Someone needs to throw you a Audiolab 6000A, or you need to buy one asap. It seems weird to hear all these comparisons and praise for the IOTAVX without the 6000A in the mix
Doesn't the Marantz have tone controls for lows, mids and highs? Man, i hope these "purists" learn their lesson before they run out of business, i.e., put the damn tone controls in the box. We wern't born yesterday (purist! yeah right).

@@mag290 Absolutely agreed with You. If we compare 6000a with iotavx, 6000a is equipped with ess9018 chip and audiolab has the expirience with this chip so I suppose it is well integrated to 6000a. Iotwax internal dac is less quality and doesn t match with amplifier quality. Musical fidelity is without dac, so you have to buy external dac, high quality digital cable ... Right now I prefer either good internal dac or at least good external pre amp with integrated dac instead of external dac.

I owned the Music Fidelity m2si for 6 months now. I LOVE the sound. I seen people with Much more expensive systems that Didn't sound as good as My Music Fidelity m2si. Period..

Great review Sean, thanks. I had a Musical Fidelity X75 a few years ago and you've just described it perfectly. I changed it out for a second hand A308 which has twice the power (150wpc) and which just does more of everything, not unlike the jump to the M6Si. I think it just goes to prove, not only do these amps look fantastic, they will last for years. My amp will be the last component to be upgraded in my system, if ever!
Hello Mark, i'm feeling the same way about my MF m5si integrated amplifier, i'm running this amp for a couple of years now and it drives every speaker i paired with it over the years with ease! I'm currently eyeballing the m6 500i but i'm not sure if it is worth the upgrade for now

Thanks for the great review. I'm in the minority (at least I think I am) in that I prefer a neutral amp. I want any coloration/characteristics to come from my speakers. That way I don't have to worry about pairing/matching. Let the speakers be how they were designed to be. Anyway, wish you good health in 2021 and beyond.
Shouldn't an amp accurately reproduce the source material without distortion and do nothing else. Bass boost, treble roll-off etc. Is a deficiency. Any neutral amp should sound exactly like any other amp according to the laws of physics, right? If you wanted a different/better sound then use tone controls. I don't understand why someone would buy a new amp just to get more warm midrange bass or out- front treble.
How can you chose a neutral amp if your speakers are coloured?

@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt Why not? They are not mutually exclusive. All speakers are designed a certain way. All amps are designed a certain way. I own both warm and bright speakers. I would like them to sound warm or bright. So if I go with something like an iotavx (maybe not best example), the speakers characteristics will remain mostly in how they were meant to sound. I'm not saying you can get a completely neutral amp. But I want to run one with as much neutrality as possible.
I think you nailed it's character. I have owned one for a little more than a year. Beautiful looking piece. Sound is just as you described about being open, dynamic, clean, nuanced and controlled bass. It's the most open sounding integrated I have owned under $1,000. It may just be my system matching or my ears but I do find the treble to be maybe a little sweeter than you describe, meaning it's still well open and airy but it's refined and a touch delicate to me. Agree about its power as well, it is what you would expect a 72 watt amp would sound like in this regard, not more powerful, not wimpier. It's a very solid piece. One reason it sounds so open is it also uses a "laser trimmed attenuator, essentially a very fancy controller incorporating high precision SMD resistors laser trimmed to extraordinarily high tolerances, resulting in a stepped attenuator" that comes from their higher models and that lends to great transparency. I have been so interested to hear your thoughts on this amp since I got it but didn't think that would ever get on your docket. Thanks, Sean!

To get this straight: the M3Si is pretty much different from the m2si.
The M3Si has
- more power output (80WpC)
- a phono stage
- a DAC built in
- a dual mono architecture (I had this confirmed by MF themselves 2 days ago)
I do in fact own an IOTAVX SA3 and auditioned it against the M3SI yesterday. Only thing that was better on the IOTA was details (or transparency). The M3Si is much more muscular, larger sounding, has bigger 3D soundstage. Unfortunately (and this is true for the M2si aswell, but no-one mentions it) the remote control of the MF is a shame. I mean, come on, there is no on/off button on the remote? Why?!

@@crispincrunch2453 this is a common theme on mid-fi gear, unfortunately. For Musical Fidelity, there is no standby funcionality on their range up to the m5si - the m6si does have it. But other brands like Hegel for instance do not have this function either. You'll have to stand up and walk over to the amp to switch it off.
An interesting review, which was kinda unexpected, and also included that unexpected "value" part. You are right; I wouldn't mind buying and trying it for $600 but I was not aware of the so-called deal.

Damn just got my M2SI and just wow! I’ve tried the Yamaha AS1200, ArcamSA20, Marantz Model 40N, Yamaha AS801 and now the MF-M2SI and for the JBL 4309 the MF-M2SI is crowning king for music. Hopefully I helped save someone some time lol.

Hey david a few months ago i scored a musical fidelity m8 encore for $2500. I was looking for a integrated like the m8xi or a nad m33 that never released. I was willing to drop 5g. I found that m8 encore monster for 2.5g. I was stunned at what i got for the price. Its a beast of an amp. It stores all my cds with 2 tb of storage. Its a beast and sounds amazing. I was able to sell all my seperates. Selling my denafrips pontus dac amd sony haps1 cd storage i was able to pay for the unit just by selling those few things. Musical fidelity makes great products at an affordable price. I want to get a gryphon diablo 300 integrated...but i think the m8 encore could take it on amd possibly sound better lol. Its just how us audiophiles are. We're never satisfied. And Musical fidelity has a beast with it's m8 series
After rereading my comment... I used beast alot. Its a powerhouse of an amp! Comgrats on the m8xi. What speakers do you have paired with your m8xi?
I bought those sony cs5 bookshelf speakers on black Friday for $75. Its the ones with the "super tweeter" i am stunned at how good those sound lol. Its the amp at that point!

@@lancekluemper3708 Congrats on your M8 encore. That is a "Beast" of streamer as well. I have the Focal Sopra No 3s as well. Great Combination in my opinion. My DAC is the Atoll DAC300. My streamer is the my weak link but will work for now - Bluesound Node 2I.
Lol your kidding? We have tge same taste in equipmemt and speakers. Great stuff. I uses to own audio research ref 75 amp, ref 5 preamp. Denafrips pontus dac, bluesound node 2 streamer. Dont hate on tge bluesound. Its a great piece of equipment that i refuse to sell. Its got a great app for your streamimg apps to be integrated. The msuical fidelity did well and all of a sudden my Qobuz favorites hasn't updated on the encore. I dont know if i changed the settings or what. The encore runs off Logitech squuezebox apps. Works better than i imagined. But ever since i can't figure out how to update my favorites off qobuz or tidal on my encore. I put my bluesound back into my system. Just for simplicity. The dac on the encore sounds better than the node 2. Granted it is just the original and not the 2i.
I loved my seperates. The amount.of 3d depth i got from the tubes was astonishing. The denafrips did well with making everything sound analog. First time i cranked on the encore i was getting better detail. The dynamic range you get off such a large amplifier is amazimg. From seperates to integrated i can honestly say both equipment has things they excelled in...visa versa. Theres no right answer on which was better because they both sound great. Another thing to keep in mind b4 you go and upgrade your streamer to like a nad m50.2. It has to do on tge service you use. Soo blueosund which can be found on bluesounds obviously and nads which i wanted to buy for a new dedicated streamer will sound the same. If you want something new and better sounding than bluesound. May have to look at like aurender...auralic... Whatever nad uses. You get my drift. Streamers are based in the specific app and not device specific. So just keep this in mind. Good luck

Great review, Sean! Totally agree with everything you said about the M2si. I bought two for $600 each (1 silver, 1 black). I also own an M6si. For me, the key is pairing the M2si with a tube preamp. Even an inexpensive Bellari PA555 ($275) tames the treble nicely and adds some tubey warmth while retaining the clarity and dynamic presentation--this combination puts the M2si into a completely different sound quality category for me and even rivals the M6si at times. With tube preamp, I think the KEF LS50 sounds great with the M2si for an open, clear presentation. For a warmer, richer sound, I have Canton Reference 9.2 DC speakers--fantastic with the M2si, even with no preamp. For $1,275 total ($1000 M2si + $275 PA555), I think this is an amazing value. If there is a better combo for the money, I'd love to learn about it.

@@michaell5189 Good to know, thanks. I have an Audiolab 6000 CDT with a Musical Fidelity V-90 DAC and a Yamaha T-1000 Tuner for sources with a pair of ESS RM II -6" speakers. To be honest to my ears it all sounds tremendous. I must say the Bellari has piqued my interest.
A few months ago i scored a musical fidelity m8 encore 500 for $2500. I love the sound! I have them paired up to some focal spora 3s. Great speakers... Great amp!
I have one of these. Paired up with my ESS RM-II 6" speakers and could not be happier with my purchase. It's a big step up from my NAD C340 and Klipsch KSB 3.1 speakers. @ Zero Fidelity, I would love to see a review of the ESS RM-II speakers.

Other than the A100, they have all been very durable.

Sean, great review. Wonderful insight into the sound of the M2si and related equipment. The speakers I'd be using would be Thiel 1.5. I've been using a Cayin integrated 30 watt tube amp for over 10 years....I think the Thiel and M2si will sound great. I LOVE listening to music and hearing little details I hadn't heard before. I really like your videos, please keep up with the great reviews :-D. I understand what you say about the M2SI, has I have a M3S that plays exactly has you have described (not shore if it is the same machine with a bit less power 76w @8ohms vs 72w @8ohms) It is a great amp and I love it for what it does.
When you compare the MF and the Marantz, I think both machines are not at the same level - Take for instance the PM8006 has a Frequency Response from 5Hz to 100KHz while the specified MF M2SI only goes from 20Hz to 20KHz. Nowadays, many small cost speakers already go up to 25KHz or more, so they are able to give you more air, space stage, stage depth etc... If the amp does not play in does frequencies then it is a "bottleneck" on the system. Its hard & costly to build amps with large bandwidth, but with the right rig it adds so much.
I recently started using the M5si which is150w per channel version to power some B&W 600 series and they sound so much better than I thought possible. Sort of has me re-thinking the advice that many give to spend more of one's budget on speakers.
After all this time I have learned to value your judgment. And that's why I decided to get the Luxman. Ok that's I lie I got a Pass Labs INT-150!

I like underwhelming when it comes to features. To me that is what high end should be.
Exactly, add your own dacs, TT, disc players, etc.
Though there is also something to be said for the synergy of features provided within a multifunction integrated. You can pretty much rest assured that all of those parts were designed to work well together, and ultimately will. There's no need for system matching as far as those particular elements are concerned. We no longer live in the glory days of hi-fi retail, when you could find a shop around every corner and evaluate their toys.
All preferences are valid. It's whatever floats our boats.
Comparison - so here's another unit that should align with Rotel A11 Tribute & Audiolab 6000A. Apart from the lack of a phono connection (available on the M3si + models) the comparison of the A11, 6000A and M2si would help understand the nuances of similar goal striving integrated amplifiers of similar cost.

Hello, thank you for work. Well, as I told you previously, I got Cambridge cxa81 and Audiolab6000a. I have just given back the Cambridge cxa81. It is not "bypass" option, so , I can stand that when I see the price. On the other hand, voices in Cambridge are less in the middle and then the "feeling " more open than Audiolab. It is a more bright and it sometimes bothered me. Well, according to HiFi Choice, they preferred Audiolabs sound to this MFns. Both were preferred to Cambridge cxa80 and some others amifiers. So his MF is at the level of Audiolab 6000a and a comparison would be welcome. Last thing, some reviews , test compared some Onkyo's hifi amplifiers ( 3010, 31xxxx for less than 400 dollars) and they say that for less than Cambridge cxa 81 you can have a Onkyo's amplifier as good as Cambridge cxa81 and buy an excellent external dac you can replace later. So Aufiolab 6000a Vs MFm2 vs Onkyo 3010, 31 will be interesting together.

I ve been on a amplifier hunt for the past two years since my Marantz 2245 stop working and can't find anyone that can fix it. ..... four repair shops and the last one has had it for about 6 months. And I can't find anything that I'd want to hook up to my Rega P3 and Warfedale Diamond 11.5's. Thought about the Leak 230 for awhile.... The Yamaha A-S1200 is out of my budget, the Outlaw receiver was on my mind for a long time, as well as the Marantz 40n, I so so wanted this amp till the moment you compared it to the Marantz PM8006, now just makes me want the 40n again. In the last two years I've added over 120 audiophile albums to my collection and they've never been opened. But I d rather stare at my album collection and remember how good it sounded than end up with something that is subpar from the experience of what my system used to sound like. .... the hunt continues

Beautiful sounding and looking amp, got in on the $599 Upscale Audio deal which makes it even sweeter. I have it paired with Monitor Audio RX6. Review is on point - very refined and detailed sound. I love the barebones features, all I need and nothing I don't eg. phono. It does have a pre out for sub. Very satisfied with sound and build quality and would prob only spend more for more power or features.

This is a great amp. I bought one about a year ago. I then passed it on to a friend to start his system. I am sorry that I did that. Sounds good with a set of KLIPSCH. It's better than you think.

You did several comparisons to other amps. I kinda wish you added some links to the other amps (maybe also reviews you did earlier) and maybe added some pictures into the video of those products. I had to pause the video many times and try to listen and google those products. It became a bit confusing. Other than that your explanation of the sound characteristics were perfect. It really gave me a picture in my head of what to expect from a product like this

Wait a minute, Sean. From my recent shopping research, the M3si differs quite a bit (not counting the DAC and phono preamp). M3si has 13 more watts on tap into 8ohms AND most intriugingly is a dual mono config. Maybe you meant sonically these differences don't amount to much of a sonic difference between the M2si?

I would like to have your opinion, if the m2si is able to drive well my Chario Delphinus loundspeakers (30-120 W in 4 Ω).
I want to change my existing amplifier Pioneer A A-9 MK II (55 W in 8 Ω and 73 W in 4 Ω) with something more powerful and more sofisticated one, with rounded trembles.

I would also have been interested in the musical Fidelity M2si. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to hear him. However, an Atoll IN100 won the comparison between a Rotel A11 Tribute and an audiolab 6000a. Although it is not a direct comparison, since the atoll with its 2x 100 watts is in a different league. But for my B&W 705 S2 it was the best alternative. But the Audiolab is also a sonic sensation with its very good internal DAC. The DAC can be retrofitted to the Atoll for a very fair price, the choice is yours. The double mono structure justifies the surcharge, as does the production in France and not in China. As far as my report. Hifi is a wonderful passion! Thanks

You're absolutely right, I tried pairing it with some B&W 606s & it was nail scrapingly bright. At least to somebody who loves the warm tannoy gold type sound
I got one when they were on sale. I think Musical Fidelity closed them out after they were sold to ProJect. I even went to the website and did not find one. Even at $799, they would be a steal.
Hi, first I love your reviews, they are just what I look for. I really need your quick comments as I am getting tired pairing my ZU DW6 speakers that I just bought a month back. Finally after watching your video please please suggest - as I have limited budget, here is my choice, 1. M5si with Cambridge CXN100 streamer or 2. M6si with cheaper streamer like Wiim Pro. Also can I add like equalizer like schitt lauki for tuning? Hope Music Fidelity is going to pair well with ZU DW6, please please help! Thanks

Excellent review.For 799$ i prefer Yamaha A-S 701 who has not boosted treble (vs M2si) and more muscular sound (2x100 8 ohm) excellent mids and very deep/strong bass responce.Also has tone controls,phono input,optical,coaxial.
Hey Sean, great job on that review as always. I think I speak for a lot of people here when I say that the value of the information when get from your videos is as good as it gets, speacially since it will be next to iposible to bring home the amount of gear you review without pissing poeple off (i.e. the wife) or just taking some losses from shipping charges that often. Anyway, being an owner of the S400's, SA LS3/5A (you can tell I take your recomendations very seriously, LOL) and tekton Lore; this line of amps from MF, IotaVX and Dayens Ampino & Menuetto has always intrigued me and they sit on a good budget level. What would be your personal choice bewtween them if you were mostly after great tonality, a wide soundstage, good with different genres but preferably acoustic/jazz and a more refined presentation?
And I mean your personal preference because I believe that after your videos for a while, I tend to prefer products that you categorize as "good to your personal liking".

Hey man, I think it just depends on the *exact* speakers that I'll be using. For example, with Buchardt, I'd take Musical Fidelity over Dayens or Iotavx. With Sound Artist, I prefer the Vista Audio Spark II. It just depends on what I feel best compliments a given speaker. The Iotavx remains my go-to recommendation just because its so well-rounded, and comes with some decent features to boot. But for really honing in a great system, that's when I take it on a case by case basis.

Hey Sean if you don't mind a follow up Q. I've thought about the vista spark ii for the ls3/5a the thing that has kept me from buying it is that it would be used in a small bedroom application (not desktop), and I'm worried that it will run out of juice pretty quick. What are your thoughts on that?
The room is probably 18x15 and I don't need it to go crazy loud... Just a little bit.

I am debating since weeks if getting the bigger brother (the M3si due to the extra watts and phono stage) or the Marantz 8006 but I would understand that your preference goes for the made in Japan piece, in terms of presentation/quality of sound? Both the MF and the Marantz in your opinion could drive well not very efficient speakers like Sonus Faber Venere 1.5 ? Ciao from Italy!
Hmmm. For Sonus Fabers, I'd actually lean slightly more towards the Musical Fidelity piece. They tend to like a bit of control and liveliness.

Bass and treble controls would let people adjust the sound if they find it a little bright, I think the whole “Tone controls are Evil” thing is a bit illogical, it’s good to be in control .. Overall this seems like a decent unit and 72 watts is relatively healthy. People could always play it safe and buy the Schiit Loki to fine tune things a little. BTW, The new format is cool - keep up the good work!
Tone controls add complexity to the circuit which at this price, is pretty audible and usually detrimental to sound quality. While attenuation to the treble could potential help the forward nature of this unit, there will still be prominence in that region all the same. Having said that, there are plenty of components at the same price and less that offer that additional flexibility should one want it. Cheers and thanks for the good vibes!
@@ZeroFidelity I suppose so, accuracy has its virtues. I would however point out that while many people enjoy non-fiction, others prefer a good story - look at all the love for tube Amps. I sometimes wonder if we should be chasing accurate sound or just enjoying the differences. Pardon my thinking out loud - I enjoy your reviews!

Fix your BAT because you're not getting anything for a thousand dollars that will compete with it.

I got 1 after I had been wanting one for a while. The review is accurate. I would call it analytical as well. With B&W CM4's, playing classic rock exposed all of the recording flaws. Do not pair with a bright speaker and all is good. Oh the looks....

An alternative in every aspect to the Musical Fidelity would be an Atoll amplifier (Atoll 50 or 80 Signature).
By myself I have got an Atoll IN 50 SE - amazing stuff for the price and a good start into the audiophile world.
Hey there, i happen to have the same amplifier which i bought brand new for 500 euro off a deal and partnered it with the Triangle bro3s which i got for 360 euro ( also on discount ) for my very first hi-fi system. I wanted to ask you based on your experience with it, how would you describe it's sound signature teble/mid/bass wise? I hadn't managed to find much info about it but i knew it was a good purist piece amp with probably a neutral to warm character i would say judging fron my experience with it and the few info that i had managed to gather although i am still not sure haha..... @@bloodbathory5624 Hello. What I know from Triangle is, that they are a bit on the bright and dynamic site. You can compare the sound of the Atoll with a tube amp. So in my opinion it should be the perfect combination.
@@dertechniker8867 Hey, thanks for the quick and detailed response !!! Do you think the bass region of the Atoll might be a bit weak? I am asking because i notice that the bass output of my amp/speakers combo is a bit weak when the BRO3s are known to have pretty strong bass, although i know there are many variables that come into play here like room acoustics, wall distance, speaker placement, dac or turntable gear/cables/speaker stands etc. I use the system on a desktop application with the speakers toed in forming an approximately 100cm equilateral triangle with my head while the ( front ported ) speaker's distance from the rear wall is around 60cm. The problem is i still don't have some proper speaker stands and use some books as a temporary solution and my dac is nothing to write home about either, it's a 2019 soundblaster 130 euro ESS sabre dac/amp PC soundcard so not a proper traditional hi-fi dac. As far as cables go i do use some decent thick 2m 25 euro each dynavox speaker cables but my RCA cables are mediocre. I would appreciate if you could give me your opinion on this and sorry for the long text. Thanks !!!
@@bloodbathory5624 bookshelf speaker need to be close to the wall if bass is a point that matters a lot. So 60cm are to far. Try a distance around 20cm. If you don't have to left hands you can build stands by yourself - it's not a big deal. Your cables and the dac are good enough - don't think about a change.

Hi Sean, just bought a pair of Harbeth P3ESR for my home office, so in desktop/very near-field listening. I was hesitating between Musical Fidelity M3SI and Roksan K3 (I want air between the musicians), but now there's maybe the M2SI. The P3ESRs are in your speakers list here, but not a word about that pairing in your review. Is it because it's bad?
My description was kept generic so my words would apply to as many people as possible. In the review I said that the M2si pairs up best (imho) to speakers that are known for having a warm and smooth sound. Your Harbeths def. fit the bill and would some pretty good with the m2si. Cant comment on the Roksan as I haven't heard it.
I have the Roksan k3 amp , here in the uk . Its a good all round amp. Compared to the Cambridge audio cxa61 that my friend has is the k3 is much smoother. I found the k3 to be more atmospheric and open and fluid while the cxa61 more etched and precise sounding .
How about the Outlaw RR2160 vs the M2si? Similar price, the Outlaw being integrated with phono stage...

I was very attention when you started to name the compatible speakers, and, unfortunately for me, didn't hear nothing about them, nor for being good pairing nor to be bad pairing.
Does the depth of this unit (400 mm including terminals) also include the depth of the volume knob or is that extra thing popping out and not included in the 400 mm size mentioned in the brochure?
If it just had VU meters, I'd buy ten of them. ;)
As an aside, I'd be grateful if you'd pick out a particularly hard to drive, nominal 4 ohm speaker pair to test amps for their real world music ability. Kinda keep that speaker set around as a reference and call out the listening results. Too many amps SAY they can drive low Z speakers (with typically a 1.0% THD), but get sent to the showers actually doing it.
P.S. I don't see that the newer format loses anything except stress.
P.P.S. No tone controls, deal is off. I've never used an amp where my long-term favorite setup was with the tone controls at top dead center. YMMV

This review describes the sound spot on. I have the m2si driving the Wharfedale Evo 4.3s and I find that combo sounding really nice. I tried it with my Klipsch rp600m’s and that indeed was a terrible match, way too bright.
Sounds like a seat matchup. Warfdale has that emit tweeter tamed quite well.
I'm really curious about the Evo's. I want to pull the trigger but I'm afraid that they might be too warm and I can't afford to get stuck with them if that's the case. Also my listening position puts me 7' from the speakers to my ears.
@@LeoRousseau Well, Cant help you with that. I like a neutral to warmer sound due to hearing damage. I think they fall between my Elac Debut 62 and Traianle Bro 3 speakers. The 20s have very good bass and are all around ell balanced speakers to my thinking. I am playing them with a Schiit Ragnok2 and a Schiit Gungnier DAC and Audiolab 6000CDT transport. Very pleasant as I hate treble harshness. You might be better off with EVOKE 10s and a couple REL 5Ti Subwoofers. I picked up an open box pair for $1750 helped the financial pain.
@@LeoRousseau In my opinion, the Evo’s are not too warm, especially when paired with the musical fidelity. There are some songs when they can even seem a bit bright, though not by much. They are also surprisingly dynamic. I notice I’m spending more time listening to music with the evos than with my previous klipsch’s.

Cant comment on the Rotel A12. As far as the Marantz goes, I'd take the Musical Fidelity m2si over any Marantz under the PM8006.

God, I love my IOTAVX stack. I was considering a higher end musical fidelity for an eventual upgrade but I don't think their products are for me. That Yamaha a-s1200 though..
Glad you're diggin' the stack. If you do jump from it to something in the Musical Fidelity line, the m6si is where you will likely want to be. Until the time comes to make the next move, enjoy the good sound!
Any plans on reviewing more subwoofers? Kef just released a super small sub (about the size of LS50) which goes down to 11 Hz according to Kef. I want some reviewers to debunk those bold claims when the sub is available xD
