- Joni and Friends began when, at the age of 17, our founder, Joni Eareckson Tada, took a dive into the Chesapeake Bay, breaking her neck and becoming paralyzed.
For some time after her accident, Joni struggled with depression and wished her life would come to an end. Eventually, she had enough, and crying out to God she asked, "If I can't die, then show me how to live!"
Throughout her recovery Joni was introduced to Christian friends who encouraged her, and she realized that her story could help so many others struggling with disability.
As Joni spoke and wrote about her experience, Joni and Friends began to take shape.
Now, Joni and Friends is a worldwide ministry that has many arms reaching various portions of the disability community.
Retreats & Getaways are an opportunity for families living with disability to receive respite and connect with other families who understand their situation.
Our Wheels for the World program distributes refurbished wheelchairs to people in third world countries who don't have access to medical equipment. Most important, they receive the Gospel and a Bible in their language and are connected with local pastors.
Joni's House provides Christ-centered care year-round to international communities who need it most.

I am not limited by a physical handicap, but I have lived with chronic illnesses since the age of 19 yrs., I just turned 66 yrs. I have used your outlook on life and through your sharing at the difficulty of having to depend on someone else to make every single move for your body, to learn to be grateful for what I am able to do. I am not in physical pain. My body does ache severely at times. When you shared years ago that you learned to be thankful for the hummingbird outside your window, it set my standard for myself. I am thankful that most days I have the energy to take a shower. I am grateful that I can move by body even though I am limited how much I can be up before it starts to ache and hurt. I have learned from you Joni to persevere. To thankful for what I do have and fight to not give into focusing on my limitations and what I don’t have. Thank you.
Thank you for not giving up. Your courage is an example to many. Jesus, great is thy faithfulness morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed your hands have provided...........GOD BLESS

Sorry I would like to make a more "physical" comment but this lady is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.
I don’t know if you’ll see this comment, Joni… but I saw you when I was elementary school age.. not sure exactly, but I know I was very young. I feel like we first saw you at Forest Hill Church, in Charlotte, on park Rd… ?? Do you remember if that’s somewhere you may have gone , probably very late 70,s or very early 80’s?
Wherever it was, You were also with another gentleman that was also in a similar situation as you. I can’t remember what his name was … but I can still picture him.
I’m 52.5 now… so my memory is fuzzy… I just remember my mom loving you so much. I feel like we also went and saw you in a movie? Both my parents have passed and I was thinking about you and decided to look you up. I miss my mom so so so much and lately I’ve been trying to remember things from my childhood, and your name is definitely someone I have memories of.
Maybe I am not right on the location.. it was definitely Charlotte nc… wherever it was, thank you for impacting my mom so much… I truly believe you are part of the reason my mom and dad kept us in church.

I have issues with the way of getting ahold of the people I need to to help them in their mission that was spoken by this angel Joni. I may look normal but I am not and it would be great for someone to utilize me as strategist or some way within my means to help push this. I don’t want what I know to die with me and I’m too damaged to follow thru with making my successes. I just feel like if I owned the boat it would sink lol but I would make a formidable General in Gods of Love.
