Congrats on 10k! I love the idea of spellshaper tribal, those cards are all fun and interesting but they often end up a bit too niche for most decks I build.
2 of my favorite mtg RUclipsrs crossover
I've been toying with Grolnok, the Omnivore as a shapeshifter tribal deck. Mostly because frogs are just not good really
they did one before @@OTKok
THE SNAIL HAS ARRIVETH
I had a spellshaper madness deck a few years ago. Thinking of making a similar deck, since i took the deck apart
Man this guys the best, thank you for your content!
Thank you for your support!
Congrats! The brewing process would be great, I love building decks but I'm horrible and non-imaginative. I want to get better at it and your videos help a ton!
I have tried bulding averna 3 times, but it was always to inconsistant. Kellen the kid is exactly the idea I had in mind. Ive already built a regular version and am currently building a cedh build.
CEDH Kellen? Interesting what makes it good in cEDH?
A live deck building stream would be cool, but if you do please upload it here too :)
Agreed. I’d love to see the thought process building from scratch
This is what i need as a new breewer. Built my very first deck and would also love to see how to find faults/weaknesses and fix them
Removing supplemental sets and "outside the game" mechanics such as the initiative is so based
I agree. I do really like the monarch though. I feel like it’s not as confusing and leads to encouraging more fun game actions.
I have a Niv Supreme deck, and it's fun and pretty strong. I play it more like a control deck. Keep people off your butt until you can get Niv out, and then all of the removal and card draw in your bin that has essentially a free extra cast. The cards that help a lot are the Eidolon cycle from Dissension; they return to your hand when you cast a multicolour spell. So as long as you have one in your hand, you basically just have flashback.
Stormkiln artist and Widespread Thieving also help, as they essentially reduce all your spells mana by 1. Then my win cons are General Ferrous, 4C Aragorn, Young Peezy/Hero of Precinct One, or Mana Cannons.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't bring it to a cEDH table, but it's one of my favourite commanders and I wanted to share lol.
Yeah, really cool niv (my favorite is the guildpact one though), and there are a bunch of card shenanigans that makes discarding a card way less of a cost, such as squee, goblin nabob, master of death and rielle, the everwise are the ways that I do use to turn it into card economy.
Would you be open to sharing the deck list?
@@elijahcastillo7679 I could yeah, I don’t have anything prepped for it though so I’d have to make it
Would Aetherflux work with your deck? What about Birgi and Urabrask, or would they not work because they only make red mana? Vadrik could be good too, but only if your deck has a lot of generic mana costs, which is probably not very common with multicolour spells
Congrats on the 10k!
I have a Niv Supreme deck that I absolutely love to play, and a thing that made the jumpstart pretty good is the eidolon cycle that comes back to your hand when you cast a multicolor spell, so you can discard them for the cost and get em back with the same spell. Some things like jeskai ascendancy + dorks that care about color, the 4c Aragorn and the new Lilah also work wonders.
Erin's, gloom stalker and Street urchin is a rg draw go control deck which uses backgrounds and can be built at varying power levels
and! Saloubrius Snail made a video on it!
This was a really cool video. The only reason i dislike dungeons is because it's a token your using a token to keep track of where you are in the token. And when your deck is built around moving that token as fast as possible and there's multiple different dungeons you can pick from but you can only do one it's hard to keep track of where the token was and play around it. The initiative, while attempting to fix the mechanic failed to do so.
Other than that, it would be nice if WotC leaned on Experience Counters and/or Energy type mechanics.
When WotC did Brothers War, i though the "Powerstone Token" was going to continue being a "mainstay" as it allowed players to better compete. i was sad it was just another "set gimmick."
Again, really cool video, really nice to get other perspectives. And thank you for your time reading this.
Honestly decks can always run a few stax cards or stax like cards and it be fine
My background deck is ellyn harbreeze, busbody and master chef. Deck is super flavorful (heh) and you can shove a ton of lord of the rings cards in there because almost every hobbit makes food or wants food. I also have it built around folk hero and descendant's path, which is pretty easy when over half my creatures are hobbits which are usually halflings/peasants. Also, academy manufactor is an insane card.
If you're looking for some Background Commanders, I have a couple I've been thinking about.
Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward (White) with Master Chef (Green) or Far Traveler (White). I like Master Chef Abdel for the capacity to be this pseudo flicker system and wide token boards. Having Green with Chef gives a lot of ramp and doubling of both tokens and counters.
Imoen, Mystic Trickster (Blue) and Agent of the Shadow Thieves (Black) is something I want to try to do as this rogue focused deck with dungeons as a subset to generate value. Rogues are pretty decent at picking up initiative and Imoen's draw value is alluring to me. I've brought this idea to my friends and their perspective was that there are better colors for dungeons and that the value generated from Imoen is too slow.
One Background Commander I've heard about and I'd like to build is Erinis, Gloom Stalker (Green) with Street Urchin (Red), Erinis's deathtouch blends perfectly with Street Urchin to be cheap creature removal to be a Gruul control deck. Erinis can fetch back artifact lands which you can use as reusable ammo.
And one Background Commander I've seen used brilliantly was Burakos, Party Leader (Black) with Guild Artisan (Red) as this Treasure Party aggro deck. It was pretty neat, swinging to gain anywhere from one to six Treasures, Cranial Plating was devastating in the early stages. Though the deck kind of petered out once the table picked away at his cards and recasting the commander became steep.
Bro, are you me? My first deck was rakdos Vampires during Avacyn Returns, and one of the first cards I bought from a LGS was the same Sorin Markov along with a blade of the blood chief
Ahh finally another correct-opinion-having modern boomer like myself. (Unchain my Pod you cowards!)
background commander due i've been slowly building is Erenis, Gloomstalker & Street Urchin. She's a deathtouching Green elf, and street urchin says "commanders you own have {1}, sacrifice a creature or artifact, this creature does 1 damage to any target." It's shapinng up to be Gruul Artifact Control.. Really fun.
A lot of people have suggested this pair and it seems right up my alley!
@@thetrinketmage It is a LOT of fun to ping down combo creatures your opponents control. I suggest an Eel Umbra and similar effects so Erenis can also draw you cards if you run out of gas
Big congrats on 10k!
im not an angry dude, im a man guy dude 😎
thanks dunkey
I'm a Yugioh player first and a magic player second, so I'm always curious about where the lines blur for other people who have properly played both. What solidified the switch to focus on MTG or do you still enjoy some yugioh in some way? (Current format, Edison, Goat, Tengu, etc.)
I didn’t like the endless power creep of yugioh… though mtg is not starting to have more of those issues! I quit when burning abyss speedroids was a deck and the game just got too fast imo
I feel called out with a phrase “its not just lords and attacking”. Since three humans decks I own, do have those properties. But they also dont shy away completly from interaction packages, as well as staxy creatures. Main purpose of those decks is to give an ass kick to “Im just playing for fun” battlecruiser players, rather than being complex. Faster decks usually reveal glaring problems in people’s decks, that otherwise would be overlooked.
I just don’t like playing tribal decks, no hate towards anyone who does though!
Hey, Trinket Mage. First, congrats on the 10k! Do you think you could share your heliod mono white draw go deck? I just loved the concept and wanted some inspiration on how to build one.
www.moxfield.com/decks/FWNRiW_J00uNBmtiyZZVSA
Here you go!
A live deck sounds awesome, keep up the good work btw!
I have a weird obsession with making good commanders in ways that are almost never seen, like my Obosh the preypiercer voltron deck that builds off of Obosh also dealing double damage. Are their any commanders that you like or want to build in a way that isnt normal?
I think any of the commanders I used as a bauble tribal salvaging station deck were probably like that!
I absolutely love background commanders, if you havent brewed with them you really should. I play gut, true soul zealot and its a load of fun but almost all of the background commanders are really strong
Gut is a card I’ve used in the 99 of some decks and it’s very strong!
I somehow missed the community post 😭 but do you have any advice for choosing what decks to dismantle? I have way too many but I’m too attached
For me if I have lived the dream and the deck did its thing so perfectly I’ll never replicate it I just scrap the deck
Do you have a list of secret op legends for jodah, the unifier? Also do you have a community discord server?
Secret OP legends… honestly check out my RUclips shorts I’m sure you can find some cool legends there!
As for discord I do have one but it’s for patrons only. Link is in the description if you want to check it out!
Not liking Universes Beyond. 😔✊🏽
Same, man. The push for monetization of people who are not already playing the game/have no interest in the game is diluting the game. Same with something I know you mention in another video later too - pushing "designed for commander" cards in non-commander-exclusive sets/products (i.e. TOR and Nadu). Designing everything with commander as one of the primary foci is hurting the game, and it needs to change.
Gotta disagree on the Horizons sets though - not *all* of those cards are a problem... just several of them. 😂 😭
U play 40k, magic, work and have a life? Wow teach us 😮
I get up for work at 8:30 am and don’t finish working on vids till 3 am. I haven’t played 40K in a while :(
Thank you for answering my question :) through hard experience I did find decks that fall over at the slightest push boring. (One example that I built was P Bridge flip into Ink Treader) and one positive way to fix that was to add interaction that can be disruptive for your opponents but also flexible to protect your fragile strategy. I added more artifact and enchantment removal in a graveyard, since most graveyard hate tends to show up there ( example: caustic caterpillar in a Meren deck) but that still leaves me removal for artifact decks
Oh yeah, there were a lot of commanders that I built but then I noticed that they were mostly "if they remove my commander I lose, if they don't, I win" which just sounded boring because it was pretty much "Oh well, I hope they don't remove my commander" and I also disliked it a lot
@xaropevic7918 yesss exactly which is why I'm trying to follow into Snails and Trinkets mages shoes in having decks where the commander is a tool, not the focus of a deck. My favorite control example of this is Ertai Resurrected, can counter any spell or ability or destroy a creature at instant speed
Abaddon from WH40000 release can be both “folds to removal” or “solid midrange with chaos blessings involved” - its just a matter, of how much do you focus on your CMD. But some commanders “VOLTRON” are to focused on their commander. Nice to play with it from time to time, but not on a regular basis.
@IvanKolyada yeah I completely agree, voltron is definitely commander reliant, but they also usually pack alot of protection. One of my favorites was group hug voltron with Xyris. I think a cool way to make it more interesting tho is have the majority of the deck be equipment and occasionally switch out commanders whenever you feel bored. For example you could just run Ardenn and flip through so many different partners. Go from Akiri to Anara, to Armix to whomever
Ideas for Background commanders... One I've built is Karlach/Veteran Soldier. When getting those 1/1 soldiers from Veteran Soldier, they come tapped, but the extra combat ability of Karlach makes them untap. While they don't have inherent haste, they certainly can put out a good job as chumpblockers. Another one I considered building for PDH was Halsin/Inspiring Leader. There are plenty of ways to get tokens in Selesnya, and the sheer absurdity of having a food token suddenly becoming a 6/6 bear on block is funny on its own.
One last recommendation is Alora/Hardy Outlander. When attacking with Alora in play, you can make one creature unblockable at the cost of returning it back to your hand at the beginning of the next end step. Hardy Outlander makes it so while attacking with Alora, another creature has double power. Then I remember a card from Commander 2018 called "Hydra Omnivore", which would reaaaally benefit from such combination. And there are many ways to buff creatures in Simic, too !
2:17 (Oogway voice.) "My time has come."
Lately, my favorite deck has been Ganax, Astral Hunter // Feywild Visitor.
It's Izzet dragon-spam. It's my favorite tribe/archetype in my favorite colors. And is by far my most consistent deck, both for "doing the thing" and winning. (Maybe tied with the few Voltron decks I've tried for "doing the thing," but only Light-Paws comes close for winrate.)
For backgrounds, I've been trying to make Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher work, and it would be cool to see what you do with it.
Hey, Trinket Mage. How do you feel about token decks. I have a green/black elf token deck in commander.
Token decks can cover a wide range of decks! They can be fun I think! My Tormod list is a token deck! Elfball is a classic theme I used to play a few years ago
That’s cool. Any advice to improve token decks. I feel like I lack some spells to defend myself with my deck.
ohh i have allready build a ton of backgroung commanders.
like:
Shameless Charlatan + Livaan, Cultist of Tiamat (to ge fair any red one does the job) = everything copies deck.
Noble Heritage + Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer = a "give your opponents creatures to punch themselfs".
Agent of the Shadow Thieves + Wilson, Refined Grizzly = aggro deck, but i gues you can also play infect
Scion of Halaster + Zellix, Sanity Flayer = a mill deck
Halsin, Emerald Archdruid + Guild Artisan = tokens are bears.
and some things that didnt work out for me but i still like the idea:
Wilson, Refined Grizzly + Flaming Fist = aggro and with alot of things that give lifelink.
Popular Entertainer + Rasaad yn Bashir = big buts dont lie
Agent of the Shadow Thieves + Wyll, Blade of Frontiers = rolling dices
Sword Coast Sailor + Karlach, Fury of Avernus = a fair extra turn/combat deck (so only the background is ok).
Cloakwood Hermit + Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar = anthems/make them big.
Tavern Brawler + Sarevok, Deathbringer = as a burn deck (i allready have more then enough decks like that^^)
Haunted One + Skanos Dragonheart/Burakos, Party Leader/Zellix, Sanity Flayer = a tipal deck, depending on your creature commander.
As an avid DND player, I really liked the idea of the backgrounds so I've built several different commander/bg combos. My favorite by far though is my Wilson deck. It's a core of 60 green/colorless cards that can be shuffled into 1 of 4 different colored backgrounds. Each color BG plays different (Blue: Blink, White: +1/+1 counters, Black: Reanimator, Red:Burn) so it's like having 4 unique decks in one. I highly recommend trying something like this because it was a really satisfying deck building challenge. Just be sure to roll a d4 to decide which background you'll choose each game for maximum flavor.
So what do you think is the right amount of commander decks someone should have, so that every deck gets its playtime but also you got a good amount of variety in terms of powerlevel/archtypes?
And what is your opinion on using proxies overall? I get both sides because playing the game you love should be the focus and if money ist what is stoping you from enjoying it why not? Otherwise i also can understand, that this may lead to people just putting in every good card they can find. But for me i like the idea to "get" more Decks without spending thounsands of euros but still contain my powerlevel i built my decks.
Two things:
+1,00,000 for Snail. The two of you are remaking M:tG content for the far better. I'd love to see more colabs.
I'm sorry I missed your Q&A requests but, if you've time for one more: among all of the pieces of so-called sage advice and wise adages about Commander that get bandied about, which do you think is/are the most harmful/shortsighted/straight-up wrong?
Props on your milestone!
I definitely agree with not loving the horizons sets. I used to play modern all the time and the horizons one came out and I literally haven’t played since. It’s actually really sad since it was my favourite format. Now I mostly just play commander.
On the topic of backgrounds, they are cool but the enchantments literally do nothing when your commander isn’t in play (by design) so they feel way worse than partners.
Congratz on the 10k subs TM. Nice!
I paired Erinis with Veteran Soldier to build Flagstones_Of_Trokair.deck. Not as controlly as the Gruul version, it’s more of a land recursion/combat/tokens list, but you do get to play with weird cards like Aura Fracture, Abolish and Indrik Umbra and triple your fetches with Cosmic Intervention. Partner decks are also probably the best place to run those lieutenant-type cards, so that could be another cool reason to build a background deck.
Hi Mage! Another Salvaging Station enjoyer here 👋
Which color combinations would you say are the most fun for Salvaging Station deck?
Im currently playing jeskai with Akiri/Glacian, its pretty ok but needs tuning, and some insight from expert would do.
Hope your Day goes well!
i really wanted to play silumgar's command but I'm already playing counterpoint, desertion, and spell swindle lol
Also I agree blue is the best but all colors are fun
Desertion is such a fun card to play
You almost need to build the Jump Start Niv with lots of madness or creatures to reanimate or both. Even pitching flashback cards. I honestly think he could work, if the whole plan was to get your graveyard filled for casting Mizzix's Mastery... Of course, maybe this is exactly what you did and it just wasn't enough
If I could make any mtg format I would make something like modern/pioneer but rarity of cards decides how many you can run in your deck. 1 mythic rare max, 2 rare, 3 uncommon, 4 common instead of just 4 of any one card
Picked up a Debt of Loyalty... It being more than $5 and quite specific makes sense as to why it's not played as much, but it's such a cool card and as far as I can tell hasn't been reprinted. So... You convinced me. I've already been playing Shadowgrange and Shugeki. The blue one might be next, because split second really gives it the edge, but as for Bedlam... Not sure I'm up to that. You gotta be hyperaggro and hope you're not up against pillow fort and goad. Because then you're in a lot of trouble. I like Heat Stroke, because it works in an aggro deck and punishes opponents from blocking or even attacking if you've gone wide enough.
You mentioned you haven’t touched any of the background commanders, I’d love to see your take on Abdel Adrian, I feel there are so many different ways to take him. (High power and expensive with Infinite combos, or low power and cheap with just good value but no infinites)
I’m also curious how you feel about infinites in casual low power magic. Might be in one of your videos but I’m new here and still going through them all. Love the content so far though and already subscribed!
Wilson, refined grizzly and Shameless Charlatan. It may not be the best background pair, but it is the most fun. And there’s nothing like an opponent playing an OP creature and you being like “me too!” But yours can swing immediately when they have to wait a turn.
Question: For Niv-Mizzy, I assume to tried weaving in a Madness theme? Since most Madness cards - as far as I am aware - are permanents, it would probably be the best way of cheating them out while playing semi-control.
Built my 2nd ever commander deck as Jahiera + Guild Artisan. Only got one chance to play it yet though.
I have a Background Commander! Renari, Merchant of Marvels + Acolyte of Bahamut is a really fun way to do dragon tribal in my opinion, it also aligns pretty well with the "draw, go" style of gameplay that you said you're a fan of.
I’ve LOVED playing with backgrounds and I highly recommend you try it sooner rather than later. My skanos + cultist of the absolute deck is a blast to play.
A mechanic I would add given the chance is this:
Rabid (This creature attacks each combat if able. Whenever it deals damage to another creature without rabid, put a rabid counter on that creature.)
So, essentially reshaped goad? Sounds cool! You either let the damage through, or might end up adding to the mayhem.
@@IvanKolyada actually, my rabid mechanic predates goad. I came up with it in highschool. I think the mechanic back then was like: (This creature attacks each combat if able. When it deals damage to another creature, that creature becomes rabid.)
Honestly I would love to see a video of ground up EDH Deck building; being able to see the thought process of another person from start to finish would make for a nice marathon binge watch, and would be really insightful to where my own thinking lands in comparison to others. Especially if the video/stream was rather raw and was without the prettying up of quick edits and cuts in the decision making process.
Livaan Cultist of Timat with Dragon Cultist background is my favorite mono red deck I've ever made! Instead of doing low cost burn spells I went high and kept all instance and sorcery 5 or above mana wise while using burn spells that can have any target and avoiding ones that do damage to everything.
What tribe do you feel deaerves more support and what would you have their niech and style be? I imagine since you're rating every Legendary creature ever that you'll have a long list. Also, how do you feel about tribes in general. I just recently learned that not everybody likes them and i was shocked since theyre my favorite type of deck.
For me probably Spiders. Its an easy archetype yet they're way too mana demanding and just dont usually have much going for them. Id really like to see them become a powerhouse of their own sort.
I recently tried to make a control deck out of niv supreme but I also couldn’t really make it work. I thought the card selection with a bit of mill and the modal charms would make it work but it was super trash xD
I really wanna make a control deck but I just can’t seem to make one that I actually like and works. Atm I’m thinking about hidetsugu devouring chaos, but I’m not sure the deck functions well enough
I'm not sure how effective the combo would be, I've always wanted to see a Karlach+Haunted one deck brew, black red extra combats with a typal sub-theme.
Current favorite deck is my background commander pair of erinis, gloom stalker and candlekeep sage. Its a simic self mill list, and it uses keruga as the companion to churn out a ton of card draw when needed. Honestly i cant get enough of this deck, as its so insanely strong and i love my hippo overlord. Erinis flys under the radar so easily, and its by turn 7 you tend to run out of targets in deck for your fetch lands (i run 19 basics btw) 2:09
I have a "contorl" type deck that runs salvaging station and baubles and its sans blue its glissa seems like a deck your looking for
which Glissa
@@thetrinketmage glissa the traitor I just remove everyone's cretures pretty much constantly and loop baubles either through glissa the traitor or salvaging station and play into an end game where I play big beaters cause glissa keeps me alive cause nobody wants too attack into a first strike death toucher
I can loop removal spells take opponets turns over and over aswell as remove every token from the field every single turn with cards like filgree stylex and ratchet bomb mines a 50$ budget deck and can put in some absloutle work
6:35 this question is interesting. I agree with you. You need to put the pros/cons on the table, especially when a card does nothing by itself.
Congrats on 10K! 💜
congrats on 10K!! ahhh I knew there was some Warhammer thing going on with your profile picture 😆I knew there was something going on
We all know that the only color that shouldn't be played is green.
I play an (Upsetting to my friends) amount of black and blue
10:38 THANK YOU i keep telling people this is the biggest recent problem other than the release schedule, and people keep writing me off as a ccg boomer
I enjoy the feeling of control decks but can’t help but want to attack with big creatures. Any advice on a strategy or commander to bridge the gap between Gruul Stompy and Esper Control?
Theft decks! You play esper control but just let big creatures resolve so you can yoink them! Play bribery to grab a huge Gruul stompy card and use it in your esper deck
Chromium the mutable is a stompy wincon for esper control, look at the UG+x color big creatures, they will probably be quite able to support both archetypes at the same time...also try Uro, cheat it into play and either ramp to big spells while countering stuff or use fight spells with that big boi to remove a creature
@@thetrinketmage That sounds like a great way to play the best of both deck types. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@xaropevic7918 These are some great suggestions. Thanks for your thoughts and time!
I have an Amber Gristle O' Maul + Guild Artisan Deck
"Red Tymna" is the name
No questions here, just wanted to say how much I appreciate your content and that it has made me a better brewer. Thanks man and keep doing you!
A background commander I’d like to suggest is Volo, itinerant Scholar. He’s literally just The One Ring in the command zone. I have him paired with Master Chef as the second commander and the amount of cards Volo can draw makes the deck super consistent
Volo plus haunted one can be real fun thing to build around. The party commander is also fun with that and can be good with at least one background from all the colors
Background deck is fun: I have a Zellix Haunted One Horror Mill deck
Congrats
Did you really go from 10K to 15.7K in three weeks??
Hey Brownie from patreon here, just wanted to say your content is great and can’t wait too see what ya got cooking for in the future for the channel
vhal candlekeep researcher / haunted one is a fun commander pair. very versatile and fun
I made a karlach deck with acolyte of Bahamut for a fun and different dragon deck and I love it
Onwards! 100k before Christmas!😉
I'D LOVE TO SEE A DECK BUILDING LIVE STREAM OMG PLEASE
I think a fun background deck idea would be Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer with Noble Heritage. It should mostly focus on making Baeloth big to keep everyone's stuff goaded, and then swinging in with Baeloth when he gets big enough. It's a deck I've been wanted to make for a bit (especially because I have no Group Hug decks and rlly want to try it) but I've just been too focused on my Anzrag aggro deck.
Also, congrats on 10k
Baeloth is cool! I played him in the 99 of some decks!
Suggestions for Background Commanders:
Erinis Gloom Stalker - Street Urchin. AKA Halfling with a gun: A Gruul Control deck keeping your opponents creatures in check by shooting them Erinis and also Land Recursion shenanigans.
Vhal Candelkeep Mystic - Tavern Brawler, set up as a Morph/Foretell deck. You can use Vhal Mana to Foretell and help flip Morphs as well as play Cards exiled with Tavern Brawler. There are better ways to build Vhal (usually very infinite Mana combo stuff), but Morph/Foretell is quite fun.
Both sound interesting. Vhal has been suggested here a few times and I’m kinda sold
An idea I can give you for a Background Commander deck is Baeloth Baarityl, Entertainer + Raised By Giants. Can't guarantee you won't be hated out, but the two work extremely well together.
Seems like a pretty fun combination!
As a possible suggestion for a background commander pairing, I’d strongly suggest looking at pairing Haunted One with something! Tribal decks can be a little stale and samey, but having haunted one in the command zone can really turn it on its head and give smaller tribes some more staying power.
I brewed Vhal / Haunted One, and the brainstorming process went waaaay deeper than I expected it to. It adds a surprising amount of nuance to kindred stuff.
Vhal is a really interesting card
Yes I would like to see the brew process and then the sleeving process.
hearing your age just aged me to dust lol
