  • Waiting for my train at Plymouth I realised that there was a main line steam special waiting in platform 8 and I was able to film it on my phone. I had no idea it would be there, it was a complete surprise.
The video runs just over a minute because I wanted to keep some of the sound at the end - the phone couldn't catch all of it echoing across the roofs of Plymouth as the train headed for Cornwall. Wonderful!
The locomotive is London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) No. 5699 Galatea built at Crewe Works in 1936, running as British Railways No. 45627 Sierra Leone. It was based at Bristol from 1948 to 1961 - did it ever run to Plymouth?
Remember the late Brian Oliver who rescued the locmotive from Barry and appreciation to all those who have worked so hard to rebuild and maintain it over the years. It was on the books for the LMS and British Railways for 28 years, then derelict or under restoration for 49 years, and has run again for the last 10 years.
