I live in Houston and love going there for the dulce de calabasa! I recently went to visit my daughter in Austin and I wanted to go to Mi Tierra. My daughter complained the entire time till she had some and said now I understand .
This brought back sweet ♥️ memories. Back in the days, my family would cross the border into Mexico and we would go to the "mercado". What a treat it was for us kids especially when mom would buy us all kinds of Mexican "goodies" 😋 there at the candy stands. We could not decide what to buy because there was a mountain of candy to choose from. One of those candies was the candied pumpkin shown in the video. I personally loved the milk fudge with pecans. There was also a coconut candy that had the colors of the Mexican flag. Those were just a few examples. For a kid, the variety of the Mexican candies available at the "mercado" was awsome. Indeed, some memories stay with you forever. ♥️
Loved this candy as a kid hunted for literally years a recipe the ones I found were never the way I remembered it being made. FINALLY got it! Thank You! 🙏❤️🙏
Never realized how much time/effort went into creating this deliciousness. Haven’t had this in years as it’s not easy to find in my area. I’m going to attempt it. May be a new fall tradition for my fam. Thank you.
Oh ny gosh! I can't believe you just came in 2 min ago and I am number 21 ! Aiming for number 1 viewer. I am so excited! My favorite thing is pumpkin candy!!!! Never knew how. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I used a regular pumpkin and the pieces were thicker. But it turned out beautifully! And there was ALOT. Not much syrup left over. And I used piloncillo and 3 cups of pure cane sugar because it's all I had. It's drying right now but snuck a bite or two... the texture is wonderful! Slight spice... just wonderful! Thanks Mamá! Will give out to family! 💗👍Will try this with a different winter squash next time.
Finally a recipe that is the same as the candy companies here in San Antonio. Great with pumpkins, half oranges, and even cactus. Thank you so much for posting!
There was one shop - only one - that sold candied pumpkin, yam, cactus. It closed. Now I'm SO excited because I can make it at home. Honestly, this is the only way you can get me to eat pumpkin. It's so so good!
I just stumbled upon your channel & I want to say that you have the most beautiful, calm voice of any chef I've watched. Thank you so much for this recipe!
My pumpkin is soaking in the cal right now. Can't wait to cook it up tomorrow! I can't believe how excited I am about making this for the first time. Thank you so much for your guidance!
This may sound crazy but I never had them. 🤔Then I asked my mom if she ever ate them and she said yessss that they are so good. Hmmmm. I must try these. Hope you have been great my friend. They look delicious as usual ❤️

Thank you! They are so good and also works with butternut squash. 😁
I can't wait to try making it as we have been looking for a recipe for years . We all love this candy but it is hard to find , thanks so much for posting the recipe.
I live in Toronto, Canada and it's so hard to get. Some Latino stores sometimes have it but not always and before I moved to this country, I used to enjoy it all the time. I really love it and for sure I will make it. Thanks for this video.
Thank you!! I have been trying to remember exactly how my grandmother ( who was a full blooded Apache Indian) use to make homemade pumpkin candy. I was 4 years old when I remember seeing her soak the pumpkin overnight. I never knew in what it was soaking in or the steps after. Thank you this recipe feels like an early Christmas gift😀🙏🏼❤️
Hello- you mentioned that this process will result in a semi crystallized candy. Is there anything to adjust to ensure it crystallizes completely? Thanks for sharing!
Just wanted you to know I made the chic fila nuggets ( I did strips ) put them on salads and baby when I tell you my family ate them UP ! Thanks for the brining tip ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for trying the recipe. I am so glad it worked for you. 🙌😊🙏🏼
Oh sweet baby Jesus ! Look at this dulce I just have to have some. I have a pre-existing condition that doesn't allow me to have pumpkin but shoot I'm going to have a small piece. Gracias Mamasita
OMg you live in Houston!! I figured out when I saw the video of you driving to your grandparents house! Since you’re a awesome cook, do you mind me asking what’s your favorite panadería here in Houston?
Thank you so much for all your instructions. I wanted to mention that I went to check your book at Amazon, and I noticed that in the "Look Inside", you don't include the index which I think would be an important marketing strategy. As is, I don't know all that's in the book. Thank you again. - Jose Nieto
You just got a shout out from emmymade! She's making birria tacos and said she got the idea from you and another RUclipsr. She has over a million followers. Get ready... 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊
Thank you for this video. My sweet mom has been craving it and they didn't have it at Mi Tierra, sounds like they stop carrying it there. So this recipe worked out perfectly. One question, how do you store it? Does it take a few days to dry out? Mine is taking a while.
I do this on my crock pot. I dont do all the cal stuff. Just throw the pumpkin and the piloncillos with a little water and set it the night before on low!
I made these yesterday.Didn't crystallize very much.Still soft in the middle.I wish the outside got a little harder.Which I could send you the picture.
Is the CAL Mexicana the same as pickling lime?? I have the hardest time finding Mexican ingredients where I live! I grew up eating this in California and I miss it!
Can this be done with a regular pumpkin?? I used my pie pumpkins for purée and I’m trying to do something with my big pumpkin my husband asked for pumpkin candy which brought me here.
I made this but the pumpkin went to mush after the first boil. I did use baking soda instead of lime to create the alkaline water but read this was ok. I would like to try again but not sure where I went wrong? I used a butternut pumpkin which is quite firm to begin with.
Can you add cream to this and leave the skin on? I remember my mom making something very very close to this but I remember us eating the pumpkin and chewing the skin off and eating it with cream.
Finally someone has posted how to make! THANK YOU Sometimes driving to Mi Tierra is a pain.
I sure miss going to Mi Tierra though. 😬😁
@ I went to Mi Tierra on Tuesday and they were out of Calabaza candy.😭
I live in Houston and love going there for the dulce de calabasa! I recently went to visit my daughter in Austin and I wanted to go to Mi Tierra. My daughter complained the entire time till she had some and said now I understand .

Wow 😯 my late grandpa made this every year this was a great treat!
Thank you so very much for posting this video. Does this method also apply to sweet potato?
What a good idea!
I think it might bcs I've had candied sweet potato just like this but I'm not sure if you have to use the cal/slaked lime for sweet potatoes.
Yummy! I love them! 😋😍 Thanks for sharing 🧡

When you soak it for 12 hours does it have to be in the refrigerator or left out on the counter.
TFS i for sure am going to make this yummmm 😁👍
I’m making the candy today, I added star anise and the whole house smells like empanadas 😊

Wow thats incredible. Looks complicated
Looks good! Your maiden is the same as mine!
Would this work for sweet potatoes? We gave such a great harvest if white sweet potatoes. Blessings
Another reason to grow pumpkins next year.

Is it necessary to use the lime?
This looks so yummy..
Yes it helps the pumpking not fall apart and become mush through all the boiling.

Thanks!
I think this would be good with butternut squash too.
New to your channel 🙋♀️
I bought a pumpkin to make this candy but I have a question before I make it is the cal nessasary?n if so where do I bought it?
So then if I want to make some from yams or sweet potato I use the same steps?
You know I said I would cut down my sugar intake but this looks so good I gotta make it. Lol! What I will do is just eat some but take the rest work.
Can you do a day of the dead series this year? I really want to celebrate it!
Do I need to keep stirring so it won't stick on the bottom of the pot
What is the best way to store the candy? Refrigerator? In a jar on the counter? Thanks!
I do this on my crock pot. I dont do all the cal stuff. Just throw the pumpkin and the piloncillos with a little water and set it the night before on low!
❤️🙏🌸
What's the best way to store this deliciousness when the full process is complete?
I made these yesterday.Didn't crystallize very much.Still soft in the middle.I wish the outside got a little harder.Which I could send you the picture.
Is this a similar process to what the Koreans do with sweet potato? Looks yummy!
Is the CAL Mexicana the same as pickling lime?? I have the hardest time finding Mexican ingredients where I live! I grew up eating this in California and I miss it!
May I ask what the cal is used for in the pumpkin?
Nice Egyptian food that you will like it on the channel⚘⚘🍟🌮⚘🌮🍟
I wonder can you do the same recipe with camote crystalized candy?
Can this be done with a regular pumpkin?? I used my pie pumpkins for purée and I’m trying to do something with my big pumpkin my husband asked for pumpkin candy which brought me here.
I made this but the pumpkin went to mush after the first boil. I did use baking soda instead of lime to create the alkaline water but read this was ok. I would like to try again but not sure where I went wrong? I used a butternut pumpkin which is quite firm to begin with.
Puedes sacar la cáscara o corteza, colocando la calabaza en el horno algunos minutos para que se hablande
Can I make without the cal?
Hello JoAnn, I was wondering can you make this recipe using sweet potatoes instead of pumpkin??
Hey hey
Hi I have a question for you. I live in Canada and don’t know where to by cal. Do you know if I could buy on Amazon Canada. Thanks for your help
Ill be making your tortilla recipe I’ll be making this soon thank you! Do you have a recipe for cow Tongue to share?
What kind of pumpkin did you use?
Can you add cream to this and leave the skin on? I remember my mom making something very very close to this but I remember us eating the pumpkin and chewing the skin off and eating it with cream.
