- A channel viewer, bosspotato, tries 2.Qe2!? against my French Defense, after which the game flows in to Closed Sicilian waters. My queenside counterplay unfolds in the same vein as Standard Chess #224 ( • Standard Chess #224: s... ), but White defends well. A tricky R+N vs. R+B endgame arises where piece activity and an outside pawn play a critical role.

how do you keep saying "boss potato" without even a slight smirk?
It's 5am in Serbia and I'm still watching chess instead of studying, but still worth it. This is a great channel John.
John:
"My problem is time management. Time management and play in the openings. Time management and openings and calculation in messy positions."
Also strategy, tactics middlegames and endgames? :D
John, what is the FIDE rating of your biceps ?
omg just spilled my coffee
Your videos are a great learning resource, John. Its great to pause the videos and think about what the next move should be before its played by an international master!
very instructive video John! I admire how much you are resourceful in these tricky games.
I'm Big fan from Italy :)
Thanks john for another vid. im crazy for ur vids. Also your climbing the rating ladder, climbing the rating ladder of tactics has helped me a lot.
Especially the archives.
thanks john : )
At the beggining I was like "Yeeey, my favourite opening with black!" and after move two it changed to "Naaaaah, not like this" :D But anyway, great video John, keep up the work! :)
Yeah, it's so ugly when white plays 2. Qe2 or 2. e5 :(
John, you should turn on multiple lines in the local analysis settings -- helpful to let you know what other lines the computer is considering good or if there is only one preferred best line.
Matt Billenstein I'll try to remember to do that!
Good game great analysis, I save the standard videos for when I've got a nice big meal to consume while watching :D Would like to see them more regularly.
Great vid as always, john!
Thanks, Isaac!
That moment you immediately end your date to watch one of John's videos...jk....I have no girlfriend. FeelsBatMan
Oh course you don't have a gf after ending your date like that!
Maybe it's because you're blind as a bat :)
It's funny how almost all my chess friends are single men in their 20 and up xD
It's because we fell in love... with a game. D'oh!
I love your channel man! Keep up the good work! How many GM norms do you have?
Thanks, Michael. I have one GM norm (St. Louis 2013).
You should go get those last two. I'm sure you can do it.
AronWetteryd wow, I think he will now strictly from your advice!
Yeah I'm pretty convincing, ain't I?
Good content john. I started watched all your video for day 1 and its amazing that all those make me increase my chess knowledge thank all lot for ur inputs.
God I love your videos man. Very instructive and entertaining. You should come to Houston!
Great video, John. Thanks as always!
Damn John you've been lifting
Oh God I woke up with a fever but now today might not be so bad :). Thanks John!
I'm running out of standard videos 😣... i hope you keep doing this fantastic work 👏🏆🥇
I really appreciate the way you explained how you transitioned to the endgame.
Great video, Fins. I love learning a bit about positional play through your vids. Tal is entertaining, but my vision isn't there to exploit all that. since I've started to pay attention to positional concepts, I've hit 1800 and climbing on chess.com. So thanks!
Love the video as ever, John. A question - on move 25 do you have Nd3 threatening Bxd4? at around 20.10
edited- I just saw the computer line at the end.. never mind! haha..
I enjoyed watching this game! One question: At around the 35 minute mark you were concerned about moving your rook, why was Ra1+ a bad move to consider?
Great and instructive video!
Thanks, Mark.
Hi. I am girl from Egypt
At 55:30, isn't ignoring black's threat just running into a mate? Rc1+ Bf8 Rc2 and black can play Rb1+? What am I missing?
John, are you planning on doing more collabs with Hutch?
Possibly, but I gotta iron out some audio problems on my end.
what if at 16:38 you had moved rook c3 then after white takes pawn d4 you moved your knight to f5 or d5 double attacking the bishop?
Hey John - thanks for the video. When you talk about pushing pawns on the queenside during this game, what exactly does that achieve? Are you trying to create weaknesses in his structure or is there another reason? I understand prioritizing pushing pawns when you have opposite side castling but don't really understand the point wen you're castled on the same side.
By pushing on the queenside I'm trying to create pawn weaknesses in White's camp and/or open lines for my pieces to infiltrate (e.g. Black's rooks coming to the second rank). With the type of pawn structure here, it isn't feasible for Black to play on the kingside much, but the queenside territory tends to be worth fighting over.
Dan Huet what?
Yes, John! Missed some of that classical time control.
Good post! Particularly like your openness about what you need work on, but that list seems to be getting longer!? So - for time management, I think there's an MBA program for that, isn't there? Some mid-west school mebbe?
;-)
Nice technique!
That is a fantastic username
Hey John, at the analysis board, you might want to change the number of lines the engine shows - at the "Menu" beneath the chess notation, you can select lines 1 to 5. I'd say at least 2 lines?
John I'm a huge fan of your videos. Hoping to play u on lichess sometime. How do i send a challenge to u in lichess site?
John, any feelings on the veresov attack? (d4, Nc3, Bf4) I've been wanting to try it out, Jobava plays it.
Dangerous system in Jobava's hands. If you like it, I'd say try it!
Thanks!!
Still waiting for a Fins Poisoned Pawn Najdorf Special -- totally fits your playing style, right?
In all seriousness though, a Qd6 Scandi would be awesome to see from the most popular proponent of 1.... d5
Great video description
Cutting it close there! But the last moves were crucial.
How do we play you, John? Would be great to do one of these standard games.
At 9:00 either rook to d8 also tactically defends the pawn of c5. not that they're necessarily better moves but jut pointing it out.
31:40 why is Bd6 not considered? Then if Rb7 you play Bxe5 and that passed A pawn is just going to be crushing.
You need to update your computer. You can hear your comp exerting itself throughout your analysis.
This is why I do not go over games with a computer. I do play Fritz now and again but this kind of analysis depresses me. This is so deep that I cannot benefit from it. Still thanks for sharing.
Do you know anyone playing in the National Open?
Termenoil me
which chess game is that plz
John, any chance of playing the French more often?
Chirayu Banga no
16. Nbd2 looks like the losing move. Both players choosing moves I find 2nd or 3rd best. 35. Kg1 also a losing move, right after white finally equalizes. King needs mobility in the endgame. Learned: side providing pressure has better practical chances than side forced to hang on, plus bishop looked stronger than knight - as usual. Very instructive game. If I can stop dropping pieces, my analysis is about 2000.
John Why do i think like a 2000? i always solve the problems(of 0-2500 rating) during the tactics training vids. but.......my rating is 1400???
pls cud anyone tell me why do i think like that.....but i dont follow it in my games?????
Tactics are waaaaay overrated, I'm like, 2400-2500 in them, but only 2000-2100 in lichess standard games.
Tactics are way overrated? I respectfully 100% disagree. Without question from say 1400 up to master level they are the single most important chess skill there is. The reason you are probably not often winning tactically in your games is a combination of not playing good enough positional chess to create favorable tactics and not recognizing that tactics are present in the position.
Fairly sure he meant litterally overrated as in your tactics rating is always higher than your actual one
Hm, not the impression I got by his comment, but hopefully he follows up this thread and clarifies. You might be right, in which case most of my response at least applies to the original post.
Thanks man.
woah ! its wolverine ! lol jk nice beard , keep her growing. :]
18:41 why not Nc2?
thanks alot for the great game yaar joh n sir you are teh best bro best .chess payer and coach also
The legendary Boss Potato.....
please enable more engine lines!!
we need it!!
Was looking forward to a French and the Qe2 .. :(
Interesting that you think your openings are a weakness in your game - is that because they are mostly not heavily theoretical so its harder to get an edge in preparation against good players or are you just bored playing the same ideas over and over?
Steve Veasey he doesn't spend enough time on chessable
John, you has dyed a hair and a beard in foxy red, or it seemed to me? ;)
Nope, I'm all natural :)
And Simon tints it henna, or somthing like that i think)
Masquerade in the chat at the end annoys me. Tries to act high and mighty when checking on his lichess account, he's 400 points lower rated. Know your place.
Respect
Thanks, LochVids
Any1 notice agent Bouncy balls as a spectator

John don't write your opponent name in the title cuz nobody welly care about it we only care about the game.
His opponent would care, imagine if you saw your username on a random video, you could learn so much!
I can't do bosspotato dirty like that!!
