Funny thing:
In the light novel, Nimble, the knight next to Ainz, was absolutely horrified and on the verge of a breakdown after seeing 70,000 people dying instantly and the Dark Young being summoned. He actually went through an existential crisis, considering how pointless his pride in being named one of the 4 greatest knights in the Empire was when compared to Ainz's power. He was about to cry from terror and laugh from insanity.
But Ainz thought he was just really excited to see the spell since it was one of the most popular ones from the game because of how impressive and flashy it looked. He thought Nimble was laughing and tearing up because he was really thrilled at how the spell was cast and thought his congratulations was genuine and not something he said out of fear.

Yeah Nimble has got some serious mental fortitude.
Whereas(in the novels) there were actually a handful of soldiers that had stayed behind. They had completely lost any sense of rationality, and some had fallen onto knees in reverence at the incomprehensible force before them.
Like how fanatics stand in the wake of a natural disaster in awe of an irresistible power.

So, for those of you wondering, Ainz has, single-handedly, killed over 180,000 people in this episode:
70,000 in the initial attack
Over 110,000 in "The Splat"
3/4ths of Re-Estize's "army" and since said army was made out of farmers, laborers, artisans (commoners), the entire working force of the Kingdom is dead, not to mention the nobles, so the whole country is on it's dying breaths at this point.
Would you say it’s a better experience reading the manga or watching the show?

Fun fact: when Ainz is departing on his goat, the knight asks him:
"Didn't you killed enought? Are you a demon?"
But Ainz considered it a honest mistake:
"I'm not a demon, I'm a undead."
That scared the knight even more, because while demons are up to mischievous or dark plans, undeads just want to kill every living thing. So his head just went "there will be NEVER enough killing."

"The soldiers of the Royal Army raised countless spears in trembling hands. But what use were they against the massive, solid bodies of the Dark Young? The spears snapped like toothpicks without so much as scratching the Dark Young.
The massive bodies of the Dark Young trampled the Royal Army underfoot.
Splinters from countless shattered spears flew through the air.
Although they crushed the meaningless resistance that did not even count as resistance, the Dark Young of the Black Goat were merciful in their own way.
There was no pain.
There was no time for their victims to feel pain before they were squashed flat under the titanic weight of the Dark Young’s charge.
The spear-wielding soldiers did not even have time to realize that the pikes they were holding had been pulverized by those massive bodies. All they saw were black shadows falling over them.
They screamed and they screamed and they screamed.
Gobbets of meat flew through the air. They had not come from just one or two people, but tens, hundreds of victims. They were stamped flat by the enormous hooves, and thrown- no, flung away by the waving tentacles.
Be they patricians or plebeians, now they were all the same chunks of bloody flesh.
Some of them had families in their villages. Some had friends left behind. Some had people waiting for them. Once they were ground into the mud, none of that mattered any more.
The Dark Young treated everyone the same way, bestowing death upon them all.
Surely they must have been satisfied after crushing countless humans underfoot, but they showed no signs of stopping.
The Dark Young began to run.
They ran on. They did not stop while in the midst of the Kingdom’s forces, simply running on.
“Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!”
“Abbaaaaaaahhhhhh!!”
“Stoooooooooooooop!”
“Save meeeeeeeeeee!’
“Noooooooooooooooo!”
“Uwaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!”
The screams rose up every time those gigantic hooves came down. It blended with the sound of humans pulping under the Dark Young’s mighty legs, and the sound as they playfully batted humans away with their tentacles.
A sound which men had never heard before went on and on without end.
Trampled.
What better word was there to describe this scene?
Several people desperately thrust their pikes forward. The Dark Young, whose bodies were massive and who had no intention to evade the attacks, were hit solidly by the points. However, the pikes could not pierce deeply enough to cause harm to their slab-like bodies. They were masses of iron-hard muscle sheathed by thick, rubbery skin.
The Dark Young did not mock their futile resistance, but simply charged forward.
Before the soldiers realized that their fatal resolve was meaningless, the Dark Young had already reached the centermost portion of the Kingdom’s army.
“Run away! Run away!”
They heard the shouts from the distance. In response, all the soldiers began to flee. It was exactly like a swarm of spiders scattering in all directions.
But of course, the Dark Young were much faster than human beings.

This just inspired me to read the novel after long back and forth contemplation
@@NUCL3AR991 honestly it was this episode and then reading that chapter was what made me read the Light Novels and wow, 14 books in I am sooo happy I did! I love the overlord anime but the books are something else & and have been getting better and better with each issue

I feel like there needs to be a What If episode where instead of Ainz attempting to carefully plan everything, he straight up goes to level a city and take it over in like one spell.
He was TECHNICALLY right.... it was just an extreme lowball estimate. cuz yeha he can kill that few with a single spell... one of his weaker 7th or maybe 8th level spells :P
So some food for thought on Ainz's spell
-It's based on the outer god from lovecraftian mythos.
-The lambs are lvl 90+ and are focused on being able to tank hits and hit back in melee so it has no range capabilities (like it needs it)
-The number of lambs is related to the number of sacrifices, so in the game the most people have gotten is around 1-2. So Ainz was excited at now holding the world record and that's why he asked for applause.
Just level 90, not + iirc.
In the novels Ainz made the comment “Given how many were sacrificed, shouldn’t there had been more? I guess five is the limit.” Could you imagine how many of those monsters could’ve appeared if there was no limit and Ainz stood in the middle of that army?
The whole world would’ve surrendered at that point.
i remember 80 whit the specialization in defence ,they are shields ,not many special ability and 0 spell or attack skill,the 6 angel he can summon whit the other super tier are probabily stronger,but less scary,aniway they not much of use,even in side story where he summon them still they are disposed very quickly ,poor guys they have no chance

@@door-to-doorhentaisalesman2978 maybe neither,after all the game was pretty complex,and what use have a super spell which require a great amount of sacrifice if the summon defense-based can be oneshotted at random,aniway is level 80 and been a summon should be weaker than the real mob,so maybe 1 or 2 using a special attack? in particular because the black goat aren't of evil alignament so his holy bonus wouldn't work,aniway they are meat shield,they seem strong only because used against weak individual,but against same level player they wouldn't be able to do enough damage to be a menace
About why the army didn't retreat at once... in the Anime the "goats" are massive and slow, in the novel they are way smaller but SO FAST that not only they reached the army in the blink of an eye, they didn't step on the ground a single time.... only on soldiers.
To quote an entire page of the novel "Splat. Splat. Splat..."

I really wish they went with how they were in the novel instead of making them all big and shit. Animation probably would've costed more and they were probably low on budget I'm guessing based off of the mediocre 3d animation this episode.

I honestly wish gazef became ainz's subordinate, gazef would've become such an even greater character, sure it would mean he betrayed his own kingdom and he wouldn't be a true warrior anymore, but I feel like his character was just a little thrown away
Fun fact, in the LN when Young Ones attacked the author just wrote SPLAT at least a 100 time and by the end of it the entire field was covered in what one might want to describe as human "patties"

Ironically, he was sent there to collect information and started a war with a small village. From what it seemed like from his actions. He planned to massacre the village.
I think the “I sense no players” comment wasn’t about the NPCs not beeing human - it was more about “I started casting an OP spell and a player would have tried to stop me already - so there are no players here and I am basicly safe”

The 5 treasures of the Kingdom that Gazef Stronoff was wearing this episode:
1. The Gauntlets of Vitality, that made their user immune to fatigue.
2. The Amulet of Immortality, which constantly regenerated his wounds.
3. The Guardian Armor, made of adamantite and enchanted to ward off critical hits.
4. Razor’s Edge, the sword created and enchanted in pursuit of sharpness, which could slice through armor like the proverbial hot knife through butter.
5. Rigrit's Ring, a ring that temporarily boosts the wearer's abilities by one-two levels when activated. Rigrit is that old lady talking to the dragon in S2E01.

1. It's never specifically mentioned how many levels would increase.
2. That's because there is no concept of "levels" in the New World, and this ring is a native item to this world created by wild magic.
3. The only confirmed effect is if a level 100 Warrior class being uses it, their "level" would go beyond level 100.
Each of those goats were around level 90, so Gazef has got some stones to stand up to one.
In the novel they were not that massive. I think they were only 10 meters tall, but they were so fast and strong that they could chase down the horses and anyone that was struck by a tentacle didn’t even have time to feel pain as their mangled corpses were flung into the air like rag dolls.

Lovecraft used it to name an entity that looks so heinous it would corrupt your mind. Just saying doesnt feel good to be associated with such things.
Although many people hate the CGI of this episode (and the previous one), what bothers me is the total absence of blood, in the novel there is a lot of emphasis on how the entire plain was covered in masses of flesh and blood everywhere. That was certainly a bit disappointing.😒

Also the kingdom: Stand & watch the incoming danger, like a deer in headlights.
To be fair, such a terrifying spectacle would leave most people frozen.
Even the horses(in the novel) were frozen. Like Raeven and his men tried to run as the goats made their stampede, but their mounts were war horses. Meaning they were trained not to run, and to freeze if something frightened them.
The horses were so frightened that no amount of pulling or kicking could make them budge. One of the ex-adventurers had to cast magic to calm them down enough to run.
Y'all survival instinct WAY too weak, I see it in the distance, I'm booking it.

It was described that they couldn't processed what happened to the 70k soldiers... They couldn't believe that a spell like that existed.. next they were also in awe of the black orb that fell from the sky... it's a mix of both curiosity, terror, and denial...
those are literal Lovecraftian horrors, Shub Niggurath ("the goat of the forest with a thousand young"), is often called by cultist in lovecratian lore with the famous frase "Ia! Shub Niggurath!"

I'm really thankful for these. I haven't started S4 yet, and these reactions are helping me remember what I've forgotten.
From what I recall, they're called goats because the god (the one that sounds like the you-know-what word; it's supposed to be like unpronounceable by mortals or something, a name that can't be comprehended) they're children of, some like old god Cthulhu-type bullshit, takes the form of a goat or something like that.
EDIT: It's title "The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young", yes it's Lovecraft, the guy who wrote Cthulhu. Ainz is directly quoting one of his stories with the introduction of the children. His cat was also named something similar that RUclips doesn't like. Whatever you're thinking, you are probably absolutely correct.

The name is most likely inspired by a entity from idle days of the Yann.
Aside from a few cats none of the race or character names in Lovecraft's stories have anything to do with rl races.

it's crazy that Shalltear is the only one from Nazarik we've seen go all out in a fight in 3 seasons. not one of them has had to exert themselves. even for Ainz when fighting Shalltear he was still holding back. I can't even imagine a threat that could bring out the entire tomb. how fitting honestly because they just out here bodying mofo's left and right.

I remember hearing about this in the Light Novel. When those Baby Goats were slaughtering those Soldiers, Even The Empire soldiers were praying for them to survive this nightmare.
Yeah I really liked that line. It was a simple way to turn the soldiers perspective from the "Red vs Blue" of their war to a "Humans vs Monsters".
At the end of the day it was a loss for the human race that so many died and seeing it in such a grand scale was able to change their viewpoints.
Yes they were also praying that the spell didn't really killed the 70k... They were so afraid that they imagined "what if Ainz pointed that spell to the Empire"
A few fun facts:
Those "Baby Goats" are Lv90, and don't possess any special abilities, they're just absurdly tanky.
The chapter in the LN for this had "SPLAT." over and over and over and over.
Total deaths from the spell: 180,000. The first 70k was the tribute itself, the other 110,000 were the casualties afterward.
Let’s not forget the hundreds(if not thousands) of survivors that were so stricken with PTSD that they became catatonic, or had committed suicide. On both the Kingdom’s and Empire’s side.

In the novel,
Ainz brought other undead aside from the Death Knights...they weren't name but the way it was described was that he brought Nazarick Old Guarders riding on an undead horse called a soul eater. Soul eaters are so Op that 3 of them wiped out one demi country before.
Yeah and Ainz had brought about 200 soul eaters and 500 death knights and death warriors(which are the same level as the death knights). It was actually seeing the insane number of soul eaters that first convinced Marquis Raeven’s men that fighting Ainz was a hopeless battle.

the giant goat monsters are level 90. also in vol 1 of overlord ainz said he thought of this as real and not a game. while he doesn't feel anything when they die as a former human he doesn't want to see needless killing of innocents that why ainz had the humans that demiurge captured in season 2 killed without pain.
Also I really hope after seeing momon's role in next episode, they can finally let go of the bad feeling of momon being harmful to Ainz in future.
I love how in other animes, when you see the two characters that you like fight it's goes like:
-Oh this is gonna be an epic fight, it will be awesome, etc.
When they see someone go against Ainz they are like:
-Damn, he's gonna get clapped already?

in the novels the imperial knights watching the carnage full on PRAYED that at least one more of the kingdom soldiers would survive
and when they panicked and ran away 143 of them died because they fell and got trampled by the others, after the battle 3788 asked for retirement, thousands complained of night terrors and there were at least 200 that were mentally unstable

Humans to Ainz isn't like npc's but more like ants or "sheep" if you would. They are inconsequential until they make themselves known. He said it himself, they are like maggots to him.
I really don't understand why people don't get that kind of stuff, it's like they take everything that they've seen and heard and just instantly delete it like Ainz deletes his enemies. :D

Shub-Niggurath is from the writings of author H.P. Lovecraft (the creator of the Cthulhu mythos), it is called 'The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young' & is classified as an Outer God/dess.
I did love this episode but I was always a little disappointed they took out one of my favorite conversations from the novel.
After ainz steps out from behind the death knights the adventurer experts under marquis raeven come to warn him about how strong the undead Ainz commands are
When they see ainz they simply say
““Is he the one who summoned the Soul Eaters? Him? Marquis Raeven, we-”

Also the anime didn't do the novel justice at all this episode, the atmosphere in the novel is described as a creepy place, foggy and with ruins here and there, it's also suppose to be near winter so the sun shouldn't be as bright, the baby goats were also fast as hell, here they made them super slow (cuz cgi) but in the novel it's described as the goats stepping on the soldiers extremely quickly.
Another thing to note, the Marquis Reaven actually survived despite the massive death flags

And lastly the goats killed over 100,000 men by stepping on them, the total number of casualties was like 180,000 if I'm not mistaken.
This is the episode that made me put Ainz as the most powerful isekai'd character in all of anime and while there have been many challengers since this episode I still have him number 1 on my list

He is in fact not. Ainz is a max level character from a relatively balanced game. He has no chance to those who never heard of balance (from the actually good LNs: Reincarnated as a Slime, I'm a Spider, so what, Instant Death Ability).
But yeah, placing the MC as a background evil overlord allows the author to give him relatively more power while keeping the story interesting.

in SS1 Gazef used himself try to save the villagers, but in this ep he willing to sacrifice everyone in the kingdom to stay loyal to the king. I think those armors must have some spells in them to control those use them in order to protect to crown.

So Shub-Niggurath is the is the black goat god of dark fertility in Lovecraft mythos. Whenever she is summoned she always brings with her (or births?) dark spawn who are said to be either goat or lamb like. And the Ia, I am pretty sure, just comes as a "praise" of sorts for the Lovecraft gods, but most specifically Cthulhu. Ia Ia Cthulhu f'thagn.

Because if there is a player that player would've known if that super tier spell is a bad news and will try to interupt the caster before the spell is completed.
