I remember when I bought the Cars debut album. I loved it and still do. I was asked to bring some records to a party and I took this album and Jerry Lee Lewis's Greatest Hits and those two albums wound up being the only records we listened to all night, lol. Let The Good Times Roll.

Totally agree with you about this LP. I first heard it at school the year it came out (78/79) and a classmate had brought it in, with his all in one stereo and that's where I first heard it, especially Let the Good Times Roll, and My Best Friend's Girlfriend and it quickly glommed onto me and I would get it a later and I STILL have my original Electra copy. Not pristine by any means but not thrashed either as I played mine on my all in one of the period (replete with BSR record changer and ceramic cart) and have since picked up a Rega P6 with a much better cart/speakers etc and it still sounds fantastic.
So my faves are I'm in Touch with your World, Moving in Stereo and All Mixed Up but the album holds a deep memory of that summer when I went through an emotional upheaval and those three kind of hit too close to home for several years after that, but thankfully, I can play the entire LP without issue now.
Agree, dry, but rich sounding and tight and for a debut, they were really good, never got Candy-O but do have Hearbeat City from 1984 on vinyl, and got that used many years ago. It has the hit, You Might Think, Drive and I think one other. It's a good LP too. Both were well mastered at their relative time frame of initial release.
Completely agree about Rhino as a reissue label. I have several of their CD's, including the Summer of Protest (all protest songs), and the original 2 LP release of the Summer of Love from 1987 (only vintage Rhino on vinyl I have) and got that brand new in '87. It has a nice remaster of 12:30 (Young Girls Come into the Canyon) by the Mamas and the Papas, way better than an original Dunhill done by Lou Adler.
Anyway, a good look at an album that was, I think ahead of its time in the late 70's.
I have Waiting for Columbus, an original (I thunk) vinyl pressing and agree very good. If you've not seen them live, they are/were fantastic to see live. I also have a "live" to VHS tape where they were on Austin City Limits many moons ago and they did some great tunes then. I need to dig it out and transfer it to digital soon.
If you've not listened to it, I was first introduced to the CD pressing of Let it Roll and several years ago, found a great vinyl pressing of that one, oh so good (but also have a CD copy too, and have had for 30 some years). I was first introduced to Little Feat in the 1990's by a long time buddy of mine.

Rhino really has grown since the 1980s when they were known for reissues of Dr. Dimento, the Turtles and the Monkees. For an all-analog recording on vinyl, $40.00 is very reasonable for the Cars debut. The album is packaged nicely too!

I remember that the songs on this LP segue into each other; when it first came out the record store I was working at got a copy that was meant for radio stations with silence in between each track for easier cueing. Does this copy segue or have silence in between the tracks? Thanks for checking this out.

My original has a non-glossy jacket and the vinyl is worn so I'm looking forward to getting my copy soon. I wouldn’t say it’s dated but in a positive way I’d say it brings me back to a specific time. When that hit it was a unique sound and in that way it will always be a classic.
This was such a huge selling album that getting a well cared for OG isn’t that difficult so I don’t see the appeal to a reissue but in the end if that gets someone to hear it, all is good.

Great Video. I ordered both and should have it by Friday. As for the Car release, it will be my first in my collection as I skipped on the Mofi version. Don’t know why but I did. Direct to consumer tends to keep the prices down, who knows. I am glad Rhino are doing these types of releases my gut feeling is they will release more copies in the future.

The backup vocals on the Cars debut are superb, shining and really outstanding in my opinion. Roy Thomas Baker recorded on his custom built Stephens 40-track machine. Quite special tape machines (no capstan and pinch roller) ! I also compared the Mofi vs German OG. The Mofi is more on the boomy side, depending on your room acoustics. Get then a bass trap in the 2 corners, ha ha😅 or EQ bass. I also like the Mofi, but saying it is better or worse than the OG makes no sense IMO. Nice video, thanks Mazzy !

There is a good deal in "Your ears, your room, your system" as different editions may work better for you than someone else.
The Cars did spend some time in the UK in 1978 and scored a #3 hit with My Best Friends Girl.
As for The Cars S/t I have a Strawberry UK original and the Mofi with the latter being my own preference sounding fantastic on my system with a Ortofon Concorde with 30 fineline stylus so I'll probably pass on this issue.
If anyone didn't get the Mofi, then I'm sure this Rhino will be a great buy for being cut from tape and Kevin Gray does do an excellent job on those projects he masters or it may do for someone who is looking for a upgrade on the regular lp.
Now what I'd like is an upgrade on Panorama.
Thanks for a great video, Mazzy.

given the vast catalog at their disposal, plus the availability of original copies, it could be Rhino wants to showcase their high fidelity capabilities using a title that would be easy to compare with an OG? Not the sole reason perhaps, but maybe one of the reasons.

Adding to the glut of fine vinyl on the market right now, is that now Acoustic Sounds is having a Fire Sale to unload many of their jazz and rock product. Obviously $40 is not the sweet spot for many as there are a shitload of fine recordings by many of the jazz and rock artists that you tout at an incredible discount. The Beatles Let it Be Box $68, the Neil Young archival series at $12 bucks and change and some remarkable jazz stuff that originally available at your sweet spot for 75% off. The reality is that when they can't sell their existing stock they have to sell them at a discount to make way for new product which is an incredible opportunity for the consumer. Just thought that your fans would like to know.

I'd love to get this release but with shipping and customs duty it'll be coming in around €60 which is just not on. Disappointed that Rhino went the direct route with a US only point of sale plus I disagree, $40 is too much money. The sweet spot should be around $30 max. The only reason they're pricing this at $40 is because it's limited, which I also think is unnecessary.

$40 is never the sweet spot for a single LP whether it's mastered by Kevin Grey or anyone. The reason that these releases will never be in your local record store is because they would lose money. That first Cars LP is a great one which I still believe is in print. When I was in Walmart last week they had a twofer Moving in Stereo - The Best of The Cars for $29.99. Now that is what I call the sweet spot. That said, I love your stories.
