Just so this is clear. The reduction is only applied to the amount of life lost during activation, and not after. Later this video I totally forget about it, but the principles still apply. There’s a claim the firstborn in the deck to untap Rowan if needed.
Oh yeah, Rowan is one of the cards that you see and immediately know nearly everyone is going to build it. I personally look forward to necro-ing myself down to 1, activating Rowan, and staring longingly at the cards in exile after realizing my mistake.
From a more casual viewpoint, Rowan is absolutely absurd with the ability to cast something like Exanguinate for X=30, and you can do it incredibly consistently! If you're paying/losing HUGE amounts of life (10+), you can also use Diabolic Revelation as the worlds most broken tutor! If you've lost 10 life, it's BB to get any 7 cards you want. She's so scary, and honestly the most terrifying part is the sheer consistency of it! A turn 2 Rowan can very easily lead to a T3 win, especially if you have something like Hex Parasite as your life sink. (Also, she makes the cards that are overcosted but make treasures to repay you into rituals with upside!)
I gotta tell you, I have absolutely no interest in cEDH, but I still watch these because I still feel like I can learn how to better sequence and play EDH. So thanks for doing these!
In Izzet, Vadrik has been my go to for cost reduction storm. This gives me similar vibes while being very different. Will try it out in higher power tables I think with those big explosive spells.
@@CeladilI just built a $50 Vadrik deck. It went 2-0 against a pod with a 5k atraxa deck, 1k eldrazi deck and 2 other $500 decks. I was so happy as I’m new to commander.
When I saw Rowan, my mind immediately started whirring. Using things like Eternity Vessel let you drop low, then simply reset while keeping the mana reduction. I'd never even considered Painter's Servant, but oh boy I am now lol
i pulled rowan during prerelease, and even with a ~$35 deck plus card in my collection she's so nutty. its not that uncommon that ill be casting x spells for upwards of 40 playtesting on turn 5
I feel like there are some X spells that could serve as good combo pieces or finishers but make the ad naus a bit less risky / able to go deeper. Something like Fanning the Flames can repeatedly dome people for lots, finale of promise is massive value, consume spirit kills things and gains you life, etc
I actually ended up cutting Gutshot because I don't think this deck will struggle with reducing life by 3, so that card slot can be used for something else. Krrik is kind of interesting.
Also quick question is Sheoldred and wheels viable? Because I'm unsure on the rulings of YOU drawing cards and gaining 2 life will it overly make the effect of Rowan useless?
I considered Sheoldred and might put Sheoldred back. The life gain won't negate the life loss, and some lifegain will be useful to not threaten your life total too much, but I don't want to play wheels here at the moment. Arming blue decks to interact with our deck more is worse than opening up more lines to win when the deck is already loaded with wincons and ways to find them. @@TheRealRonShady1911
I mean you can also run a sheoldred, the apocalypse for the draws because you gaining life back is a separate trigger than losing life. So you don’t really have to go down at all if she’s out. You will generally profit with sheoldred it’s unreal
I have sheoldred in my Rowan deck for this reason due to the massive card draw spells and how good it synergies with the one ring . It’s a backup plan to gain back all the life lost in the turn. Then continue to dominate the board .
This might be a good home for Dance with Calamity. Yet to see it played anywhere. Looks a lot different for 1 Red. Depending on your deck composition. If it’s all high cmc vs x spells. Could be a total dud or the 101st card. 🤷🏻♂️
I pulled two Rowan’s one of each art style from prerelease kit 😂 I play casual commander and have a Greven deck already that’s one of my stronger ones so this’ll be an interesting include
You may be right, I may be crazy, but Rowan just might be the cEDH Eldrazi Commander I'm looking for! But seriously folks, this is the deck Necropotence wants if you're tired of playing OG Zur. I'm only partly joking, could be one part, could be both! But I do like Rowan, and I love that she makes Wheel of Misfortune pop, because that card needed a deck IMHO (I guess it has Greven too?).
also how would you account for her ability in deckbuilding if shes just in the 99? Even in a tymna deck, you cant depend on getting tymna to your second main
Rowan Makes it look easy. I wonder how the Will players feel 😅. I wonder what it would be like to make powerful decks around both that are meant to play against each other. Rowan uses dragons and Demons, Will use’s Sphinxes and angels.
So when you use Rowan’s ability does it reduce by the total amount of life you lost this turn or just the total amount you lost before you before you tapped Rowan?
life lost when the ability resolves. You can tap rowan and then add instant speed life loss effects to the stack or you can lose the life first if you have sorcery speed effects you need to use but then you have to worry about rowan getting removed in response to that before she can use her ability
I don't think this deck needs more reduction. Usually you get to 3 and that's enough and your casting cost chokepoint is the colored pips. Untapping Rowan doesn't help you with that.
I’ve been playing magic for almost 10 years (started around theros block). I wish I could figure out my personal issues with deck construction that can allow me to have more consistency in games. Mathematically I know my win ratio won’t change, I just want to make decks that have the reliability that allow me to effect games and lessen the amount of bricking. Does that make sense?
Strangely enough, my deck gets better with Rowan when my opponents have her out. Phantasmal Image is sometimes just better than Gilded Drake here because most people would suit her up with boots. As such, it’s really just my deck being better by something else being printed.
I have thousand year elixir in this deck but get confused if I tap Rowan and then untap her with thousand year elixir then tap her again . Does the stack double or stay the same ?
Not 100% sure but I’m pretty sure since her cost reduction isn’t mana you spend, orrery doesn’t apply to it. If orrery made spells cost generic that would work but it only effects actual mana you have I believe.
I honestly just hate that they made a sticker card cedh viable i really dont want to have to make this commander :( On another note, looking forward to naming my deck: Rowan, Criminal of War
Idk about cedh level, honestly the rakdos chainer and the new rakdos ob nix are probs way better for storming, also the new will just feels like a harder New heliod
the sheer power of ad naus for 2 mana cant be understated. Rowan obviously needs to prove herself but all the pieces are there for some broken lines and really fast games
Can't wait to get a proxy of this, cause that art is so weak. Seriously, why are so many card's artworks so meh? You'd think with all the hate AI art gets, they'd be trying harder to make stuff that doesn't look like it.

Demons would be great casually. Don't get storm shenanigans tho

Yeah she's really powerful with necropotence
my favorite thing about her is that if you can untap and retap her, the effect will stack
Yah I have a claim the firstborn in there as a way to give haste but also untap
@@RebellSon That's smart. Best case, it's one mana untap and worst case, it's a one mana haste enabler.

no Searing Touch? with a cost reduction 4 and birgi out you go off.
Rowan is solid yes, but here me out: Will turns Healing Salve into a ritual.
And chaplain's blessing is even more cracked 🤣
I’m wondering about the viability of using her in the 99 due to stuff like talismans and crypt helping meet the requirement easily
I wouldn't play her in the 99, it feels too slow for me to take up a deck slot which is different than being in the CZ and recastable.
also how would you account for her ability in deckbuilding if shes just in the 99? Even in a tymna deck, you cant depend on getting tymna to your second main

If you’re already playing a red combo deck you’re probably playing Red Blast/Pyroblast so Painter’s Servant has some additional utility
So when you use Rowan’s ability does it reduce by the total amount of life you lost this turn or just the total amount you lost before you before you tapped Rowan?
I believe the total life you lost before you tapped Rowan. I don't believe the effect increases afterwards as you continue storming off.

Lightning bolt/dual caster/saw in half is infinite bolts
