    In Filipino culture, honorifics are given to individuals older than one's self. Ate (ah-te) for females and Kuya (koo-yah) for males, they are said before their proper names as a sign of respect. These are used for people that aren't that much older than you, like an older sibling or close friend. It is not to be used to address the elderly or to your older relatives like an aunt or uncle.

    • @joegim7680
      @joegim7680 14 дней назад

      Also used when addressing people you’ve met for the first time even though you might be older as a sign of respect. It also works as a crutch when you forget peoples’ names and you’re embarrassed to ask.

    You and Kurotani are my favorite Bini Reactors. You guys are legit blooms. I just wanted to say thank you for supporting the girls journey. I hope you will see them perform in Germany or anywhere in Europe once they have global concerts. With these talents these girl have, I know it will happen!
    And I think this Pandemic is a blessing in disguise for the girls because without this, they won't have this much time of training and we might not able to see these top notch performances of them. Pandemic might gave these girls worries and uncertainty but they were able to use this time to be better and better each day. Look where all of these hard work and patience brought them. They're now the NATIONS GIRL GROUP. Everything happens for a reason indeed.

  • @marluspandesal
    @marluspandesal 14 дней назад +6

    Filipinos use "Ate" (Ah-teh) for older sister and "Kuya" (Koo-yah) for older brother. We also use them in our friendgroups as a form of kinship. In casual encounters with strangers, when someone calls you "ate" or "kuya" it's a substitute for "ma'am" or "sir" to suggest familiarity or, at the very least, suggest one's openness to become familiar. Hope this helps add some context. Love your RVs to Bini.

    33:52 Maloi speaking in her local accent "Batangueño". At the beginning of her sentence, she said "Are ga" pronounced as Ah-re which means "here it is" which is different from Tagalog word "Ito". Philippines is know to have a lot of dialects. The girls speak different language as they came from different regions of the country:
    Aiah & Colet - Cebuano/Bisaya
    Stacey & Sheena - Ilocano
    Gwen - Bicolano (or Albayanon, a variety of Bicolano dialect spoken in Albay, different from other parts of the BICOL region)
    Maloi - Batangueño (Tagalog but with accent and words different from Tagalog itself)
    Jhoanna - Tagalog
    Mikha - a little bit of Cebuano because she was born in Cebu, but grew up in Manila so she speaks Tagalog (but more comfortable speaking English)
    all of them are English speakers.
    There's a video "Bisaya VS Batanguena with BINI Aiah and BINI Maloi", wherein they teach some local words from their dialect. Unfortunately, the video doesn't have subtitles.

    Btw Pierre, All the Blooms bias is Direk(Director) Lauren Dyogi. Because without him there will never be BINI. Because he fought for the girls to be debuted and push through as the situations were not in their favor because of the covid pandemic and the closing of their tv station ABS-CBN.

    In Filipino culture, using "Ate" and "Kuya". Is a form of honorifics similar to other asian nations such as Japan and Korea (Oppa/Unnie, Oniichan/Nii-chan).
    Filipinos also use this with our own siblings. We do not address our elder siblings using their first names. For filipinos, that is very rude.
    We used to teach little kids to always use "Ate" and "Kuya" even talking to strangers as a form of respect.
    Also in such a way to strangers, you may know or not know their actual age or actual names. It is safe to use "Ate or Kuya" as a form of respect when communicating.
