  • @maximosh

    Sure you might manage to find or keep the drivers for a device, but they can also come with their own proprietary software.
    Unfortunately Canon no longer supply new software for my old scanner.. The driver installs just fine, but not the XP software.

    I submitted a comment a few weeks ago about an old HP Envy laptop (2006 I think) which kept shutting off on its own. You were kind enough to respond. However, I have another issue. I disconnected the laptop after your response and (stupidly on my part) forgot to note the sign in pin. I have been trying all day to recover or wipe out the PIN using Ubuntu, trying to access the command prompt using left shift key and "Restart" and most recently uploaded a clean Win 10 ISO. I can get to the list of user names but I can't get the command prompt to clear the user name (in this case the user and local account name is OFFICE LAPTOP). Any ideas or suggestions most appreciated.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  Месяц назад

      @linsqopiring6816 if the driver was working before, even if you overwrote the new one, the old (backed up) one will still work. The important piece here is that you have a working driver for something you might not be able to get down the road 👍

      @oldgamer1330 fair. But I only advertised the program *because* I've used it for years and trust it. If you will notice on my channel, I only recommend products I have personally used and find useful. Also, a PUP is simply "potentially unwanted". Part of that is likely because the program has the ability to edit the system restore function, which is "malware-like". As I tell everyone, even if you don't use it or buy it, at LEAST use it to make a copy of your drivers for potential issues down the road. Then remove it, no harm done and now you have your drivers backed up 👍

      I have used DriverMax for years. It is safe. Is it annoying if you stay with the free version? Yes. But it's malware-free and WILL allow you to back up your drivers as well as find and safely download obscure drivers. If you want to remove it after running it, do that. But the software is fine.

    There is a major bug in the free version. I have Win11 Pro. I boot up PC for the first time of the day, click on one box to update. Then click "download and install". Warning pops up saying only Pro users can d/l more than two a day! What???? I haven't d/l any for the day!!!!!

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  Месяц назад

      I don't think it's a bug. I think if it detects say, 4 driver updates available, it's going to to probably select them all to download. By clicking "download and install", you would then be exceeding the 2 daily updates. Next time, look at the driver update list, select just 2, see if it gives you that issue still. If so, definitely contact the developers for analysis 👍

    I'm re-watching this video (Ya, you do get repeat viewers :-), and it occurred to me this time through. Something that you didn't mention @ 1:12 (and probable have in other video's), is to be extra careful if you go looking for a driver for an old piece of hardware on the Internet. There are a lot of "janky" site offering drivers for old hardware that more often than not give you more than just the driver. The first stop you should make is to the manufacturer of the hardware to see it they still offer drivers for it. Occasionally you might have to contact someone at tech-support and inquire. Case in point, I have a ~9 year old Zotac ID91/92 small form factor PC that Zotac have drivers for but it wasn't obvious where to find them. A quick email to tech-support and they directed me to the appropriate site and voila, back in business. Just a thought (at 4am in the morning :-)

      Ya, I'll stick to my initial red flags. "In exchange for these benefits, you must share with the DriverMax community the drivers already installed on your computer."
      That's a violation of almost every driver's EULA out there. Even if you're using this just to backup your drivers, you are opening your system up to the scheduled task it creates, to scan your drivers, and uploading them to their server. Gee, I wonder why a software's EULA has to deny any damages arising from any accusations made against you for piracy?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  29 дней назад

      DriverMax does not contain a virus, if downloaded from the correct website. MalwareBytes falsely flags it as a PUP, because ANY program that makes changes to Windows on a system level (like any driver update program will do), yes of course it will be looked at as a "potentially unwanted program". TronScript will also be flagged. Any utility that makes system changes will flag any decent antivirus program. DriverMax does not contain a "virus". I have used it for years and trust it.

      And yes, I was brought up on an internet (c1994) where geeks (like myself) gave away their time and knowledge free at 9600 bps dial up. We had real jobs in those days, making real things before cheap shit IT became a commodity, not just talking to a camera in between browsing for other content to relay on and on to fill up the world with endless repetition. Most YT vids are merely words to listen to instead of read, and often just a script read with gratuitous imagery.
      If a channel is monetised (as little as it is) that's where I draw the line with advertising in my face I didn't ask for or need. All unsolicited ads are mind pollution. Making ME SKIP for YOUR INCOME is, in my books, unfriendly.

      There are some bowser extension helping to skip this content (at least on the PC). And there is a video telling us what they are.
      TBF, sponsoring can be tricky, many got hacked when responding to sponsorship offers by scammers. I would expect the PC fixing business feeds the computer guy, that he didn't need sponsorships like these. Aura sounds like a better option though, whereas I see DeleteMe or Incogni as scam themselves. None of these have a reach on the dark web, so claiming they delete you from data brokers, while hackers freely trade with your data on TOR and constantly have a fresh supply from hacked databases worldwide, is a scam IMO. And people pay for it.
