As another note, Belle is the only Disney princess with brown hair and brown eyes. I love that she has the most common eye and hair colour, and yet she still manages to be one of the most beautiful. It's like a reassurance that you don't have to have all the conventional marks of beauty to be beautiful, inside and out.

I remember that on VHS, many scenes were much darker than it is now in better quality. Like in the beginning when the father meets the beast, you could hardly see the shape and face clearly. Most some of the silhouette and the eye and mouth. And when Belle ask him to come in the light, that is when you could really see him clearly, when he came out from the shadow. But the shadow was darker etc on VHS.

    • @RazetheAxolotl

YES! I had it on VHS and I remember noticing that difference! He was kept very dark until that moment.

    • @kingandrewcecil348
      @kingandrewcecil348 2 года назад +2

@@RazetheAxolotl Regarding about the Beast's stutter when he asks Belle "You wanna stay in the (dungeon) tower?", it's actually a slip-up that occurred in the recording session which made it into the original theatrical version of the film, which is released on VHS, Laserdisc, and on Disney+ streaming service. This stutter issue is however fixed in the 2002 IMAX Special Edition version of the film released on DVD and Blu-Ray.
And lastly, regarding about the dark, faded colors of the film in the original VHS/Laserdisc version of the film, I think it must've been the result of the transfer being scanned directly from the 35mm film negative instead of using the digital CAPS copies of the film (after all, film negatives stored in the vaults could gather dirt and dust over time, even for a short while), and the 2002 Special Edition version of the film does some minor animation alterations as well as improved color correction to look brighter and more vibrant.

This is why viewing a film like this with other artists is so awesome.
They were on a scheduling crunch because the first director they hired wasted an entire year developing the story in a way that didn't work. Two years left to them instead of the usual three, so every minute of work REALLY counted. That they got an impeccably constructed story, dynamic and accessible staging of scenes, well-integrated music, perfect voice cast, rich background art and (above all) deeply heartfelt character animation *in that time crunch* is a testament to how much they loved what they were doing and yearned to live up to their mentors' legacy.

As an old art student this film is perhaps my third of my faves from the Disney Rennaissance (after Lion King and Hunchback of Notre Dame, both of which I highly reccommend watching ;) )
The one thing I've always loved about this film is not just how the pallette changes but also the settings and art styles change too. At the beginning, the backgrounds in the village are painted in a style reminiscent of french pastoral art, to give her village a wholesome, warm, rustic feel.
Then you see a complete shift whenever there is conflict between characters, whether it's the between Belle and the Beast, or the Beast and Gaston. The the gargoyles and sharp sillhouettes take centre stage as a more realistic baroque art/architecture style takes its place. The lighting too, more stark and dramatic, reminiscent of Late Rennaissance art. (Not to mention the forest has just those classic old school gothic horror movie vibes.)
Following that you get yet another shift to symbolise Belle's and the Beast's growing romance, everything takes on elements from several Post Baroque art styles like the ornate French Rococo decorations in the hallways and with the softer, Neoclassicalicist angels that replace the gargoyles. In my opinion, it's almost as if the art style in the background is reflecting the Beast learning to let go of the past and move forward into the future.
Also shout out to Glen Keane for the fantastic design of the beast. He and James Baxter did some amazing animation on this piece and many others during the 80s and 90s. True animation icons

Something that's worth noting that I don't think many people pick up on is that the story's passage of time is subtly told to us through nature. At the beginning of the movie, all the trees and plants have an autumn palette. By the time Belle arrives at the castle, it starts snowing and all plants lose their leaves, including the ones at the village. When we finally get to the climax of the story, we see thawing snow falling a riverbank as Belle gallops through the woods, all trees regained their leaves. Belle stayed with the Beast throughout the course of winter. That's 3 months.

Random fun fact: if a dramatic statue (often with grimacing faces, or depicting demons) on the outside of a building function to siphon rainwater from the building, they are gargoyles. If they are purely decorative, they are called grotesques or chimera. There were sometimes figures carved or placed in the eaves of buildings in the late medieval to early Renaissance periods that were said to overhear the chatter of those at the tables below, passing on whether the people were polite or gossipers. Hence, eavesdropping. I don't recall what those figures were called, but they also had a distinct name, despite looking similar to grotesques and gargoyles.

I did stained glass for 3 years. I used strips of ace bandages (the kind that like sticks to itself) to wrap around my thumbs and index fingers since those were the fingers that pressed against the glass edge while I was shaping it. It's a very fun and surprisingly relaxing artform. I always loved copper foil even though there are copious amounts of sodering because you can get nice small details unlike the lead came which is very small amounts of sodering but you lose a lot of the detail.

I just want to counter the common prince age issue with my argument that the line in the song "12 years we have been rusted" shouldn't be taken literally, it's just a metaphor for how the staff of the castle haven't served any guests for 12 years but that doesn't mean it was THEN that the curse have happened (it wouldn't make any sense consindering how the prince looked in the stain glass window, plus the portrait that he as The Beast rips, he looks rather an older teen, so couldn't have been a Beast for 12 years). Something else happened during that time, probably the prince's parents died and the sorrow is what made him so mean and unsocial, hence why he didn't invite anyone for dinner at his castle.

Could I recommend a film? I'm sure you get loads of requests but I'd like to see you commenting on the art in "Journey to the West" from 1960 based on the famous 16th century Chinese book of the same name. It's a Japanese film by Toei Company, directed by Taiji Yabushita
and Daisaku Shirakawa. You can find it in Japanese with English subtitles in amazing visual quality here on RUclips, in a video titled "Saiyuuki (1960 Movie)" uploaded by a channel called "CursedAnimes."
It is the story of the monkey king, Sun Wukong, (Or Son Gokuu as the movie calls him on account of that's just what they tend to call the character in Japan) and his ego and nasty attitude got him punished, only to get a chance to redeem himself by helping a monk arrive in India safely.
In 1961 it was dubbed but I recommend you stick to the subtitled Japanese version, as the dub rewrote many many of the scenes, and renamed the entire cast, that version is called "Alakazam the Great", I guess you could watch the dub if you really wanted since you'll be judging the animation more so than anything, but I think you'd like the sub more.
Funnily enough, Shigeru Miyamoto (the creator of Super Mario Bros.) saw this film as a kid, and the main villain ended up giving him the idea for Bowser years later.

Did you know that, in the original story book, the beast is a giant “slimy” salamander type monster?

I used to think of Beauty and the Beast as sort of gushy gushy. My view today, kinda "gushy" but it's definitely not bad, I just think I've always like Snow White and Cinderella way more than this although kudos to Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion for the end title song. Beauty and the Beast nonetheless is a good one for me to analyze both internally and behind the scenes. The lyricist was actually a gay man who had great success with The Little Mermaid, but he was suffering from HIV/AIDS. Howard Ashman did attend a recording session for Be Our Guest, but basically, he was too ill to keep travelling to Burbank, and he was eventually bedbound. Perverse way of dying, losing your vision, and being skin and bone compared to the nostalgia one gets from hearing the song "Belle".

alt ending for the movie that could be easily achievable.
-belles dad follows the good road and never encounters the beasts castle.
-gaston listens for the first time in his life and takes belle to road trip and now belle cant get enough of him.
-everyone but beasts and servants live happily ever after.
    the end.
