this demonstration is so handy to reference!
Blessings!
Wow, it has been so many years since I've done any of these, what a wonderful refresher course, thank you very much, so glad I found your channel 😀
I glad that you like my work🥰 stay connect 😊

When i was on grade 7 we learn different embroidery and stichest we watch your vid to help us. Your vid is really helpful ❤
Glad it was helpful!, ☺️
I got this video just randomly..but now I'm curious to do my first embroidery after my boards..thankyou dii for this new learning ❤️
Thank you for this informative and straight forward video.
I've just begun my first embroidery last night and this short video might very help me know what I'm doing, Thank you for your time and effort. :)
Молодец!!!

Beautiful work! 🤍

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video.
That was such a joy to watch!
Thanks for clearing up my very FIRST question in embroidery; what do these stitches look like?! 😳💁🏾 Thanks for this! DEFINITELY saving this as a reference! 🙌🏾
Thank you for what you have given us,very clear learning with various names🙏👍

Hey cuz!

This brings back memories of my childhood, where my late mother was so diligent in embroidering sheets and pillowcases for our family. I miss my mom so much😢
For the rose you must know this:
Don't pull the string tightly, just leave it around the circle without tightening, because it wont work if you tighten it!
Thank you for the important tip!
How nicely explained. Extremely USEFUL... thanks a tonne! ❤❤❤
Awesome teaching... Thanks for the video❤
