The idea sounds great. My main grill is a recteq bullseye with Craycort cast iron grates. What I’ve found to work best is an onion cut in half. Really cleans well, adds great flavor & aroma. Plus you can then spray/squirt oil onto it to rub on your grates right before cooking.
I use a wooden scraper from Walmart called “the great scraper”. It starts as a flat end. As you use it, it conforms to the shape of your grill. Been using it for years. The only downside is you can’t really use it for multiple types of grill grates.
Guilty as charged on the cheap bristle grill brush. I use a 6 in 1 paint tool first, the kind with the pointed hook on the end, then the cheap bristle brush for the first sacrificial cleaning, followed by a Weber 3-sided brush. Ingesting one of those brass bristles is obviously no joke. I inspect my grill very closely after cleaning.
Didn't you once rate a grate cleaner where mounted on the end of a handle was balled up aluminum foil (Halo Fork)? I wonder how those two compare. The end of the handle had spikes affixed to hold the balled foiled.
The iron fillings left on the grill can potentially be life threatening. There is possibility that the iron filling gets stuck in the gullet on injestion of food, leading to a trip to Accident and Emergency.

Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback
I use the Citrus safe. Works great no chemicals and the scrub pad really does the job on a cold grill..

Always appreciate your in depth reviews.
Thanks Rob! Appreciate you watching
I’ve tried many brush’s. Especially the “safe” ones. They are all horrible. I now buy the Weber brushes and replace them once a year.
Thanks for Watching!
I have a good stainless steel wire brush I bought at Home Depot years ago that still going strong
Thanks for Watching! Good to know
That’s what I use also. Works great.
$2 puddy knife works too
Thanks for watching
Spend $12 at Walmart and replace the $.97 brush every 30 days. You are good for a year!
Thanks for Watching! I do not trust the grill brush from Walmart, bristles fall off and if not found can end up in your food and be ingested.
Nice review Tom, definitely looks like it will hold up to the test! Cheers 🍻💪✌️
I agree! Thanks for watching
Hi Tom, Would you recommend this over the Chainmail grill brush?
Thanks for watching David! For round bar type grates, yes

Thanks for Watching Paul! You are correct, the ball of foil has a difficult time staying attached to the handle
Nice review Tom👍
Thanks Eric!
It's Tom Horsman, not Tom Thumb.
