Where are you from if I may ask? And what tools do you guys got are they old school tools compared to the new innovative tools that just keep coming one after another every year?
They make duct straps (duct zip ties ) for the flex around the taps . Tape doesn’t do well in places it gets hot and then cold . It will come off eventually.
My company makes us put duct sealer on the inside of the flex AND put duct zip ties on the outside layer .. jealous that this guy only has to put tape haha
we always use zip ties no matter what sometimes put zip screws through the ziptie some inspectors will fail you if they see it because they say it weakens the integrity of the ziptie. if you test out the tape you can pretty much hang on a flex duct with just the plastic shuretape and the mylar will rip before the tape gives way. when it comes down to it there are so many ways to do it. it doesnt make what he did wrong but just another way installers do things. thumbs up on the duct sealer less air leaks mean more CFM throughout the home/business.
In Central Florida we and up north in Baltimore we tape the inner flex to the boot like he did but we panduit (large zip tie) it as well then we panduit the outter insulated jacket and tape the edges of that as well. We use spray glue when needed and always use a squeegee on our tape. It makes a big difference. But this was a really good job he supported everything with the black cloth strap so there’s no stress on the connection, and duct sealing the outside makes it stronger as well. Mastic, Pookie any other names? lol
sliding the duct over the vent/register, then wrapping with foil tape, would it be ok to use a layer of mastic also on the vent, and then slide the duct over it?
I respect that you work by yourself but utilise protective gear and take your time with your workmanship. Great job bro I'm by myself too and respect that you're not taking short cuts👍

You may have a video on this, but i would love to know how you got started. Did you begin by attending a school? did you start with a owner operator? Are you in a union and if so what was your apprenticeship like? How many years have you been doing this and are you an owner operator? I would expect your channel to rapidly grow man, you are very informative and are a natural at talking to the camera. I'm hoping to get into HVAC and your videos are great info for me, it looks very challenging!
Yep down here in FL it’s pretty much all ductboard.. I don’t really care for it, but I don’t have much choice. It’s the standard here ,and what I learned in trade school here. You cant even get metal at the suppliers here unless you special order. Then it’s ridiculously expensive. I kinda wish I would have learned the trade up north. I think their standards are better than here.
Great video. Is it ok to use cold weather foil tape 181A/B to seal around the register where it meets the sheet rock like you’ve shown here? I’m not sure if what you used is considered similar to the foil tape I have that I use with with mastic.
Question sir, what is the name of the expanding foam you used at the end of the insulation sleeve? Would if be ok to use aluminum foil tape instead? I live In california if that matters. Your response would be highly appreciated. I like your work. Very clean and effective.
Different than what we use here in KY. All of our collars have the metal tabs that you reach arm into and fold them inside duct to hold collar in place. Then tape them and can screw them in place as also. Like hole drilling. I always use a flathead and hammer to knock a slit in metal to get snips into.
Do they duct blast where your at? All the mastic. Love the more film like tape for any flex work and ide still throw the straps over the tape. Maybe even on 2nd layer still, even with the spray foam altho that kinda blew my mind and hasta be considered over the top amazing?
Serious question, why do some collars have dampers and some do not? What are the benefits to having a damper on collar? Keep up the videos I’m lovin them
I have high static pressure on a new 3.5 ton heat pump. I know for sure the flex duct is the issue. I have two 12" coming out of the supply in opposite directions. I know I need an 18" for a 3.5 ton heat pump. I did a diagram layout of the duct in the attic. What would happen if I just replace the two 12" to 18"? Ignoring the downstairs, because everything is between the walls. The problem was even worse with an undersized return. The original and only return was a 24x18. The total static pressure on the unit was .9 W.C. I was able to drop the TESP to .66 by making the return 30x24. Since there is so much static pressure and the unit TESP is a .2 and I need an 18" for a 3.5 ton for 1400 CFM. How big does the supply plenum should be and what shape? Should the supply plenum split to 3 18" going out to each of the 3 distribution boxes? Do the other three distribution boxes also need to be larger? Looking at the triangle shaped supply plenum I have very little room up for a rectangle plenum. I think a 3 feet ductboard supply plenum should work. There is a foot from the Air handler to the ceiling and I think 2 feet from the attic floor to the roof. Now I am looking at two types of designs. Design #1 keeps the 18" ducts straight by having a single 18" coming out of the supply and then a distribution box splitting it to three 18". The sides would be coming out straight to the to side boxes and one going to the third box with a slight curve. Design #2 splits to three right at the supply plenum and goes to each box individually, but all three will have a slight curve. I will not be using any metal plenums..... it will be all flex duct and ductboard boxes, because of budget. I am not trying to make a perfect system, but trying to remove the restriction from the 12" undersized ducts installed and replacing the flex duct that was patched with mastic with new ones. Another question about the installation..... I have the flex duct running up and strapped to the roof for support. Since the supply plenum is low to the floor due to the roof..... Can the flex duct be run on the attic floor? Can you tell me which layout makes more sense and less restrictive? Thank you. I noticed that when you were installing the start collar, the manual damper handle is at the top. This is wrong. It should be either at the 3'o-clock or 9'o-clock position.
@@dsprings8565 With supply and return duct and fittings, you always want to minimize airflow system losses. Take your round tap fitting with the manual damper set to the fully open position. Notice that when it is installed a section of the damper extends to inside the trunk line. Visualize inside the trunk line, which position offers the least resistance to airflow. With the damper handle mounted at the 3 or 9 o'clock position, you have only the very thin thickness of the damper metal with air passing across. At 12 or 6 o'clock you have that large flat area of the damper inside the trunk line that air is hitting against. And now it has to make a 90 degree turn into the branch run? Good luck with that.
