Once again (and in combination with last week's video), a great video that addresses the important issue of sustainability. I use an oversized thick towelling dressing gown I picked up from a charity shop for three pounds. It's not waterproof, and only a little bit windproof (and I don't look as trendy as a Dry Robe wearer) but reusing products is always more sustainable than buying new ones.
Glad you enjoyed it. I just felt he lunges coming on so went with it. There's no point in denying yourself, it's like stopping a yawn, you just feel all funny and disappointed! 🏊😃
Most informative and from that list I chose Snugmud ( I've been turning over my pennies for over a year). Clicked to buy and it arrived half an hour later! No joke. The supplier lives nearby in Leicestershire
Great video Rachel!! I love the opening scenery at the beach and the sound of the waves in the background throughout. I must say that your modelling maneuvers, complete with lunges and windmilling arm action, is top quality. I’m still swimming, as the lakes have not yet froze over, but dang it is cool and a changing robe does look warm and practical. Major supply chain issues in BC 🇨🇦 right now (with any and all goods including food and fuel) as unprecedented flooding has washed out every highway entering into Vancouver. The north is completely cut off from the south as a month’s worth of rain fell in 48 hours last weekend. So many people are stranded and/or evacuated. Entire towns are under water. This past summer we hit 50c and were on fire for several months, now it’s extreme weather and flooding. With that said, climate change is at the forefront of every conversation and newscast over here. Sustainability needs to be a the guiding philosophy behind all new necessary purchases. Thanks for showing us these three changing robes and highlighting all the features. Very valuable info and lovely beachy backdrop. I’m looking forward to next week’s video already. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🏊♀️
Hi Mary I hope you are doing ok over there we'rehearing about the flooding in Canada on the news. How are you faring up in the PNW? Stay safe. I'm pleased you enjoyed my foray into modelling, funnily enough I have not heard form any agencies yet. Maybe that's because I've been busy though, I'll check my junk mail. The little wavelets at the start were just so lovely I had to include them. Going to join a group of a Beaver Moon swim this evening 🍑🏊😃
@@EverydayAthleteRach HI Rachel… thanks for your concern. Yes, I am high and dry up here in the PNW but my partner is stuck in Vancouver and we have no idea when he will be able to get back home. Not to be Debby Downer, but the flooding and the mudslides are so bad… worse than one could ever imagine. Entire towns are under water, pumping and waste water treatment systems have failed in many towns, so many people have lost their homes and some have lost their lives. Every major highway and rail line feeding into Vancouver has been destroyed… the north is cut off from the south, the supply chains are really being affected. The hoarding of food and fuel is insane. The entire infrastructure of southern BC has been damaged. There are even photos taken from space posted on the internet showing all the mud flowing into the the Salish Sea (Pacific Ocean). The Military and Federal resources arrived yesterday and recovery efforts for people and agricultural livestock has begun. I live in a big house and because it is remote we are always well stocked with food and supplies… don’t know about fuel though. Also we have wood heat so we are not affected by the natural gas pipeline destruction. We have our winter firewood all cut, split, and stacked in the woodshed. Here it is winter in Canada and so many people have no heat or electricity. I have no idea when my partner will be able to get home… it’s a bummer but I am not complaining. He drove down to Vancouver for some a minor post kidney transplant surgery, and he made it to Vancouver just hours before the Atmospheric River took out all the highways. Thanks for your concern and I’ll keep ya posted. Ⓜ️ary
Very interesting how there are more and more makes of changing robes. Most people (swimmers) in Germany have never heard about them. The sustainability is great of course and it is amazing what useful and stylish things can be made out of plastic bottles, but I would like to join Heather Dougherty in asking: what about the micro plastic? For me that was the deciding factor in getting a bamboo lined smoc smoc last winter. Now I've gone and spoiled it all by buying a long sleeved swimming top made of plastic bottles, though. So, I'm really asking out of concern for the water I swim in.
God choice with the smocsmoc. There are lots of new makers joining the market and offering more choice. I've chosen to highlight the ones which are making robes more sustainably, rather than completely new materials. There is a concern for microfibres, in particular when they are washed in a machine, which should be as infrequently as possible. None of the ones I tried visibly shed on my clothes which was a good sign, and Vivida mentions microfibres in their care instructions suggesting use of a washing bag to catch them www.vividalifestyle.com/products/guppyfriend-washing-bag I may look into a video on microfibres at a later date when I can get some useful information together. 🏊😃
Keep swimming long time !
I've got a Charlie McLeod sustainable dry robe which had those fleece cuffs (though these were longer with a thumb hole too) and I found it really difficult to pull my damp hand through the cuff in order to get changed! I ended up cutting them off. 😁
Thank you very much Meryl, your comment and super thanks made my day. Small RUclipsrs really appreciate this kind of support for what they create. Sorry it took a couple of days to respond ☺🏊😀
Hi Richard I’ve reviewed the Red Original Long Sleeve Pro Change Robe here: gorilla robe vs red original vs sittingsuit ruclips.net/video/Yhuv_hGYYK8/видео.html
Merci and keep swimming free. !
Thanks Rachel and it's good to see plastic being recycled and reused in this way. But is there not an issue with these changing robes shedding microplastics?
The care instructions for Vivida do suggest on the odd occasion that it is washed to put it in a washing bag to catch the fibres: www.vividalifestyle.com/products/guppyfriend-washing-bag None of the ones I tried shed onto my clothes, but it is a concern, most particularly when washing in a machine. Thanks for raising this point. I think there could be a video in this topic maybe.
Thanks the helpful reviews Rachel. From what you’ve used, if you had to choose one for longevity/warmth/storage, what would you pick? Dryrobe brand seems the obvious choice! And my budget doesn’t stretch to the £200 Insulated robe. Thanks!
Brilliant review as always but how do they all work for getting you dry and wicking the absorbed water away? Without that they're just a large, expensive coat aren't they?
Hi Sarah the changing robes work by wicking the moisture away. I never use a towel under mine and I'm dry enough to get my kit on. For the type of place I swim, they have to fit in my towfloat or they are just an expensive car coat. 🏊😃
Attention ⚠️. Keep swimming to you
Hey great vid just a question about the vivida you showed as thinkg of buying one. I'm 6.2 and they say large but that's the size you had any thought on sizing would be great ?
Hi Louis I looked at the internal chest measurement when i sized it. It would be a great length for you maybe to around knee length. Cracking changing robe that’s light as a feather but super warm!
30L I think, but my 28L zone 3 fitted most I tried in it. Just make sure to push the first bit (for me that’s the hood then arms) all the way down 🏊♀️😀
Hi Harry they are groynes and are there to minimise longshore drift where the sand and pebbles get eroded from the beach byt he tide. These ones are the oldest ones on that particular beach and now just look like little rows of teetch, They have been eroded in a pretty funny way and I like to spot the ones which have ended up looking like rude statues!
Hi Rachel, you may have done a video on this already, but I haven't found it. At the moment I am swimming half hour one way along the coast and half hour back, this equates to about 2km. I seem to have reached a bit of a plateau. How do I get from 2km to 10km next year? I am not tired or out of breath at the end of the swims. Is it just a matter of going faster sometimes or further each week? I know you have done 10km swims but I don't know how you got to that distance just having a little swim in the river. Haha. Cheers
Hi John Paul I train in the sea mostly for the outdoor aspect, but not at this time of year. I do fitness and stamina training in the pool and follow the Outdoor Swimming Society’s Dart 10K training plan. I start the plan in April and do some indoor and some outdoor as the water warms up. Most channel swimmers don’t even do serious training in outdoor settings before May. Hope that helps. In the winter I just dip and swoosh for sh*ts and giggles with friends 🏊♀️😀😀
Another sensible video Rach. A lot of questions come up on the swim groups I am a member of to which I always give the same advice...check out Everyday Athlete Rach on yourtube! :-)

Glad it was helpful! Did you manage to settle on the one for you?
I've got a Charlie McLeod sustainable dry robe which had those fleece cuffs (though these were longer with a thumb hole too) and I found it really difficult to pull my damp hand through the cuff in order to get changed! I ended up cutting them off. 😁
Ah, yes, if they were tight I could see that being an issue, but these were pretty loose on my wrist so I don't think it'll be a problem.

I would expect fine - just as well as any other. I rarely wash a changing robe. You can reproduce them with Nikwax if needed too.
For the dryrobe, could you fit the rest of you kit in the swim run towfloat for the size mediums
Certainly not footwear, maybe shorts/T-shirt. I only looked to see if the robes themselves would fit.
