It’s so silly but I never even considered a second job until I started listening to this show last September. It didn’t even *cross my mind* ! I thought I was just stuck with my main income and that was that. Sometimes you just don’t realise the solution until someone tells it to you. I flung myself outside of my comfort zone immediately and got that second job in less than a week and I’ve been there for 5 months now. Do I want to do the second job? Do I want to finish 8 hours at my main job at 5 PM and then go to my second job at 6 PM to midnight?! HELL NO. But it was the solution. And since then I’ve stormed through Baby Steps 1 and 2 and am now halfway to my 6 month emergency fund. Jade is 100% right, you have to do things you don’t want to do and work hard to achieve the things you want or get yourself out of a situation you don’t want to be in. So frustrating to listen to calls like the military wife because it sounds like some people just want a solution without having to do anything or sacrifice a single thing. If you want it, and I mean truly want it, you’ll do anything. She wasn’t ready at all.

The caller who wants a quick fix to go on WIC is in for a rude awakening. WIC is going to provide very basic food that totals to maybe $50-75 a month. It will not serve her problems long term by any means. If her husband gets off of work at 3:30 someone needs to be working after that.

When considering home ownership, there’s so much more to it than the monthly mortgage payment. You also have property taxes, insurance, and maintenance. I had a friend whose mortgage payment fit within the guidelines, but all the other expenses put it beyond her ability to pay, so she wound up selling the house and going back to renting. If I remember correctly, Dave says the mortgage, taxes, and insurance must all together fall at or below 25% of your monthly income.

For the family that made 36K with the WIC question. The military service sounded like a reservist… so if he is working for the unit, he should be getting paid either RMP, ADOS, or AT. If the unit doesn’t have the funds to pay for his time, then they shouldn’t get the “free” labor.

The WIC-focused military wife call left me confused about what her husband did after he got off work. “Military stuff”? What does that mean? The only thing she shared about it was that it’s unpaid and if it’s unpaid that’s a problem. Also, when he is away on FTX’s for days or weeks at a time, she can drop him off and pick him up when he returns and she is still never without a car. It also sounded like she’ll have a car after 3pm each day so they really can make do with ONE car. Sell the car, wife can work a night job when he gets home OR husband does military stuff that’s PAID. There’s so many hours in their day where they can earn more income.

The take on parenting really got my goat! I’m sorry, if I as a parent, supported you, funded you and bought you CARS! I wouldn’t expect you to whinge if I fell on hard times and asked to borrow $1800. Giving should be reciprocated and there are too many entitled children who could care less about their parent’s well-being. This child should have been proud that he was in a position to help. He only moaned because it was Dad who asked. Us men just need to shut up and carry everybody on our backs and society as a whole doesn’t even appreciate the value of a good, providing father. Look at Father’s Day and the amount of “effort” made. It’s almost ignored wholesale.
So yeah, that one hit home. I will say, 1.8k to repair a watch seems frivolous and I would NEVER ask anybody, let alone my kids for money to do something like that. That was probably a lie and maybe dad is embarrassed.

Sometimes I wonder if people (the WIC call) need to hear the straight-up truth - your household income is poverty level. Her husband was also clearly Guard or Reserve military, so it shouldn’t be bleeding into his week days so much, and if it is, he needs to have a conversation about his dire financial state at home with his leadership team and First Sergeant, so he can focus on income earning and not doing “Patriot Time” (working without compensation).
