It is always easy to criticize when you don't have to identify yourself. There are people that truly 'don't know what they don't know'. As one ages (I'm 70 now) you hopefully will come to the realization that you weren't as smart as you thought you were when you were a youngster. The best advice to give to anyone is "just shut up and play" and enjoy! Remember, "the point of the journey is not to arrive!" A big shout out to the guys from RUSH for that quote!!! Cheers from Canada.

I might not buy a relic necessarily, but in certain situations, I might relic my own guitar projects. Just recently, I rebuilt my MIM Stratocaster that I've had since I was in high school. I repainted it and banged it up a bit to make it look like I had played it since high school, which was a little over 11 years ago. Other than that, I let my guitars age naturally.
That being said, if a relic guitar feels good and I like the look, I may or may not buy it. I'm certainly not opposed to them so long as the guitar really speaks to me.

One similar thing between guitar (or any instrument) and golf is no matter how good you are you never "get there", you can always be better and you are always chasing perfection and trying to better, that's the fun of both, at least for me. Even virtuoso players (most I think) are refining their abilities and practicing every day.

Same with repairing/working on guitars. There’s sometimes you have to break the news to customers that it’s not the guitar that’s the problem, it’s the player. It normally the worst players that expect more “these pickups will make me sound like _____” or “ if I just get these stainless frets I’ll finally play like ______”. They feed off each other and read about gimmicks when they should just be practicing.

But gettign to watch and see different reviews does help a lot to decide if you want to take a chance on something. I also do not use plug in's or a daw for recording anything I use straight condencer mic's so that you get the actual sounds of my amps I am playing through and the guitar or pedal or what ever it is. Which I know is old school but hell I am old school and I prefer it that way over just plugging into my computer and using a daw with every damn amp cab and sound there is loaded in it. I have a lot of hobbies. With each hobby, I go deep down the RUclips rabbit hole. I’m new-ish to guitar, and in my opinion you seem to have more extremes in the community. Really cool, supportive people - but also a vocal minority of trolls who love to tear everyone down no matter what. Thankfully the good seems to outweigh the bad, but there’s a lot of twitchy, cranky trolls in the guitar community. It’s music, people need to relax and support each other.

I believe a lot of the "so and so sucks," comes from the fact that people mistakingly think that what they hear a guitarist plays in whatever band/album they're in is the extent of their abilities. This made clear to me the first time I watched John 5 in a RUclips video. All I know about him prior was that he played with Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, full stop. What I knew about them was that they weren't exactly "guitar solo" bands (full disclosure: I don't think I've heard anything from either that was released after 1999).
When I finally watched him just play on his own, my jaw fell open. I did not expect to hear the insanely elite level playing that I did. Beyond being able to play with such technical proficiency, he could play literally every genre and style with equal ease. This was over a decade ago, and it's STILL my go to example when arguing the point of playing on an album vs playing ability.

The same happened with me, at first I was like you... John 5... yep as far as I knew that guitar guy from Rob Zombie & Marilyn Manson... but when I heard & watched John 5 play he blew what's left of my brains right outta my skull, a real machine of a guitar-killer is John 5 with amazing feel... I concur.

Really it's a change of mindset when thinking about it: to the haters, that is their sport and the negative feedback they get is just like a golf score, except the more the better. It's an individual sport so they can take pride in their accomplishments as being the number one jackass on the comment section with no help from any teammates.

The most important thing is that people have fun playing the guitar or music in general period. That is really what it is all about. If one is critical of other people's playing they should be questioning whether they really enjoy playing themselves because that is what they should be doing instead. Especially if they are playing other people's material as opposed to creating their own.

I think whats happened is that the trolls have been educated (or educated themselves) that just because someone says they don't like something it doesn't mean they are saying it's bad. Which means that they get less cynical than they would which means they don't feel the need to troll.
For me, I'm not a relic guy. I don't connect with it. But you love it? Awesome! Tell me all about why it makes you love your guitar. I want to hear that! And always remember the That Pedal Show catchphrase; "There are no answers, only better questions."

Im more impressed when I see some one using cheap gear and sounding amazing while putting on a great show rather than someone dragging out $50K worth of gear and just standing there. Great ability or not, its a challenge balancing great performance and great ability and also putting out something interesting that people want to see. The people that always say that "they are better than so and so" would never understand the importance of not only being good, but also be someone people want to see. Someone truly talented would never say that they are better than "so and so" because no one wants to see "so and so".

As a total amateur player I could never fathom saying something mean to another guitar player just from a bad JuJu/Karma kinda of thing and they will always be better than me. Just spent the week in Nashville and made sure during the "bucket" rounds to tell the players how much I enjoyed their playing no matter what, and it typically ended up in a fun conversation (guitar related or not). Not that hard to be nice even in an internet muscles society. By the way Jonathan, your buddy at Gibson Garage had nothing but nice things to say about you.....how much did you pay that guy?!?!?! If I was looking for a score card for guitar, Have they recorded an album? Toured? Even if its not my taste they have put themselves out there and done things I will never be able to do. Think of the pressure in a studio . . . or being on stage regularly, this would include all the local musicians who have not had an album or single appear. Applaud the effort and willingness to open yourself up to others. Side bar, I have enjoyed numerous Rig Rundowns, Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert, Peter Frampton, Robin Trower, Tommy Emmanuel and a plethora of others. The common thread, they love music and the giants that walked before them. Check the ego at the door and enjoy the music. Of course now I sound like I am trolling others . . can't win. Guthrie Govan wrapped this up so well in one of his clinics.....All guitarists try to play things as fast as possible so other players will fear them. I think ( as subjective as that is) all guitarists want validation on some level. To that point the idea of "oh I could do that" is the hubris of like I can do this, I can sound like the band I look up too. They miss the years, hours, and weeks of refining a style and sound all their own.

10 golf HC … People don’t realize regarding golf that the guys on the Nike tour or Hooters tour are + 4 HC. Light years better than a scratch club golfer. I think when guitarist say somebody sucks, it means they don’t like them. I don’t like John Mayer at all. But he’s exceptional player. The thing with guitar is technical ability is only half the equation, the rest is emotion and feel and I think that’s what people are referring to when they say someone sucks. People used to say Jerry sucked, he is my hero. So I think that’s the difference.

Maybe call it Paws (like pause to take a break and paws cuz of the bear hug). Hugger gets a fee, user gets encouragement. This may revolutionize guitar education, nay, the world.
